    Distributed file systems for Unix

    With the advent of distributed systems, mechanisms that support efficient resource sharing are necessary to exploit a distributed architecture. One of the key resources UNIX provides is a hierarchical file system. Early efforts supported distributed UNIX systems by copying files and sending mail between individual machines. The desire to provide transparent mechanisms on which distributed systems access resources has propelled the development of distributed file systems. This thesis presents a brief history of the development of distributed systems based on UNIX, and surveys recent implementations of distributed file systems based on UNIX. The IBIS distributed file system is an example of the latter. The original capabilities of IBIS are discussed and modifications that enhance these capabilities described

    The Integral Burst Alert System (IBAS)

    We describe the INTEGRAL Burst Alert System (IBAS): the automatic software for the rapid distribution of the coordinates of the Gamma-Ray Bursts detected by INTEGRAL. IBAS is implemented as a ground based system, working on the near-real time telemetry stream. During the first six months of operations, six GRB have been detected in the field of view of the INTEGRAL instruments and localized by IBAS. Positions with an accuracy of a few arcminutes are currently distributed by IBAS to the community for follow-up observations within a few tens of seconds of the event.Comment: 7 pages, latex, 5 figures, Accepted for publication on A&A Special Issue on First Science with INTEGRA

    Real time localization of Gamma Ray Bursts with INTEGRAL

    The INTEGRAL satellite has been successfully launched in October 2002 and has recently started its operational phase. The INTEGRAL Burst Alert System (IBAS) will distribute in real time the coordinates of the GRBs detected with INTEGRAL. After a brief introduction on the INTEGRAL instruments, we describe the main IBAS characteristics and report on the initial results. During the initial performance and verification phase of the INTEGRAL mission, which lasted about two months, two GRBs have been localized with accuracy of about 2-4 arcmin. These observations have allowed us to validate the IBAS software, which is now expected to provide quick (few seconds delay) and precise (few arcmin) localization for about 10-15 GRBs per year.Comment: 6 pages, latex, 3 figures, submitted to Adv.     To aid the creation and through-life support of large complex engineering products, organisations are placing a greater emphasis on constructing complete and accurate records of design activities. Current documentary approaches are not sufficient to capture activities and decisions in their entirety and can lead to organisations revisiting and in some cases reworking design decisions in order to understand previous design episodes. This paper presents an overview of the challenges in creating accurate, re-usable records of synchronous design activities, enhancing the through-life support of engineering products, followed by the development of an information capture software system to address these challenges. The main objectives for the development of the Knowledge Enhanced Notes system are described followed by the techniques chosen to address the objectives, and finally a description of a use-case for the system. Whilst the focus of the KEN System was to aid the creation and through-life support of large complex engineering products through constructing complete and accurate records of design activities, the system is entirely generic in its application to synchronous activities

    Hypermedia support for argumentation-based rationale: 15 years on from gIBIS and QOC

    Having developed, used and evaluated some of the early IBIS-based approaches to design rationale (DR) such as gIBIS and QOC in the late 1980s/mid-1990s, we describe the subsequent evolution of the argumentation-based paradigm through software support, and perspectives drawn from modeling and meeting facilitation. Particular attention is given to the challenge of negotiating the overheads of capturing this form of rationale. Our approach has maintained a strong emphasis on keeping the representational scheme as simple as possible to enable real time meeting mediation and capture, attending explicitly to the skills required to use the approach well, particularly for the sort of participatory, multi-stakeholder requirements analysis demanded by many design problems. However, we can then specialize the notation and the way in which the tool is used in the service of specific methodologies, supported by a customizable hypermedia environment, and interoperable with other software tools. After presenting this approach, called Compendium, we present examples to illustrate the capabilities for support security argumentation in requirements engineering, template driven modeling for document generation, and IBIS-based indexing of and navigation around video records of meetings

    A Programmable Neural Oscillator Cell

    A programmable analog neural oscillator cell architecture is presented. The proposed neuron circuit is of hysteretic neural nature with its implementation based on operational transconductance amplifiers (OTA's). The hysteresis loop as well as the frequency of oscillation are voltage (or current) dependent. The architecture, which involves two OTA's, a current mirror, a capacitor, a diode, and a resistor is very suitable for monolithic integrated circuits.
