    Is This a Joke? Detecting Humor in Spanish Tweets

    While humor has been historically studied from a psychological, cognitive and linguistic standpoint, its study from a computational perspective is an area yet to be explored in Computational Linguistics. There exist some previous works, but a characterization of humor that allows its automatic recognition and generation is far from being specified. In this work we build a crowdsourced corpus of labeled tweets, annotated according to its humor value, letting the annotators subjectively decide which are humorous. A humor classifier for Spanish tweets is assembled based on supervised learning, reaching a precision of 84% and a recall of 69%.Comment: Preprint version, without referra

    New frontiers in thermal analysis: A TG/Chemometrics approach for postmortem interval estimation in vitreous humor

    The coupling of thermogravimetric analysis (TG) associated with chemometrics is proposed as an innovative approach in thanatochemistry in order to develop a new analytical tool using thermal analysis for the characterization of vitreous humor. Vitreous samples were selected from the medicolegal deaths which occurred in casualty and where the death interval is known. Only hospital deaths with no metabolic disorders were taken, and the precise time of death was certified by the treating physician. Samples were analyzed by TG7 thermobalance, and principal component analysis was used to evaluate the results. The TG/Chemometrics outcomes show a clearly distinct behavior according to the postmortem interval, concluding that TG and Chemometrics are capable of predicting the time since death using only a few microliters of vitreous, without any pretreatment and with an hour of analysis tim

    Satirical News Detection and Analysis using Attention Mechanism and Linguistic Features

    Satirical news is considered to be entertainment, but it is potentially deceptive and harmful. Despite the embedded genre in the article, not everyone can recognize the satirical cues and therefore believe the news as true news. We observe that satirical cues are often reflected in certain paragraphs rather than the whole document. Existing works only consider document-level features to detect the satire, which could be limited. We consider paragraph-level linguistic features to unveil the satire by incorporating neural network and attention mechanism. We investigate the difference between paragraph-level features and document-level features, and analyze them on a large satirical news dataset.     Exploring Crosslingual Word Embeddings for Semantic Classification in Text and Dialogue

    Current approaches to learning crosslingual word emebeddings provide a decent performance when based on a big amount of parallel data. Considering the fact, that most of the languages are under-resourced and lack structured lexical materials, it makes it difficult to implement them into such methods, and, respectively, into any human language technologies. In this thesis we explore whether crosslingual mapping between two sets of monolingual word embeddings obtained separately is strong enough to present competitive results on semantic classification tasks. Our experiment involves learning crosslingual transfer between German and French word vectors based on the combination of adversarial approach and the Procrustes algorithm. We evaluate embeddings on topic classification, sentiment analysis and humour detection tasks. We use a German subset of a multilingual data set for training, and a French subset for testing our models. Results across German and French languages prove that word vectors mapped into a shared vector space are able to obtain and transfer semantic information from one language to another successfully. We also show that crosslingual mapping does not weaken the monolingual connections between words in one language

    This research addresses the question of how mascots design characteristics affect children recognition and affective response of this type of brand sign. Regarding the literature, it was clear for us the important contribution in studying the short and long term recognition. It is found that the different design characteristics associated with the universal design principles (abstraction, figurativity, symmetric, asymmetric, round and angular forms) stimulated different levels of recognition and affection among the children.     A Multi-label Classification System to Distinguish among Fake, Satirical, Objective and Legitimate News in Brazilian Portuguese

    Currently, there has been a significant increase in the diffusion of fake news worldwide, especially the political class, where the possible misinformation that can be propagated, appearing at the elections debates around the world. However, news with a recreational purpose, such as satirical news, is often confused with objective fake news. In this work, we decided to address the differences between objectivity and legitimacy of news documents, where each article is treated as belonging to two conceptual classes: objective/satirical and legitimate/fake. Therefore, we propose a DSS (Decision Support System) based on a Text Mining (TM) pipeline with a set of novel textual features using multi-label methods for classifying news articles on these two domains. For this, a set of multi-label methods was evaluated with a combination of different base classifiers and then compared with a multi-class approach. Also, a set of real-life news data was collected from several Brazilian news portals for these experiments. Results obtained reported our DSS as adequate (0.80 f1-score) when addressing the scenario of misleading news, challenging the multi-label perspective, where the multi-class methods (0.01 f1-score) overcome by the proposed method. Moreover, it was analyzed how each stylometric features group used in the experiments influences the result aiming to discover if a particular group is more relevant than others.
