Technology, privacy and identity: a Hong Kong perspective
This article explores the concepts of privacy and identity in Hong Kong in relation to the law relating to data protection. It first considers the notions of privacy and identity in the light of Hong Kong's socioeconomic situation and recent postcolonial heritage. It then highlights the importance of identity management and considers the distinctions and overlaps between identity management and privacy protection. With this conceptual framework in mind, the article then considers the various laws in Hong Kong pertaining to data protection, with a focus on the aspects relating to identity management. It observes that while there is some legal protection in respect of the data relating to an individual's identity, there are other priorities which may take precedence in determining the extent of identity management under the legal system in Hong Kong. Finally, recommendations are made as to how to improve identity management within the context of data protection in Hong Kong
Claimed Co-ethnics and Kin-State Citizenship in Southeastern Europe
The paper introduces the often neglected concept of 'claimed co-ethnics' in the analysis of citizenship policies. It argues that this is an interstitial category that further complicates the triadic nexus between national minorities, nationalising states and kin-states. The 'claimed co-ethnics' are defined as people who are recognised by the citizenship (or ethnizenship) conferring state as belonging to its main ethnic group, although they themselves do not embrace that definition. In addition to bringing the issue of claimed co-ethnics into focus, the paper elucidates how citizenship policies can affect groups that challenge the exact fit between ethnicity and nation, showing how national governments through particular citizenship policies and categorisation practices engage in the construction of these groups. The paper shows that the triadic nexus framework, which has had a strong influence on citizenship and minorities scholarship, needs to be revised to include unidirectional relations between the elements of the triadic nexus. The paper is based on the comparison between the cases of ethnic Vlachs (in the context of Albania and Greece) and Bunjevci (in the context of Serbia and Croatia).European Commission - Seventh Framework Programme (FP7
Large algebras of singular functions vanishing on prescribed sets
In this paper, the non-vacuousness of the family of all nowhere analytic
infinitely differentiable functions on the real line vanishing on a prescribed
set Z is characterized in terms of Z. In this case, large algebraic structures
are found inside such family. The results obtained complete or extend a number
of previous ones by several authors.Comment: 11 page
Kyiv Theological Academy Professors at the Beginning of the 20th Century: At the Intersection of Cultures
This article attempts to reveal intercultural connections at the Kyiv Theological
Academy at the beginning of the 20th century by reconstructing the spiritual biographies of two theological academy professors: Archimandrite (later, Archbishop
of Berlin and Germany) Tykhon (Tymofii Liashchenko) and Petro Kudriavtsev. The
article demonstrates how different cultural traditions intersected and combined in
the spiritual experience of these figures. The author of the article argues that, as a
result of revolutionary events in 1917–1919, both Kyiv Theological Academy professors experienced transformations in personal cultural identity, and their spiritual biographies reveal a transition from Russian to Western European and a combination of both (Tykhon (Liashchenko) identities), and from Russian to Ukrainian ideological cultural orientation (Petro Kudriavtsev)
