The cooperation-competition paradox: Managing coopetition across firm sizes

    Get PDF
This publication-based dissertation investigates how firms of different sizes and structures manage simultaneous cooperation and competition (coopetition). It includes five self-contained research papers, four designed for publication in peer-reviewed academic journals, and one developed for publication as an academic teaching case study. The first paper is a systematic literature review that identifies recent accomplishments and future trends in coopetition research. It delivers a comprehensive, unique, and updated view on the field, unifying scattered research findings into a cohesive and overarching framework. The second paper is a single-case study, zooming in on the inner workings of a corporate incubator. It explores the role and management of internal coopetition to develop entrepreneurial competencies for business model innovation. The third paper shifts the research focus toward large multinational enterprises to explore the formation of new coopetition relationships. It illuminates a new organizational design and accompanying management principles to address paradoxical tensions in the first and potentially most difficult phase of coopetition. The fourth paper taps into the complexities of coopetition between small- and mid-sized firms and large corporates. It uncovers three coopetition strategies and a mix of management principles for smaller firms to navigate asymmetrical risks in coopetition with larger companies. The fifth paper expands the scope of the dissertation to include an entire industry, analyzing the drivers, strategies, and outcomes of coopetition in a highly concentrated and regulated sector. Taken together, the five research papers collectively contribute to a more nuanced understanding about the management of coopetition and provide valuable implications and recommendations for practitioners

Talking about personal recovery in bipolar disorder: Integrating health research, natural language processing, and corpus linguistics to analyse peer online support forum posts

    Get PDF
Background: Personal recovery, ‘living a satisfying, hopeful and contributing lifeeven with the limitations caused by the illness’ (Anthony, 1993) is of particular value in bipolar disorder where symptoms often persist despite treatment. So far, personal recovery has only been studied in researcher-constructed environments (interviews, focus groups). Support forum posts can serve as a complementary naturalistic data source. Objective: The overarching aim of this thesis was to study personal recovery experiences that people living with bipolar disorder have shared in online support forums through integrating health research, NLP, and corpus linguistics in a mixed methods approach within a pragmatic research paradigm, while considering ethical issues and involving people with lived experience. Methods: This mixed-methods study analysed: 1) previous qualitative evidence on personal recovery in bipolar disorder from interviews and focus groups 2) who self-reports a bipolar disorder diagnosis on the online discussion platform Reddit 3) the relationship of mood and posting in mental health-specific Reddit forums (subreddits) 4) discussions of personal recovery in bipolar disorder subreddits. Results: A systematic review of qualitative evidence resulted in the first framework for personal recovery in bipolar disorder, POETIC (Purpose & meaning, Optimism & hope, Empowerment, Tensions, Identity, Connectedness). Mainly young or middle-aged US-based adults self-report a bipolar disorder diagnosis on Reddit. Of these, those experiencing more intense emotions appear to be more likely to post in mental health support subreddits. Their personal recovery-related discussions in bipolar disorder subreddits primarily focussed on three domains: Purpose & meaning (particularly reproductive decisions, work), Connectedness (romantic relationships, social support), Empowerment (self-management, personal responsibility). Support forum data highlighted personal recovery issues that exclusively or more frequently came up online compared to previous evidence from interviews and focus groups. Conclusion: This project is the first to analyse non-reactive data on personal recovery in bipolar disorder. Indicating the key areas that people focus on in personal recovery when posting freely and the language they use provides a helpful starting point for formal and informal carers to understand the concerns of people diagnosed with bipolar disorder and to consider how best to offer support

