    Lightweight Federation of Non-Cooperating Digital Libraries

    This dissertation studies the challenges and issues faced in federating heterogeneous digital libraries (DLs). The objective of this research is to demonstrate the feasibility of interoperability among non-cooperating DLs by presenting a lightweight, data driven approach, or Data Centered Interoperability (DCI). We build a Lightweight Federated Digital Library (LFDL) system to provide federated search service for existing digital libraries with no prior coordination. We describe the motivation, architecture, design and implementation of the LFDL. We develop, deploy, and evaluate key services of the federation. The major difference to existing DL interoperability approaches is one where we do not insist on cooperation among DLs, that is, they do not have to change anything in their system or processes. The underlying approach is to have a dynamic federation where digital libraries can be added (removed) to the federation in real-time. This is made possible by describing the behavior of participating DLs in an XML-based language that the federation engine understands. The major contributions of this work are: (1) This dissertation addresses the interoperability issues among non-cooperating DLs and presents a practical and efficient approach toward providing federated search service for those DLs. The DL itself remains autonomous and does not need to change its structure, data format, protocol and other internal features when it is added to the federation. (2) The implementation of the LFDL is based on a lightweight, dynamic, data-centered and rule-driven architecture. To add a DL to the federation, all that is needed is observing a DL\u27s interaction with the user and storing the interaction specification in a human-readable and highly maintainable format. The federation engine provides the federated service based on the specification of a DL. A registration service allows dynamic DL registration, removal, or modification. No code needs to be rewritten or recompiled to add or change a DL. These notions are achieved by designing a new specification language in XML format and a powerful processing engine that enforces and implements the rules specified using the language. (3) In this thesis we explore an alternate approach where searches are distributed to participating DLs in real time. We have addressed the performance and reliability problems associated with other distributed search approaches. This is achieved by a locally maintained metadata repository extracted from DLs, as well as an efficient caching system based on the repository

    Collaborative annotation and semantic enrichment of 3D media

    A new FOSS (free and open source software) toolchain and associated workflow is being developed in the context of NFDI4Culture, a German consortium of research- and cultural heritage institutions working towards a shared infrastructure for research data that meets the needs of 21st century data creators, maintainers and end users across the broad spectrum of the digital libraries and archives field, and the digital humanities. This short paper and demo present how the integrated toolchain connects: 1) OpenRefine - for data reconciliation and batch upload; 2) Wikibase - for linked open data (LOD) storage; and 3) Kompakkt - for rendering and annotating 3D models. The presentation is aimed at librarians, digital curators and data managers interested in learning how to manage research datasets containing 3D media, and how to make them available within an open data environment with 3D-rendering and collaborative annotation features

Therefore, existing interoperability models are reviewed, a Delphi study to identify crucial aspects for the interoperability of web archives and digital libraries is conducted, technical interoperability standards and protocols are reviewed regarding their relevance for BlogForever, a simple approach to consider interoperability in specific usage scenarios is proposed, and a tangible approach to develop a succession plan that would allow a reliable transfer of content from the current digital archive to other digital repositories is presented

    An object query language for multimedia federations

    The Fischlar system provides a large centralised repository of multimedia files. As expansion is difficult in centralised systems and as different user groups have a requirement to define their own schemas, the EGTV (Efficient Global Transactions for Video) project was established to examine how the distribution of this database could be managed. The federated database approach is advocated where global schema is designed in a top-down approach, while all multimedia and textual data is stored in object-oriented (O-O) and object-relational (0-R) compliant databases. This thesis investigates queries and updates on large multimedia collections organised in the database federation. The goal of this research is to provide a generic query language capable of interrogating global and local multimedia database schemas. Therefore, a new query language EQL is defined to facilitate the querying of object-oriented and objectrelational database schemas in a database and platform independent manner, and acts as a canonical language for database federations. A new canonical language was required as the existing query language standards (SQL: 1999 and OQL) axe generally incompatible and translation between them is not trivial. EQL is supported with a formally defined object algebra and specified semantics for query evaluation. The ability to capture and store metadata of multiple database schemas is essential when constructing and querying a federated schema. Therefore we also present a new platform independent metamodel for specifying multimedia schemas stored in both object-oriented and object-relational databases. This metadata information is later used for the construction of a global schemas, and during the evaluation of local and global queries. Another important feature of any federated system is the ability to unambiguously define database schemas. The schema definition language for an EGTV database federation must be capable of specifying both object-oriented and object-relational schemas in the database independent format. As XML represents a standard for encoding and distributing data across various platforms, a language based upon XML has been developed as a part of our research. The ODLx (Object Definition Language XML) language specifies a set of XMLbased structures for defining complex database schemas capable of representing different multimedia types. The language is fully integrated with the EGTV metamodel through which ODLx schemas can be mapped to 0-0 and 0-R databases
