    We devise a retrospective panel data approach to evaluate the effects of fair trade affiliation on the schooling decisions of a sample of Thai organic rice producers across the past 20 years. We find that the probability of school enrolment in families with more than two children is significantly affected by affiliation years. The finding is robust when dealing with endogeneity and heterogeneity issues in the estimate. The non-positive preaffiliation performance documents that our result is not affected by selection bias and that fair trade affiliation generates a significant break in the schooling decisions of affiliated households.child schooling, market access, fair trade.

    International audienceThe recent IEEE 802.15.4e standard has introduced two interesting modes of operation: Time Slotted Channel Hopping (TSCH) and Deterministic and Synchronous Multi-channel Extension (DSME). Both provide a mix of time and frequency division to improve the performance of the previously available synchronized MAC mode (beacon-enabled 802.15.4). In this paper, we compare the performance of DSME and TSCH with respect to the energy consumption, throughput, and delay through an analysis of their respective ways of operation. We use an energy consumption model coming from our previous experience on the design of recent energy harvesting motes for the GreenNet platform. Our results show that DSME performs slightly better in terms of the energy consumption spent in data transfers. Both protocols exhibit similar delays for a given duty cycle, nevertheless, TSCH obtains shorter delay and higher throughput for low duty cycles. For higher duty cycles, TSCH results in lower throughput—for applications that send little data, the fixed slot configuration of TSCH results in wasted bandwidth. DSME can allocate shorter slots, which is beneficial for applications that transmit short packets

    Software controlled low cost thermoelectric energy harvester for ultra-low power wireless sensor nodes

    General hardware architecture of an energy-harvested wireless sensor network node (EH-WSN) can be divided into power, sensing, computing and communication subsystems. Interrelation between these subsystems in combination with constrained energy supply makes design and implementation of EH-WSN a complex and challenging task. Separation of these subsystems into distinct hardware modules simplifies the design process and makes the architecture and software more generic, leading to more flexible solutions. From the other hand, tightly coupling these subsystems gives more room for optimizations at the price of increased complexity of the hardware and software. Additional engineering effort could be justified by a smaller, cheaper hardware, and more energy-efficient a wireless sensor node. The aim of this paper is to push further technical and economical boundaries related to EH-WSN by proposing a novel architecture which – by tightly coupling software and hardware of power, computing, and communication subsystems – allows the wireless sensor node to be powered by a thermoelectric generator working with about 1.5°C temperature difference while keeping the cost of all electronic components used to build such a node below 9 EUR (in volume)