    Get PDF
This fifth volume on Advances and Applications of DSmT for Information Fusion collects theoretical and applied contributions of researchers working in different fields of applications and in mathematics, and is available in open-access. The collected contributions of this volume have either been published or presented after disseminating the fourth volume in 2015 in international conferences, seminars, workshops and journals, or they are new. The contributions of each part of this volume are chronologically ordered. First Part of this book presents some theoretical advances on DSmT, dealing mainly with modified Proportional Conflict Redistribution Rules (PCR) of combination with degree of intersection, coarsening techniques, interval calculus for PCR thanks to set inversion via interval analysis (SIVIA), rough set classifiers, canonical decomposition of dichotomous belief functions, fast PCR fusion, fast inter-criteria analysis with PCR, and improved PCR5 and PCR6 rules preserving the (quasi-)neutrality of (quasi-)vacuous belief assignment in the fusion of sources of evidence with their Matlab codes. Because more applications of DSmT have emerged in the past years since the apparition of the fourth book of DSmT in 2015, the second part of this volume is about selected applications of DSmT mainly in building change detection, object recognition, quality of data association in tracking, perception in robotics, risk assessment for torrent protection and multi-criteria decision-making, multi-modal image fusion, coarsening techniques, recommender system, levee characterization and assessment, human heading perception, trust assessment, robotics, biometrics, failure detection, GPS systems, inter-criteria analysis, group decision, human activity recognition, storm prediction, data association for autonomous vehicles, identification of maritime vessels, fusion of support vector machines (SVM), Silx-Furtif RUST code library for information fusion including PCR rules, and network for ship classification. Finally, the third part presents interesting contributions related to belief functions in general published or presented along the years since 2015. These contributions are related with decision-making under uncertainty, belief approximations, probability transformations, new distances between belief functions, non-classical multi-criteria decision-making problems with belief functions, generalization of Bayes theorem, image processing, data association, entropy and cross-entropy measures, fuzzy evidence numbers, negator of belief mass, human activity recognition, information fusion for breast cancer therapy, imbalanced data classification, and hybrid techniques mixing deep learning with belief functions as well

Treballs Finals de Grau d'Enginyeria Biomèdica. Facultat de Medicina i Ciències de la Salut. Universitat de Barcelona. Curs: 2022-2023. Tutor/Director: Sala Llonch, Roser, Mata Miquel, Christian, Munuera, JosepSkin disorders are the most common type of cancer in the world and the incident has been lately increasing over the past decades. Even with the most complex and advanced technologies, current image acquisition systems do not permit a reliable identification of the skin lesion by visual examination due to the challenging structure of the malignancy. This promotes the need for the implementation of automatic skin lesion segmentation methods in order to assist in physicians’ diagnostic when determining the lesion's region and to serve as a preliminary step for the classification of the skin lesion. Accurate and precise segmentation is crucial for a rigorous screening and monitoring of the disease's progression. For the purpose of the commented concern, the present project aims to accomplish a state-of-the-art review about the most predominant conventional segmentation models for skin lesion segmentation, alongside with a market analysis examination. With the rise of automatic segmentation tools, a wide number of algorithms are currently being used, but many are the drawbacks when employing them for dermatological disorders due to the high-level presence of artefacts in the image acquired. In light of the above, three segmentation techniques have been selected for the completion of the work: level set method, an algorithm combining GrabCut and k-means methods and an intensity automatic algorithm developed by Hospital Sant Joan de Déu de Barcelona research group. In addition, a validation of their performance is conducted for a further implementation of them in clinical training. The proposals, together with the got outcomes, have been accomplished by means of a publicly available skin lesion image database

Hybrid human-AI driven open personalized education

Attaining those skills that match labor market demand is getting increasingly complicated as prerequisite knowledge, skills, and abilities are evolving dynamically through an uncontrollable and seemingly unpredictable process. Furthermore, people's interests in gaining knowledge pertaining to their personal life (e.g., hobbies and life-hacks) are also increasing dramatically in recent decades. In this situation, anticipating and addressing the learning needs are fundamental challenges to twenty-first century education. The need for such technologies has escalated due to the COVID-19 pandemic, where online education became a key player in all types of training programs. The burgeoning availability of data, not only on the demand side but also on the supply side (in the form of open/free educational resources) coupled with smart technologies, may provide a fertile ground for addressing this challenge. Therefore, this thesis aims to contribute to the literature about the utilization of (open and free-online) educational resources toward goal-driven personalized informal learning, by developing a novel Human-AI based system, called eDoer. In this thesis, we discuss all the new knowledge that was created in order to complete the system development, which includes 1) prototype development and qualitative user validation, 2) decomposing the preliminary requirements into meaningful components, 3) implementation and validation of each component, and 4) a final requirement analysis followed by combining the implemented components in order develop and validate the planned system (eDoer). All in all, our proposed system 1) derives the skill requirements for a wide range of occupations (as skills and jobs are typical goals in informal learning) through an analysis of online job vacancy announcements, 2) decomposes skills into learning topics, 3) collects a variety of open/free online educational resources that address those topics, 4) checks the quality of those resources and topic relevance using our developed intelligent prediction models, 5) helps learners to set their learning goals, 6) recommends personalized learning pathways and learning content based on individual learning goals, and 7) provides assessment services for learners to monitor their progress towards their desired learning objectives. Accordingly, we created a learning dashboard focusing on three Data Science related jobs and conducted an initial validation of eDoer through a randomized experiment. Controlling for the effects of prior knowledge as assessed by the pretest, the randomized experiment provided tentative support for the hypothesis that learners who engaged with personal eDoer recommendations attain higher scores on the posttest than those who did not. The hypothesis that learners who received personalized content in terms of format, length, level of detail, and content type, would achieve higher scores than those receiving non-personalized content was not supported as a statistically significant result

