Hypergraph models of metabolism
In this paper, we employ a directed hypergraph model to investigate the extent to which environmental variability influences the set of available biochemical reactions within a living cell. Such an approach avoids the limitations of the usual complex network formalism by allowing for the multilateral relationships (i.e. connections involving more than two nodes) that naturally occur within many biological processes. More specifically, we extend the concept of network reciprocity to complex hyper-networks, thus enabling us to characterise a network in terms of the existence of mutual hyper-connections, which may be considered a proxy for metabolic network complexity. To demonstrate these ideas, we study 115 metabolic hyper-networks of bacteria, each of which can be classified into one of 6 increasingly varied habitats. In particular, we found that reciprocity increases significantly with increased environmental variability, supporting the view that organism adaptability leads to increased complexities in the resultant biochemical networks
Quantifying the benefits of vehicle pooling with shareability networks
Taxi services are a vital part of urban transportation, and a considerable
contributor to traffic congestion and air pollution causing substantial adverse
effects on human health. Sharing taxi trips is a possible way of reducing the
negative impact of taxi services on cities, but this comes at the expense of
passenger discomfort quantifiable in terms of a longer travel time. Due to
computational challenges, taxi sharing has traditionally been approached on
small scales, such as within airport perimeters, or with dynamical ad-hoc
heuristics. However, a mathematical framework for the systematic understanding
of the tradeoff between collective benefits of sharing and individual passenger
discomfort is lacking. Here we introduce the notion of shareability network
which allows us to model the collective benefits of sharing as a function of
passenger inconvenience, and to efficiently compute optimal sharing strategies
on massive datasets. We apply this framework to a dataset of millions of taxi
trips taken in New York City, showing that with increasing but still relatively
low passenger discomfort, cumulative trip length can be cut by 40% or more.
This benefit comes with reductions in service cost, emissions, and with split
fares, hinting towards a wide passenger acceptance of such a shared service.
Simulation of a realistic online system demonstrates the feasibility of a
shareable taxi service in New York City. Shareability as a function of trip
density saturates fast, suggesting effectiveness of the taxi sharing system
also in cities with much sparser taxi fleets or when willingness to share is

Echo State Networks with Self-Normalizing Activations on the Hyper-Sphere
Among the various architectures of Recurrent Neural Networks, Echo State
Networks (ESNs) emerged due to their simplified and inexpensive training
procedure. These networks are known to be sensitive to the setting of
hyper-parameters, which critically affect their behaviour. Results show that
their performance is usually maximized in a narrow region of hyper-parameter
space called edge of chaos. Finding such a region requires searching in
hyper-parameter space in a sensible way: hyper-parameter configurations
marginally outside such a region might yield networks exhibiting fully
developed chaos, hence producing unreliable computations. The performance gain
due to optimizing hyper-parameters can be studied by considering the
memory--nonlinearity trade-off, i.e., the fact that increasing the nonlinear
behavior of the network degrades its ability to remember past inputs, and
vice-versa. In this paper, we propose a model of ESNs that eliminates critical
dependence on hyper-parameters, resulting in networks that provably cannot
enter a chaotic regime and, at the same time, denotes nonlinear behaviour in
phase space characterised by a large memory of past inputs, comparable to the
one of linear networks. Our contribution is supported by experiments
corroborating our theoretical findings, showing that the proposed model
displays dynamics that are rich-enough to approximate many common nonlinear
systems used for benchmarking
Load Forecasting Based Distribution System Network Reconfiguration-A Distributed Data-Driven Approach
In this paper, a short-term load forecasting approach based network
reconfiguration is proposed in a parallel manner. Specifically, a support
vector regression (SVR) based short-term load forecasting approach is designed
to provide an accurate load prediction and benefit the network reconfiguration.
Because of the nonconvexity of the three-phase balanced optimal power flow, a
second-order cone program (SOCP) based approach is used to relax the optimal
power flow problem. Then, the alternating direction method of multipliers
(ADMM) is used to compute the optimal power flow in distributed manner.
Considering the limited number of the switches and the increasing computation
capability, the proposed network reconfiguration is solved in a parallel way.
The numerical results demonstrate the feasible and effectiveness of the

Structural Deep Embedding for Hyper-Networks
Network embedding has recently attracted lots of attentions in data mining.
Existing network embedding methods mainly focus on networks with pairwise
relationships. In real world, however, the relationships among data points
could go beyond pairwise, i.e., three or more objects are involved in each
relationship represented by a hyperedge, thus forming hyper-networks. These
hyper-networks pose great challenges to existing network embedding methods when
the hyperedges are indecomposable, that is to say, any subset of nodes in a
hyperedge cannot form another hyperedge. These indecomposable hyperedges are
especially common in heterogeneous networks. In this paper, we propose a novel
Deep Hyper-Network Embedding (DHNE) model to embed hyper-networks with
indecomposable hyperedges. More specifically, we theoretically prove that any
linear similarity metric in embedding space commonly used in existing methods
cannot maintain the indecomposibility property in hyper-networks, and thus
propose a new deep model to realize a non-linear tuplewise similarity function
while preserving both local and global proximities in the formed embedding
space. We conduct extensive experiments on four different types of
hyper-networks, including a GPS network, an online social network, a drug
network and a semantic network. The empirical results demonstrate that our
method can significantly and consistently outperform the state-of-the-art
