Economic and financial market consequences of ageing populations

    Get PDF
The implications of ageing populations over the coming decades at the global level will be significant in terms of not only a slowdown in the growth rate of output and living standards but also with regard to fiscal and financial market trends. Given the backdrop of the downward trend in world-wide potential growth rates over the past number of decades, driven by falling rates of capital accumulation and a slowdown in productivity growth, the additional negative impact of relative declines in the growth rate of working age populations over the coming decades bodes ominously for future world-wide economic developments. The focus of the present paper is to quantify and analyse the nature, extent and geographical reach of the "real" economy and budgetary aspects of ageing populations as well as providing an initial assessment of the financial market implications of this phenomenon.population ageing, growth rate, productivity growth, working age population, Mc Morrow, Rger

The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) has gained wide consideration in academic field as well as in business world in recent years. Organizations are using CSR to develop competitive advantage and establish congenial relations with its stakeholders. Despite the popularity of CSR in the developed world, the potential benefits of CSR are less emphasized in the developing economies like Pakistan. This study examines the influence of CSR on development of corporate reputation and purchase intentions in the cellular industry of Pakistan. The data has been collected from the respondents regarding their perceptions about CSR actions and its influence on their reputation and customer purchase intentions. Structural equation modeling technique is used to analyze data and test hypotheses. The study found significantly positive influence of CSR on building corporate reputation of doing good and developing customer purchase intentions. The study provides useful recommendations for the policy makers in corporate world. It also contributes towards literature on CSR, Corporate reputation and customer behavior and offer direction for future researchers.Corporate social responsibility, corporate reputation, customer purchase intentions, developing economy, structural equation model, Pakistan

Content analysis of web sites from 2000 to 2004: a thematic meta-analysis

    Get PDF
The rise of the World Wide Web attracted concerns among social science scholars, especially those in the communication school who studied it by various methods like content analysis. However, the dynamic environment of the World Wide Web challenged this traditional research method, and, in turn, scholars tried to figure out valid solutions, which were summarized in the literature review section. After 2000, few studies focused on the content analysis of Web sites, while the World Wide Web developed rapidly and affected people??s everyday life. This study conducted a thematic meta-analysis to examine how researchers apply content analysis to the World Wide Web after 2000. A total of 39 studies that used content analysis to study Web sites were identified from three sources. Then data were collected and analyzed. This study found that, from 2000 to 2004, content analysis of the World Wide Web proliferated. The content analytical scholars had created new strategies to cope with challenges posed by the WWW. The suggestions made in this study forms some guidelines in the steps of content analysis research design, potentially aiding the future research of content analysis to Web sites in developing their own valid methods to study the rapid-paced WWW

A photometricity and extinction monitor at the Apache Point Observatory

An unsupervised software ``robot'' that automatically and robustly reduces and analyzes CCD observations of photometric standard stars is described. The robot measures extinction coefficients and other photometric parameters in real time and, more carefully, on the next day. It also reduces and analyzes data from an all-sky 10ÎĽm10 \mu m camera to detect clouds; photometric data taken during cloudy periods are automatically rejected. The robot reports its findings back to observers and data analysts via the World-Wide Web. It can be used to assess photometricity, and to build data on site conditions. The robot's automated and uniform site monitoring represents a minimum standard for any observing site with queue scheduling, a public data archive, or likely participation in any future National Virtual Observatory.Comment: accepted for publication in A

This report is the latest research report in a sustained effort throughout 2014 by the Pew Research Center Internet Project to mark the 25th anniversary of the creation of the World Wide Web by Sir Tim Berners-LeeThis current report is an analysis of opinions about the likely expansion of the Internet of Things (sometimes called the Cloud of Things), a catchall phrase for the array of devices, appliances, vehicles, wearable material, and sensor-laden parts of the environment that connect to each other and feed data back and forth. It covers the over 1,600 responses that were offered specifically about our question about where the Internet of Things would stand by the year 2025. The report is the next in a series of eight Pew Research and Elon University analyses to be issued this year in which experts will share their expectations about the future of such things as privacy, cybersecurity, and net neutrality. It includes some of the best and most provocative of the predictions survey respondents made when specifically asked to share their views about the evolution of embedded and wearable computing and the Internet of Things

Understanding the Web from an Economic Perspective: The Evolution of Business Models and the Web

    Get PDF
The advent of the World Wide Web is arguably amongst the most important changes that have occurred since the 1990s in the business landscape.  It has fueled the rise of new industries, supported the convergence and reshaping of existing ones and enabled the development of new business models.  During this time the web has evolved tremendously from a relatively static page-display tool to a massive network of user-generated content, collective intelligence, applications and hypermedia.  As technical standards continue to evolve, business models catch-up to the new capabilities.  New ways of creating value, distributing it and profiting from it emerge more rapidly than ever.  In this paper we explore how the World Wide Web and business models evolve and we identify avenues for future research in light of the web’s ever-evolving nature and its influence on business models

Brief Introduction on Working of Web Crawler

This Paper introduces a concept of web crawlers utilized as a part of web indexes. These days finding significant information among the billions of information resources on the World Wide Web is a difficult assignment because of developing popularity of the Web [16]. Search Engine starts a search by beginning a crawler to search the World Wide Web (WWW) for reports. Web crawler works orderedly to mine the information from the huge repository. The information on which the crawlers were working was composed in HTML labels, that information slacks the significance. It was a technique of content mapping [1]. Because of the current size of the Web and its dynamic nature, fabricating a productive search algorithm is essential. A huge number of web pages are persistently being included each day, and data is continually evolving. Search engines are utilized to separate important Information from the web. Web crawlers are the central part of internet searcher, is a PC program or software that peruses the World Wide Web in a deliberate, robotized way or in a systematic manner. It is a fundamental strategy for gathering information on, and staying in contact with the quickly expanding Internet. This survey briefly reviews the concepts of web crawler, web crawling methods used for searching, its architecture and its various types [5,6]. It also highlights avenues for future work [9]