Investigating Digital Corporate Reporting from an Upper Echelons Theory Perspective: Evidence from the Arab Middle East

    Get PDF
Utilising the insights of Upper Echelons Theory (UET) and bounded rationality assumption, this original study aimed to investigate the association between corporate leaders’ characteristics and both the extent and readability of Digital Corporate Reporting (DCR). Content analysis of corporate websites of 122 publicly listed Jordananian firms has been carried out. The logistics regression analysis revealed that maintaining a functioning corporate website is inversely associated with CEO age. This indicates that younger CEOs are more likely to retain a web presence for the firm than their older counterparts. The OLS regression analysis revealed that CEOs’ education and tenure were negatively associated with the extent of DCR. Moreover, it was found that Corporate Governance (CG) moderating variables hardly lessen this relationship. The results confirm the current thoughts regarding the rise of CEO effects in corporations with unique evidence from the Arab Middle East (AME). Building on the previous evidence, the study also aimed at uncovering the association between chairman characteristics and the readability of the digital version of the chairman’s Letter to Shareholders (LTS). A hand-built dataset from a sample of 379 LTS from 101 publicly listed firms in 7 AME countries over five years (2014 – 2018) were employed to achieve this objective. Focusing on the clarity of DCR, the results of this second part of this study emphasizes the potential of UET to provide incremental plausible explanations of the variance in the levels of readability of LTS. The clustered regression results of the panel data demonstrate that older and less educated chairpersons are associated with more readable disclosures. Such findings on disclosure styles demonstrate the power of individuals in positions of authority as a consequence of higher education and tenure. Such findings contribute to the evolving inquiry on the significance of readability for enhancing corporate disclosure transparency and have implications for improving the DCR extent and readability

Traineeship Report at the European Banking Authority – A critical assessment of the EBA’s stance on its 10 years of activity

    Get PDF
Internship Report presented as the partial requirement for obtaining a Master's degree in Law and Financial MarketsFrom the outset of its edification, the European Banking Authority’s (EBA) governance arrangements, procedures, and structure have been called into question, in particular in the context of the establishment of the Banking Union (BU) and consequently the Single Supervisory Mechanism (SSM). The extant studies have been treating the EBA with open criticism of its powers, decision-making processes, and regulatory independence. Since the EBA just turned 10 years old, it is appropriate to consider the recent advances in the EU’s supervisory and regulatory landscape. In the plea for a new fresh impetus on the EBA’s contribution to the Europeanisation of Banking Regulation and Supervision, this Report aims at shedding light on the academic research about the Agency, which was afforded by the unique opportunity of engaging in a traineeship at the EBA. Thus, we aim at answering the following research question by recuring to an interview process that collected the EBA’s staff viewpoints on the literature’s outstanding criticism points: Over the course of its 10 years of activity, has the EBA been meeting the expectations that were placed on it and rectified the shortcomings pointed out to its predecessor? While touching upon the EBA’s role in building up a Single Rulebook, supporting national supervisors with the necessary technical expertise, and spreading good practices which are paramount to walking towards a ‘more’ European setting, this Report finds that the legislator’s expectations placed on the EBA of advancing micro-prudential supervision and mitigating its predecessor’s regulatory gaps are progressively being attained. Contrary to the academic literature’s scepticism, the EBA remains a valuable piece in ensuring regulatory convergence, and financial stability, and has proven to be properly equipped to adapt to the potential pitfalls that might arise within the EU banking supervisory and regulatory framework.
