    The Dark Side(-Channel) of Mobile Devices: A Survey on Network Traffic Analysis

    In recent years, mobile devices (e.g., smartphones and tablets) have met an increasing commercial success and have become a fundamental element of the everyday life for billions of people all around the world. Mobile devices are used not only for traditional communication activities (e.g., voice calls and messages) but also for more advanced tasks made possible by an enormous amount of multi-purpose applications (e.g., finance, gaming, and shopping). As a result, those devices generate a significant network traffic (a consistent part of the overall Internet traffic). For this reason, the research community has been investigating security and privacy issues that are related to the network traffic generated by mobile devices, which could be analyzed to obtain information useful for a variety of goals (ranging from device security and network optimization, to fine-grained user profiling). In this paper, we review the works that contributed to the state of the art of network traffic analysis targeting mobile devices. In particular, we present a systematic classification of the works in the literature according to three criteria: (i) the goal of the analysis; (ii) the point where the network traffic is captured; and (iii) the targeted mobile platforms. In this survey, we consider points of capturing such as Wi-Fi Access Points, software simulation, and inside real mobile devices or emulators. For the surveyed works, we review and compare analysis techniques, validation methods, and achieved results. We also discuss possible countermeasures, challenges and possible directions for future research on mobile traffic analysis and other emerging domains (e.g., Internet of Things). We believe our survey will be a reference work for researchers and practitioners in this research field.Comment: 55 page

    Securing the Next Generation Web

    With the ever-increasing digitalization of society, the need for secure systems is growing. While some security features, like HTTPS, are popular, securing web applications, and the clients we use to interact with them remains difficult.To secure web applications we focus on both the client-side and server-side. For the client-side, mainly web browsers, we analyze how new security features might solve a problem but introduce new ones. We show this by performing a systematic analysis of the new Content Security Policy (CSP)\ua0 directive navigate-to. In our research, we find that it does introduce new vulnerabilities, to which we recommend countermeasures. We also create AutoNav, a tool capable of automatically suggesting navigation policies for this directive. Finding server-side vulnerabilities in a black-box setting where\ua0 there is no access to the source code is challenging. To improve this, we develop novel black-box methods for automatically finding vulnerabilities. We\ua0 accomplish this by identifying key challenges in web scanning and combining the best of previous methods. Additionally, we leverage SMT solvers to\ua0 further improve the coverage and vulnerability detection rate of scanners.In addition to browsers, browser extensions also play an important role in the web ecosystem. These small programs, e.g. AdBlockers and password\ua0 managers, have powerful APIs and access to sensitive user data like browsing history. By systematically analyzing the extension ecosystem we find new\ua0 static and dynamic methods for detecting both malicious and vulnerable extensions. In addition, we develop a method for detecting malicious extensions\ua0 solely based on the meta-data of downloads over time. We analyze new attack vectors introduced by Google’s new vehicle OS, Android Automotive. This\ua0 is based on Android with the addition of vehicle APIs. Our analysis results in new attacks pertaining to safety, privacy, and availability. Furthermore, we\ua0 create AutoTame, which is designed to analyze third-party apps for vehicles for the vulnerabilities we found

    Security-centric ranking algorithm and two privacy scores to mitigate intrusive apps

    Smartphone users are constantly facing the risks of losing their private information to third-party mobile applications. Studies have revealed that the vast majority of users either do not pay attention to privacy or unable to comprehend privacy messages. Developers though have exploited this fact by asking users to grant their apps an enormous number of permissions. In this article, we propose and evaluate a new security-centric ranking algorithm built on top of the Elasticsearch engine to help users evade such apps. The algorithm calculates an intrusiveness score for an app based on its requested permissions, received system actions, and users' privacy preferences. As such, we further propose a new approach to capture these preferences. We evaluate the ranking algorithm using a million Android applications, contextual data and APK files, that we collect from the Google Play store. The results show that the scoring and reranking steps add minor overhead. Moreover, participants of the user studies gave positive feedback for the ranking algorithm and the privacy preferences solicitation approach. These results suggest that our proposed system would definitely protect the privacy of mobile users and pushes developers into requesting least amount of privileges. Still, there are many risks that endanger the users' privacy

    On the road with third-party apps: Security analysis of an in-vehicle app platform

    Digitalization has revolutionized the automotive industry. Modern cars are equipped with powerful Internetconnected infotainment systems, comparable to tablets and smartphones. Recently, several car manufacturers have announced the upcoming possibility to install third-party apps onto these infotainment systems. The prospect of running third-party code on a device that is integrated into a safety critical in-vehicle system raises serious concerns for safety, security, and user privacy. This paper investigates these concerns of in-vehicle apps. We focus on apps for the Android Automotive operating system which several car manufacturers have opted to use. While the architecture inherits much from regular Android, we scrutinize the adequateness of its security mechanisms with respect to the in-vehicle setting, particularly affecting road safety and user privacy. We investigate the attack surface and vulnerabilities for third-party in-vehicle apps. We analyze and suggest enhancements to such traditional Android mechanisms as app permissions and API control. Further, we investigate operating system support and how static and dynamic analysis can aid automatic vetting of in-vehicle apps. We develop AutoTame, a tool for vehicle-specific code analysis. We report on a case study of the countermeasures with a Spotify app using emulators and physical test beds from Volvo Cars

