Improving Sea-Surface Remote Sensing of Ocean Wind Vectors by Scatterometers
Though scatterometers have been used to sense global ocean surface wind vectors for over 40 years, there remain some significant shortcomings. The largest problems appear in retrieving the wind vector when the ocean is being driven by high wind speeds or when rain is present in the beam-illuminated volume. Geophysical model functions (GMFs) developed using data from high-wind events can improve retrievals at high wind speeds, but only if sufficient ground truth measurements exist in the scatterometer swath. Airborne scatterometers, such as the Imaging Wind and Rain Airborne Profiler (IWRAP) developed by the Microwave Remote Sensing Laboratory (MIRSL) at the University of Massachusetts Amherst (UMass), are well-suited for collecting such high-wind data, largely due to their abilities to reposition to areas of interest, sample the ocean surface on a small scale, and use complementary in-situ sensors. The IWRAP system is also able to investigate the effect of precipitation impact (the “splash effect”) on the sea surface normalized radar cross-section (NRCS), since it can discriminate between volume and surface effects of precipitation. This dissertation will improve upon the existing IWRAP GMF and quantify the effect of precipitation on wind vector retrievals. Additionally, IWRAP is used to observe the effects of Earth-incidence angle and polarization on the sea-surface radar backscatter, helping scatterometer GMFs to be applicable to other satellite sensors. IWRAP and collocated Stepped Frequency Microwave Radiometer (SFMR) data were gathered from 4 years of flight experiments. Using this data, the high-wind IWRAP GMF is extended to incidence angles near 22° at C- and Ku-band VV- and HH-polarization from 15 m s−1 to 45 m s−1. There is also a revision made to the higher harmonics of the GMF near 50° incidence, but the mean NRCS appears to be modeled appropriately. There is no splash effect observed in the mean NRCS or first harmonic at wind speeds from 15 m s−1 to 45 m s−1. The second harmonic shows some muted behavior in precipitation. Lastly, a wind speed dependence is observed in the VV/HH NRCS polarization ratio in both incidence angle and azimuth
TECHNIQUES AND INSTRUMENTATION FOR PHASED ARRAY CALIBRATION
Active phased arrays suffer the inherent problem of excitation errors, i.e., incorrect phase and amplitude excitation of the antenna elements. Excitation errors degrade critical performance parameters since they increase sidelobe level and reduce antenna gain and beam pointing accuracy. To ensure the correct operation of the array, it is necessary to quantify and compensate the phase and amplitude errors of each antenna element. The compensation is accomplished by calibrating the phased array radar. Calibration challenges include the quantification and compensation of errors initially, as well as maintenance of the calibration state once the system is fielded. This dissertation presents research on improving the calibration of the active phased array front-end for radar systems. A combination of custom-made instrumentation with initial and in-situ calibration techniques is proposed to calibrate an active array test-bed. The test-bed consists of an 88 elements C-band array, and was developed in collaboration with NCAR-EOL to provide software and hardware features that enable the proposed calibration schemes.
Different calibration techniques were experimentally tested. First, an initial calibration technique for phased array prototypes is proposed. The technique employs a planar NF scanner to sample the excitation of each antenna element, and also to scan the embedded element antenna patterns of the prototype. The novelty of the approach is that it combines the collected excitation data with the scanned embedded elements to allow the prediction of both the co- and cross-polar pattern components of the array. On the other hand, to explore techniques that do not rely on external equipment and use built-in feedback mechanisms instead, mutual coupling-based calibration is reviewed and implemented. Two techniques were tested: an initial type, proposed by Bekers et al., and a proposed in-situ type, conceived specifically for analog architectures, to track errors during fielded operation. It was found that mutual coupling calibration techniques are excellent options for in-situ applications, with a root mean squared error (RMSE) in phase and amplitude of 0.75 and 0.12 dB, respectively. Whereas, for initial type calibration, the tested mutual coupling-based technique yields a RMSE of 2.5 and 1 dB, respectively, which is not accurate enough to replace conventional park and probe for initial calibration of small arrays. Finally, to complement calibration theory, the required calibration instrumentation is reviewed, and more importantly, a novel scanner, designed exclusively for phased array front-end characterization, is introduced
Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) Project Algorithm Theoretical Basis Document SMAP L1B Radiometer Data Product: L1B_TB
The purpose of the Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) radiometer calibration algorithm is to convert Level 0 (L0) radiometer digital counts data into calibrated estimates of brightness temperatures referenced to the Earth's surface within the main beam. The algorithm theory in most respects is similar to what has been developed and implemented for decades for other satellite radiometers; however, SMAP includes two key features heretofore absent from most satellite borne radiometers: radio frequency interference (RFI) detection and mitigation, and measurement of the third and fourth Stokes parameters using digital correlation. The purpose of this document is to describe the SMAP radiometer and forward model, explain the SMAP calibration algorithm, including approximations, errors, and biases, provide all necessary equations for implementing the calibration algorithm and detail the RFI detection and mitigation process. Section 2 provides a summary of algorithm objectives and driving requirements. Section 3 is a description of the instrument and Section 4 covers the forward models, upon which the algorithm is based. Section 5 gives the retrieval algorithm and theory. Section 6 describes the orbit simulator, which implements the forward model and is the key for deriving antenna pattern correction coefficients and testing the overall algorithm

Earth resources shuttle imaging radar
A report is presented on a preliminary design of a Synthetic Array Radar (SAR) intended for experimental use with the space shuttle program. The radar is called Earth Resources Shuttle Imaging Radar (ERSIR). Its primary purpose is to determine the usefulness of SAR in monitoring and managing earth resources. The design of the ERSIR, along with tradeoffs made during its evolution is discussed. The ERSIR consists of a flight sensor for collecting the raw radar data and a ground sensor used both for reducing these radar data to images and for extracting earth resources information from the data. The flight sensor consists of two high powered coherent, pulse radars, one that operates at L and the other at X-band. Radar data, recorded on tape can be either transmitted via a digital data link to a ground terminal or the tape can be delivered to the ground station after the shuttle lands.
