    The Impact of Technical Copy Protection and Internet Services Usage on Software Piracy

    Software piracy has recently gained enormous attention, not only in the context of P2P-networks. As one countermeasure against software piracy, publishers have been implementing Digital Rights Management systems such as technical copy protection measures into their software products. This paper examines the impact of different technical copy protection measures and Internet services usage on software piracy using data from an internationally organized online survey. The results show that technical protection measures fail to achieve their protection goals, as none of the studied protection measures completely avoids piracy. A higher level of copy protection does not always make a legal software installation more likely. In contrast, a low level of protection does not necessarily lead to intense illegal copying. P2P- and Chat-networks compromise the security of technical copy protections as they provide access to cracked software copies, fostering software piracy. Based on our results, we discuss the impact of our findings on the publishers\u27 anti-piracy strategy from an economic point of view and present possible security improvements for hardware- and software-based copy protections

    The impact of new technologies and the Internet on the music industry, 1997-2001

    This dissertation analyses the controversial issues surrounding the rise of the onlinemusic space at the turn of the millennium.' The consumer-led online musicrevolution rode on the back of a new technology that enhanced connectivity butdisregarded notions of copyright and intellectual property. This enabled artists tocreate, promote and disseminate their own music, but also allowed end users to shareunauthorized music files, to the financial detriment of the music industry. Itexamines the major music corporations' attempts to halt what they considered to beundesirable behaviour, as well as the struggle over control of copyrights, andassesses the likely path of the development of viable online music services. Thefindings suggest that the music industry is capable of success within the onlineenvironment as long as it heeds the lessons of the consumer-driven market. Artistsand end users have been empowered by the technology, and niches have emerged fornew intermediaries to service new demands. The significance of this study is that itcontextualizes and analyses the turmoil and flux which this period experienced; itidentifies the underlying issues, and points the direction for the future of theindustry. This has been an important juncture in the history of the recording industry,and the new network technology has engendered considerable changes in therelationship between the major corporations and the public. While existing studies ofthe music industry and copyright law have informed the work, this dissertationprovides original research into how the online music space relates to and affects themajor label- dominated offline music industry, weaving together the various strandsin a multi-disciplinary approach

University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban 2015.The advent of the Internet as a music distribution channel led to significant transformation of the South African music industry at the end of the twentieth century. The Internet and electronic supply chain systems influences customers to migrate from physical product offerings to digital downloading platforms that offer access to digitalised music distribution and quasi-real-time consumption. While technological innovations have enhanced the digital distribution of music online, distribution systems have become a challenge within the supply chain network. This study aims to determine the implications of the paradigm shift in supply chain music distribution from analogue to digital. This research study has five objectives: firstly, to explore the challenges confronting the supply chain transition from analogue to digital music distribution systems; secondly, to examine the distribution operations processes for the digitalisation of music in relation to the effects of global market demand; thirdly, to evaluate the effects of supply chain value adding innovations in influencing digitalised music distribution and consumption in the recording industry; fourthly, to establish the extent of technological viability to which the Diffusion of Innovation theory enhances supply chain distribution competitiveness; and finally to assess the relative magnitude of supply chain competence and capability response to digital supply chain music distribution. The researcher selected an exploratory research design to explore digital music distribution in the South African recording industry. Univariate, bivariate and multivariate statistical analysis techniques are employed to analyse the data collected from 217 musicians. This study reveals several elements arising from the growth of digital music distribution in the Durban region, and makes a scholarly contribution to the promotion of the South African digital music market. The results provides support for: the disintermediation of physical retail stores which are perceived as the driver of digital music distribution; an increase in the number of independent artists and music entrepreneurs; and technologically compatible media devices that encourage more music downloads. The tools provided by the Internet inspire musicians to engage in creative music innovation, thereby creating global competitive standards.     Anthropology has neglected the study of music. Music and Digital Media shows how and why this should be redressed. It does so by enabling music to expand the horizons of digital anthropology, demonstrating how the field can build interdisciplinary links to music and sound studies, digital/media studies, and science and technology studies. Music and Digital Media is the first comparative ethnographic study of the impact of digital media on music worldwide. It offers a radical and lucid new theoretical framework for understanding digital media through music, showing that music is today where the promises and problems of the digital assume clamouring audibility. The book contains ten chapters, eight of which present comprehensive original ethnographies; they are bookended by an authoritative introduction and a comparative postlude. Five chapters address popular, folk, art and crossover musics in the global South and North, including Kenya, Argentina, India, Canada and the UK. Three chapters bring the digital experimentally to the fore, presenting pioneering ethnographies of an extra-legal peer-to-peer site and the streaming platform Spotify, a series of prominent internet-mediated music genres, and the first ethnography of a global software package, the interactive music platform Max. The book is unique in bringing ethnographic research on popular, folk, art and crossover musics from the global North and South into a comparative framework on a large scale, and creates an innovative new paradigm for comparative anthropology. It shows how music enlarges anthropology while demanding to be understood with reference to classic themes of anthropological theory
