The nature and evaluation of commercial expert system building tools, revision 1
This memorandum reviews the factors that constitute an Expert System Building Tool (ESBT) and evaluates current tools in terms of these factors. Evaluation of these tools is based on their structure and their alternative forms of knowledge representation, inference mechanisms and developer end-user interfaces. Next, functional capabilities, such as diagnosis and design, are related to alternative forms of mechanization. The characteristics and capabilities of existing commercial tools are then reviewed in terms of these criteria
On the Use of Underspecified Data-Type Semantics for Type Safety in Low-Level Code
In recent projects on operating-system verification, C and C++ data types are
often formalized using a semantics that does not fully specify the precise byte
encoding of objects. It is well-known that such an underspecified data-type
semantics can be used to detect certain kinds of type errors. In general,
however, underspecified data-type semantics are unsound: they assign
well-defined meaning to programs that have undefined behavior according to the
C and C++ language standards.
A precise characterization of the type-correctness properties that can be
enforced with underspecified data-type semantics is still missing. In this
paper, we identify strengths and weaknesses of underspecified data-type
semantics for ensuring type safety of low-level systems code. We prove
sufficient conditions to detect certain classes of type errors and, finally,
identify a trade-off between the complexity of underspecified data-type
semantics and their type-checking capabilities.Comment: In Proceedings SSV 2012, arXiv:1211.587
Simulation-assisted control in building energy management systems
Technological advances in real-time data collection, data transfer and ever-increasing computational power are bringing simulation-assisted control and on-line fault detection and diagnosis (FDD) closer to reality than was imagined when building energy management systems (BEMSs) were introduced in the 1970s. This paper describes the development and testing of a prototype simulation-assisted controller, in which a detailed simulation program is embedded in real-time control decision making. Results from an experiment in a full-scale environmental test facility demonstrate the feasibility of predictive control using a physically-based thermal simulation program
Decompiler For Pseudo Code Generation
Decompiling is an area of interest for researchers in the field of software reverse engineering. When the source code from a high-level programming language is compiled, it loses a great deal of information, including code structure, syntax, and punctuation. The purpose of this research is to develop an algorithm that can efficiently decompile assembly language into pseudo C code. There are tools available that claim to extract high-level code from an executable file, but the results of these tools tend to be inaccurate and unreadable. Our proposed algorithm can decompile assembly code to recover many basic high-level programming structures, including if/else, loops, switches, and math instructions. The approach adopted here is different from that of existing tools. Our algorithm performs three passes through the assembly code, and includes a virtual execution of each assembly instruction. We also construct a dependency graph and incidence list to aid in the decompilation

Application of Advanced Early Warning Systems with Adaptive Protection
This project developed and field-tested two methods of Adaptive Protection systems utilizing synchrophasor data. One method detects conditions of system stress that can lead to unintended relay operation, and initiates a supervisory signal to modify relay response in real time to avoid false trips. The second method detects the possibility of false trips of impedance relays as stable system swings “encroach” on the relays’ impedance zones, and produces an early warning so that relay engineers can re-evaluate relay settings. In addition, real-time synchrophasor data produced by this project was used to develop advanced visualization techniques for display of synchrophasor data to utility operators and engineers
