    Identification of Issues in E-Crime and Forensic Computing

    As organisations around the world have embraced the Internet and e-Commerce, so too have commercial criminals. e-Fraud is a multi-billion dollar threat to organisations, and like any other crime, these e-Crimes should be brought to justice. The process of gathering electronic evidence of an e-Fraud is known as forensic computing. This paper addresses the issues that law enforcement, private forensic specialists, network administrators, and e- Businesses face when attempting to prosecute e-Crimes. Through a research forum focus group these issues were identified and prioritized so that the computer forensic community can then identify the existing strengths, weaknesses and threats, and thereby introduce a strategy that allocates scarce resources and skills to the most needed areas

    UK security breach investigations report: an analysis of data compromise cases

    This report, rather than relying on questionnaires and self-reporting, concerns cases that were investigated by the forensic investigation team at 7Safe. Whilst removing any inaccuracies arising from self-reporting, the authors acknowledge that the limitation of the sample size remains. It is hoped that the unbiased reporting by independent investigators has yielded interesting facts about modern security breaches. All data in this study is based on genuine completed breach investigations conducted by the compromise investigation team over the last 18 months

    Engaging Government-Industry-University Partnerships to Further Gender Equity in STEM Workforce Education Through Technology and Information System Learning Tools

    This paper has two goals: First, to detail processes through which a project funded under a National Science Foundation workforce development program (Innovative Technology Experiences for Students and Teachers, ITEST) leveraged active partnerships among government agencies, industry firms, and universities to develop and study an innovative, out-of-school information system and technology workforce education program. The aim of the program was to improve equity of opportunity for high school girls. The program engaged young women from underrepresented subgroups in data science, analytics, information communication technology, and programming learning activities in an experiential, law enforcement computer forensics context. This description of the research team’s process is intended as inspiration and guidance to others considering developing similar programs targeting workforce development in science and technical fields through an equity lens. Second, this paper shares reflections from senior project personnel on lessons learned while working with cross-sector collaborations, including challenges encountered while implementing components of the program facilitated by the partnership model. The authors adopt a reflective practice orientation, considering implications regarding the most useful—and evolving—roles that cross-sector partnerships might play in developing programs to help students traditionally underrepresented in technical fields be more aware of, interested in, and prepared for careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) disciplines. In so doing, the authors offer insights about how university partners might address potential tensions involved in such collaborations

    Bakgrund I den nutida forskningen Ă€r det essentiellt att företag tar hĂ€nsyn till medarbetarnas motivation sĂ„ att de gynnas av det arbetssĂ€tt som tillĂ€mpas. En arbetsmetod som blivit allt vanligare Ă€r konceptet Lean som ursprungligen kommer frĂ„n den japanska bilindustrin. Lean har idag utvecklats till ett allmĂ€ngiltigt koncept som tillĂ€mpas i flertalet branscher vĂ€rlden över. Trots att konceptet innebĂ€r flertalet positiva aspekter har det fĂ„tt utstĂ„ stark kritik nĂ€r det kommer till de mĂ€nskliga aspekterna och forskare har stĂ€llt sig frĂ„gan om Lean Ă€r "Mean". Kritiken hĂ€rleds frĂ€mst till medarbetares arbetsmiljö i form av stress och brist pĂ„ variation, sjĂ€lvbestĂ€mmande, hĂ€lsa och vĂ€lmĂ„ende. FĂ„ empiriska studier har dĂ€remot genomförts som undersöker konsekvenserna som Lean fĂ„r pĂ„ medarbetares upplevda motivation. Syfte VĂ„rt syfte Ă€r att undersöka och öka förstĂ„elsen för medarbetares upplevelser av motivationen i företag som tillĂ€mpar Lean. Vidare har studien för avsikt att utreda om det föreligger en paradox mellan Lean och vad som motiverar medarbetare pĂ„ en arbetsplats. Metod Studien har utgĂ„tt frĂ„n en kvalitativ metod via intervjuer. För att göra en djupare undersökning och analysera hur vĂ„rt fenomen, motivation, upplevs i en kontext med Lean tillĂ€mpade vi SmĂ„-N-studier. Vi har Ă€ven haft en iterativ forskningsansats som förenat den deduktiva och induktiva ansatsen dĂ€r studien pendlat mellan teorier och empiriska observationer fram tills det slutgiltiga resultatet. Slutsatser Utefter medarbetarnas upplevelser har vi identifierat att det inte föreligger nĂ„gon paradox mellan Lean och motivation eftersom övervĂ€gande antal medarbetare upplevde att de Ă€r motiverade Ă€ven om företaget tillĂ€mpar Lean. Dock har studien kunnat urskilja bĂ„de stödjande och motverkande faktorer nĂ€r det kommer till medarbetarnas upplevda arbetsförhĂ„llanden som i sin tur inverkar pĂ„ motivationen. De motverkande faktorerna menar vi frĂ€mst beror pĂ„ att arbetsförhĂ„llandena i somliga fall innehĂ„ller höga prestationskrav, mĂ„lstyrning samt standardiseringar. Vidare upplevs motivationen överlag som mer positiv nĂ€r företagen anvĂ€nder en mjukare form av Lean dĂ€r samtliga medlemmars intressen beaktas.Background In modern research, it is essential that companies consider employees’ motivation so that they benefit from the applied practices. A working method that has become increasingly common is the concept Lean, which has its origin in the Japanese automotive industry. Today, Lean has evolved into a universal concept that is applied in many industries worldwide. Although the concept involves numerous positive aspects it has endured strong criticism when it comes to the human aspects and researchers have raised the question if Lean is "Mean". Criticism is derived primarily to employees’ working conditions in terms of stress and lack, variation, autonomy, health and wellbeing. However, few empirical studies have been carried out that examines the impact that Lean has on employees’ experienced motivation. Aim The aim is to increase the understanding of employees’ experienced motivation in companies that practice Lean. Further on the study has the intention to investigate if there is a paradox between Lean and what motivates employees on work. Methodology The study has been conducted through a qualitative method by interviews and to be able to do a deeper examination and analyze how our phenomenon, motivation, is experienced in a Lean context we applied small-N-studies. Our strategy has been iterative, combining both a deductive and inductive approach, where the study has varied between theories and empirical observations until the final result. Conclusions We have identified that there is no paradox between Lean and motivation since the majority of employees’ experienced that they are motivated even though the company practice Lean. Nevertheless the study shows that there are both supportive and counteractive factors when it comes to the employees’ experienced working conditions. The counteractive factors consists foremost of high performance standards, goal steering and standardizations, and have in some cases a negative influence on the working conditions. Furthermore the experienced motivation is more positive overall when the companies use a softer form of Lean where all the members’ interests are taken into account