    Program Analysis Based Approaches to Ensure Security and Safety of Emerging Software Platforms

    Our smartphones, homes, hospitals, and automobiles are being enhanced with software that provide an unprecedentedly rich set of functionalities, which has created an enormous market for the development of software that run on almost every personal computing devices in a person's daily life, including security- and safety-critical ones. However, the software development support provided by the emerging platforms also raises security risks by allowing untrusted third-party code, which can potentially be buggy, vulnerable or even malicious to control user's device. Moreover, as the Internet-of-Things (IoT) technology is gaining vast adoptions by a wide range of industries, and is penetrating every aspects of people's life, safety risks brought by the open software development support of the emerging IoT platform (e.g., smart home) could bring more severe threat to the well-being of customers than what security vulnerabilities in mobile apps have done to a cell phone user. To address this challenge posed on the software security in emerging domains, my dissertation focuses on the flaws, vulnerabilities and malice in the software developed for platforms in these domains. Specifically, we demonstrate that systematic program analyses of software (1) Lead to an understanding of design and implementation flaws across different platforms that can be leveraged in miscellaneous attacks or causing safety problems; (2) Lead to the development of security mechanisms that limit the potential for these threats.We contribute static and dynamic program analysis techniques for three modern platforms in emerging domains -- smartphone, smart home, and autonomous vehicle. Our app analysis reveals various different vulnerabilities and design flaws on these platforms, and we propose (1) static analysis tool OPAnalyzer to automates the discovery of problems by searching for vulnerable code patterns; (2) dynamic testing tool AutoFuzzer to efficiently produce and capture domain specific issues that are previously undefined; and (3) propose new access control mechanism ContexIoT to strengthen the platform's immunity to the vulnerability and malice in third-party software. Concretely, we first study a vulnerability family caused by the open ports on mobile devices, which allows remote exploitation due to insufficient protection. We devise a tool called OPAnalyzer to perform the first systematic study of open port usage and their security implications on mobile platform, which effectively identify and characterize vulnerable open port usage at scale in popular Android apps. We further identify the lack of context-based access control as a main enabler for such attacks, and begin to seek for defense solution to strengthen the system security. We study the popular smart home platform, and find the existing access control mechanisms to be coarse-grand, insufficient, and undemanding. Taking lessons from previous permission systems, we propose the ContexIoT approach, a context-based permission system for IoT platform that supports third-party app development, which protects the user from vulnerability and malice in these apps through fine-grained identification of context. Finally, we design dynamic fuzzing tool, AutoFuzzer for the testing of self-driving functionalities, which demand very high code quality using improved testing practice combining the state-of-the-art fuzzing techniques with vehicular domain knowledge, and discover problems that lead to crashes in safety-critical software on emerging autonomous vehicle platform.PHDComputer Science & EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     SYSTEMATIC DISCOVERY OF ANDROID CUSTOMIZATION HAZARDS

    The open nature of Android ecosystem has naturally laid the foundation for a highly fragmented operating system. In fact, the official AOSP versions have been aggressively customized into thousands of system images by everyone in the customization chain, such as device manufacturers, vendors, carriers, etc. If not well thought-out, the customization process could result in serious security problems. This dissertation performs a systematic investigation of Android customization’ inconsistencies with regards to security aspects at various Android layers. It brings to light new vulnerabilities, never investigated before, caused by the under-regulated and complex Android customization. It first describes a novel vulnerability Hare and proves that it is security critical and extensive affecting devices from major vendors. A new tool is proposed to detect the Hare problem and to protect affected devices. This dissertation further discovers security configuration changes through a systematic differential analysis among custom devices from different vendors and demonstrates that they could lead to severe vulnerabilities if introduced unintentionally

    UNCOVERING AND MITIGATING UNSAFE PROGRAM INTEGRATIONS IN ANDROID

    Android’s design philosophy encourages the integration of resources and functionalities from multiple parties, even with different levels of trust. Such program integrations, on one hand, connect every party in the Android ecosystem tightly on one single device. On the other hand, they can also pose severe security problems, if the security design of the underlying integration schemes is not well thought-out. This dissertation systematically evaluates the security design of three integration schemes on Android, including framework module, framework proxy and 3rd-party code embedding. With the security risks identified in each scheme, it concludes that program integrations on Android are unsafe. Furthermore, new frameworks have been designed and implemented to detect and mitigate the threats. The evaluation results on the prototypes have demonstrated their effectiveness
