    Moving Target Defense Using Live Migration of Docker Containers

    abstract: Today the information technology systems have addresses, software stacks and other configuration remaining unchanged for a long period of time. This paves way for malicious attacks in the system from unknown vulnerabilities. The attacker can take advantage of this situation and plan their attacks with sufficient time. To protect our system from this threat, Moving Target Defense is required where the attack surface is dynamically changed, making it difficult to strike. In this thesis, I incorporate live migration of Docker container using CRIU (checkpoint restore) for moving target defense. There are 460K Dockerized applications, a 3100% growth over 2 years[1]. Over 4 billion containers have been pulled so far from Docker hub. Docker is supported by a large and fast growing community of contributors and users. As an example, there are 125K Docker Meetup members worldwide. As we see industry adapting to Docker rapidly, a moving target defense solution involving containers is beneficial for being robust and fast. A proof of concept implementation is included for studying performance attributes of Docker migration. The detection of attack is using a scenario involving definitions of normal events on servers. By defining system activities, and extracting syslog in centralized server, attack can be detected via extracting abnormal activates and this detection can be a trigger for the Docker migration.Dissertation/ThesisMasters Thesis Computer Science 201

    Three Decades of Deception Techniques in Active Cyber Defense -- Retrospect and Outlook

    Deception techniques have been widely seen as a game changer in cyber defense. In this paper, we review representative techniques in honeypots, honeytokens, and moving target defense, spanning from the late 1980s to the year 2021. Techniques from these three domains complement with each other and may be leveraged to build a holistic deception based defense. However, to the best of our knowledge, there has not been a work that provides a systematic retrospect of these three domains all together and investigates their integrated usage for orchestrated deceptions. Our paper aims to fill this gap. By utilizing a tailored cyber kill chain model which can reflect the current threat landscape and a four-layer deception stack, a two-dimensional taxonomy is developed, based on which the deception techniques are classified. The taxonomy literally answers which phases of a cyber attack campaign the techniques can disrupt and which layers of the deception stack they belong to. Cyber defenders may use the taxonomy as a reference to design an organized and comprehensive deception plan, or to prioritize deception efforts for a budget conscious solution. We also discuss two important points for achieving active and resilient cyber defense, namely deception in depth and deception lifecycle, where several notable proposals are illustrated. Finally, some outlooks on future research directions are presented, including dynamic integration of different deception techniques, quantified deception effects and deception operation cost, hardware-supported deception techniques, as well as techniques developed based on better understanding of the human element.Comment: 19 page

    Cybersecurity Games: Mathematical Approaches for Cyber Attack and Defense Modeling

    Cyber-attacks targeting individuals and enterprises have become a predominant part of the computer/information age. Such attacks are becoming more sophisticated and prevalent on a day-to-day basis. The exponential growth of cyber plays and cyber players necessitate the inauguration of new methods and research for better understanding the cyber kill chain, particularly with the rise of advanced and novel malware and the extraordinary growth in the population of Internet residents, especially connected Internet of Things (IoT) devices. Mathematical modeling could be used to represent real-world cyber-attack situations. Such models play a beneficial role when it comes to the secure design and evaluation of systems/infrastructures by providing a better understanding of the threat itself and the attacker\u27s conduct during the lifetime of a cyber attack. Therefore, the main goal of this dissertation is to construct a proper theoretical framework to be able to model and thus evaluate the defensive strategies/technologies\u27 effectiveness from a security standpoint. To this end, we first present a Markov-based general framework to model the interactions between the two famous players of (network) security games, i.e., a system defender and an attacker taking actions to reach its attack objective(s) in the game. We mainly focus on the most significant and tangible aspects of sophisticated cyber attacks: (1) the amount of time it takes for the adversary to accomplish its mission and (2) the success probabilities of fulfilling the attack objective(s) by translating attacker-defender interactions into well-defined games and providing rigorous cryptographic security guarantees for a system given both players\u27 tactics and strategies. We study various attack-defense scenarios, including Moving Target Defense (MTD) strategies, multi-stage attacks, and Advanced Persistent Threats (APT). We provide general theorems about how the probability of a successful adversary defeating a defender’s strategy is related to the amount of time (or any measure of cost) spent by the adversary in such scenarios. We also introduce the notion of learning in cybersecurity games and describe a general game of consequences meaning that each player\u27s chances of making a progressive move in the game depend on its previous actions. Finally, we walk through a malware propagation and botnet construction game in which we investigate the importance of defense systems\u27 learning rates to fight against the self-propagating class of malware such as worms and bots. We introduce a new propagation modeling and containment strategy called the learning-based model and study the containment criterion for the propagation of the malware based on theoretical and simulation analysis

    Cyber deception against DDoS attack using moving target defence framework in SDN IOT-EDGE networks

    Software Defined Networking (SDN) networking paradigm advancements are advantageous, but they have also brought new security concerns. The Internet of Things (IoT) Edge Computing servers provide closer access to cloud services and is also a point of target for availability attacks. The Distributed Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on SDN IoT-Edge Computing caused by botnet of IoT hosts has compromised major services and is still an impending concern due to the Work From Home virtual office shift attributed by Covid19 pandemic. The effectiveness of a Moving Target Defense (MTD) technique based on SDN for combating DDoS attacks in IoT-Edge networks was investigated in this study with a test scenario based on a smart building. An MTD Reactive and Proactive Network Address Shuffling Mechanism was developed, tested, and evaluated with results showing successful defence against UDP, TCP SYN, and LAND DDoS attacks; preventing IoT devices from being botnet compromised due to the short-lived network address; and ensuring reliable system performance
