    Corporate envy and emotional dynamics in the internal selection process of corporate venturing initiatives

    Corporate venturing initiatives, which exemplify corporate entrepreneurial behavior, follow an evolutionary path of variation, selection, and retention. While their external selection is a consequence of their performance, their internal selection is subject to forces of complementarity and legitimacy, and how well competition from other initiatives is overcome. This chapter aims to unfold the dynamics of the internal selection process of initiatives, focusing on its emotional dimensions. Assuming that organizational agents have a deliberate role in guiding the internal selection process of initiatives, the chapter examines how organizational agents' emotional dynamics influence this process. The chapter draws its theoretical basis from the intraorganizational evolutionary perspective and the literature on emotions in organizations. The case of a corporate venturing initiative and the narratives of four managers involved directly and indirectly in the initiative are used to illustrate how the emotional dynamics of organizational members evoked envy toward a venturing initiative and directly impacted its degree of competition and complementarity with other interacting initiatives, ultimately hampering its selection

    Mixed Initiative Systems for Human-Swarm Interaction: Opportunities and Challenges

    Human-swarm interaction (HSI) involves a number of human factors impacting human behaviour throughout the interaction. As the technologies used within HSI advance, it is more tempting to increase the level of swarm autonomy within the interaction to reduce the workload on humans. Yet, the prospective negative effects of high levels of autonomy on human situational awareness can hinder this process. Flexible autonomy aims at trading-off these effects by changing the level of autonomy within the interaction when required; with mixed-initiatives combining human preferences and automation's recommendations to select an appropriate level of autonomy at a certain point of time. However, the effective implementation of mixed-initiative systems raises fundamental questions on how to combine human preferences and automation recommendations, how to realise the selected level of autonomy, and what the future impacts on the cognitive states of a human are. We explore open challenges that hamper the process of developing effective flexible autonomy. We then highlight the potential benefits of using system modelling techniques in HSI by illustrating how they provide HSI designers with an opportunity to evaluate different strategies for assessing the state of the mission and for adapting the level of autonomy within the interaction to maximise mission success metrics.Comment: Author version, accepted at the 2018 IEEE Annual Systems Modelling Conference, Canberra, Australi

    Developing Objective Communication-based Measures of Trust for Human-Autonomy Teams

    As artificial intelligence capabilities have improved, humans have begun teaming with autonomous agents that have the capability to communicate and make intelligent decisions that are adaptable to task situations. Trust is a core component of human-human and human-autonomy team (HAT) interaction. As with all-human teams, the amount of trust held within a HAT will impact the team’s ability to perform effectively and achieve its goals. A recent theoretical framework, distributed dynamic team trust (D2T2; Huang et al., 2021), relates trust, team interaction measures, and team performance in HATs and has called for interaction-based measures of trust that go beyond traditional questionnaire-based approaches to measure the dynamics of trust in real-time. In this research, these relationships are examined by investigating HAT interaction communication-based measures (ICM; amount, frequency, affect, and “pushing” vs. “pulling” of information between team members) as a mechanism for D2T2 and tested for predictive validity using questionnaire-based trust measures as well as team performance in a three-team member remotely-piloted aerial system (RPAS) HAT synthetic task. Results suggest that ICM can be used as a measure for team performance in real-time. Specifically, ICM was a significant predictor of team performance and not trust, and trust was not a significant predictor of team performance. Exploratory factor analyses of the trust questionnaire items discovered clear differences in how human teammates characterize trust in all-human teams and HATs. Specifically for HATs, interpersonal and technical factors associated with trust in autonomous agents were found as a result of dynamic exposure to the autonomous agent by distinct stakeholders through communication. These findings confirmed the underlying theory behind D2T2 as a framework that includes both interpersonal and technical factors related to trust in HAT along a dynamic timeline among different types of stakeholders. The findings provide some insight into the dynamic nature of trust, but continued research to discover interactive measures of trust is necessary.M.S

    Embodied Robot Models for Interdisciplinary Emotion Research

    Due to their complex nature, emotions cannot be properly understood from the perspective of a single discipline. In this paper, I discuss how the use of robots as models is beneficial for interdisciplinary emotion research. Addressing this issue through the lens of my own research, I focus on a critical analysis of embodied robots models of different aspects of emotion, relate them to theories in psychology and neuroscience, and provide representative examples. I discuss concrete ways in which embodied robot models can be used to carry out interdisciplinary emotion research, assessing their contributions: as hypothetical models, and as operational models of specific emotional phenomena, of general emotion principles, and of specific emotion ``dimensions''. I conclude by discussing the advantages of using embodied robot models over other models.Peer reviewe