    Cybersecurity: Are we Ready in Latin America and the Caribbean?

    This study aims to deepen our understanding of the cybersecurity risks, challenges and opportunities in Latin America and the Caribbean. Utilizing surveys and other data provided by experts and officials from 32 OAS Member States, the report examines each country’s cyber maturity in five dimensions: i) Cybersecurity policy and strategy; ii) Cyber culture and society; iii) Cybersecurity education, training and skills; iv) Legal and regulatory frameworks; and v) Standards, organizations, and technologies. It should also be noted that the OAS Cybersecurity Program received generous assistance from Microsoft, which helped identify key areas to be presented in the project’s inception phase. The report’s country-by-country approach should help us to develop a more nuanced understanding of each of our States’ cybersecurity regimes and assist policymakers and technicians to strategically improve existing cybersecurity efforts, and to design and implement new initiatives going forward. It must be acknowledged that these findings merely represent a snapshot in time of an ever changing landscape. Further studies will be necessary to continue to keep abreast of the state of cybersecurity in the Americas and the Caribbean. Nevertheless, we hope that by improving our collective understanding of the cybersecurity challenges and opportunities presently confronting our region, the information and analysis contained in this report will assist stakeholders in all sectors government, private sector, academia, and civil society to better work together to build a more secure, resilient and productive cyberspace in our hemisphere. We look forward to continuing to play a role in this vital mission

    Data analytics and algorithms in policing in England and Wales: Towards a new policy framework

    RUSI was commissioned by the Centre for Data Ethics and Innovation (CDEI) to conduct an independent study into the use of data analytics by police forces in England and Wales, with a focus on algorithmic bias. The primary purpose of the project is to inform CDEI’s review of bias in algorithmic decision-making, which is focusing on four sectors, including policing, and working towards a draft framework for the ethical development and deployment of data analytics tools for policing. This paper focuses on advanced algorithms used by the police to derive insights, inform operational decision-making or make predictions. Biometric technology, including live facial recognition, DNA analysis and fingerprint matching, are outside the direct scope of this study, as are covert surveillance capabilities and digital forensics technology, such as mobile phone data extraction and computer forensics. However, because many of the policy issues discussed in this paper stem from general underlying data protection and human rights frameworks, these issues will also be relevant to other police technologies, and their use must be considered in parallel to the tools examined in this paper. The project involved engaging closely with senior police officers, government officials, academics, legal experts, regulatory and oversight bodies and civil society organisations. Sixty nine participants took part in the research in the form of semi-structured interviews, focus groups and roundtable discussions. The project has revealed widespread concern across the UK law enforcement community regarding the lack of official national guidance for the use of algorithms in policing, with respondents suggesting that this gap should be addressed as a matter of urgency. Any future policy framework should be principles-based and complement existing police guidance in a ‘tech-agnostic’ way. Rather than establishing prescriptive rules and standards for different data technologies, the framework should establish standardised processes to ensure that data analytics projects follow recommended routes for the empirical evaluation of algorithms within their operational context and evaluate the project against legal requirements and ethical standards. The new guidance should focus on ensuring multi-disciplinary legal, ethical and operational input from the outset of a police technology project; a standard process for model development, testing and evaluation; a clear focus on the human–machine interaction and the ultimate interventions a data driven process may inform; and ongoing tracking and mitigation of discrimination risk
