    Digital native identity development in virtual worlds

    In the transition from childhood to adolescence, teens are engaged in defining who they are and finding a place in the wide world creates insecurity. Digital natives are growing up as part of digital generation where technology is ubiquitous in a young person’s life. One online technology commonly used by digital natives are virtual worlds. Increasingly, they have come to rely on this digital media to help them navigate the challenges and issues they face in this period of life. This paper presents a research framework designed to provide a road map for the IS community in conducting research into this new and exciting area of virtual worlds and their impact on digital native identity development

    In early 2009, researchers in the English Department of the University of Amsterdam collaborated with researchers in the Drama Department, Deakin University, Australia on a project which brought English as a Second Language students from The Netherlands into the rehearsal studio of Australian students engaged in play-building on Australian themes. The project aims were multiple and interconnected. We extended a language acquisition framework established by the Dutch investigators in previous collaborations with the Universities of Venice and Southampton, and combined this with an investigation of ways to harness technology in order to teach Australian students to communicate with and about their art. The Dutch language students were prompted to develop art-related language literacy (description, interpretation, criticism), through live, video-streamed interaction with drama students in Australia at critical points in the development of a group-devised performance (conception, rehearsal, performance). The Australian student improved their capacity to articulate the aims and processes which drove their art-making by illuminating the art-making process for the Dutch students, and providing them with a real-life context for the use of extended vocabulary whilst making them partners in the process of shaping the work. All participants engaged in the common task of assessing the capacity of the art work produced to communicate meaning to a non-Australian audience.<br /

    The Relationship Between Digital Literacy Skills Instruction and Increased Skills Proficiency

    Though today\u27s students are considered digital natives, they lack the digital literacy skills needed to be competent and productive members of a digital society. The problem is a lack of evidence about the effectiveness of using content knowledge instruction and application experiences to develop students\u27 digital literacy skills. The purpose of this study was to understand the relationship between content knowledge, application experiences, and knowledge and skill development for digital literacy skills. Using Marzano\u27s art and science of teaching framework, the research questions were framed to explore the relationship between the content knowledge and application experience scores and mean growth of digital citizenship and research and information fluency skills as demonstrated on the Middle School TechLiteracy Assessment (MSTA). This correlational study used archival data from 130 eighth-grade students in Texas who were enrolled in a year-long technology applications elective class were used. Using a paired samples t test, the pre and post MSTA scores were analyzed. The Pearson correlation data analysis showed a statistically significant relationship between the content knowledge and assessment scores of digital citizenship and research and information fluency and no statistically significant difference between the means for digital citizenship and research and information fluency. Based on the study and data analysis results, it was determined that a customized professional development experience would help teachers develop capacity to integrate technology in their teaching practice. This capacity can improve the effectiveness of student digital literacy skills and can create positive social change in teaching and learning so students are better prepared to safely and efficiently live and interact in a digitally based society

    This case study examines the introduction of web-based apps to Japanese university students for skill-based English learning. The focus is on 32 students from the International Studies and Education departments at a private Japanese university. The course was an elective English course titled,“ Current Events English.” In class, activities consisted of analog speaking activities from the textbook. However, web-based applications were introduced to support class preparation, the midterm, and the final project. The Memrise app for vocab learning was optional for class preparation. Use of Google Classroom was required for accessing the initial class documents, and Cambridge Write & Improve was required or the final project. Data was collected from the applications as well as from student surveys. The findings provide insight into the efficacy of webbased applications for language learning in Japan. It also contributes to the body of knowledge regarding the reticence of Japanese university students to adopt digital modes of language learning.本事例研究では日本人大学生を対象にした英語学習のためのウエブアプリケーション(WA) の適用可能性を明らかにする。対象は国際教育学科と教育経営学科の学生32人である。時事英語(選択教科コース)では主に教科書からのアナログ・スピーキング・アクティビティーを行ったが,授業の事前準備,中間発表,およびファイナルプロジェクトために三つのWAを導入した。学生主体の 事前準備のためにMemriseの語彙学習アプリを使用し,授業のシラバスおよびプリントを手に入れるためにグーグル・クラスルームを必要とした。ファイナルプロジェクトのためにCambridge Write & Improveも必要とした。WAと学生アンケートからデータを収集して分析した。本研究の結果は,日本人学生が言語学習にWAを使用することに控えめであるにもかかわらず,WAが語学学習には有効であるという知識体系を得られた

    Toward Universal Broadband in Rural Alaska

    The TERRA-Southwest project is extending broadband service to 65 communities in the Bristol Bay, Bethel and Yukon-Kuskokwim regions. A stimulus project funded by a combination of grants and loans from the Rural Utilities Service (RUS), TERRA-Southwest has installed a middle-mile network using optical fiber and terrestrial microwave. Last-mile service will be through fixed wireless or interconnection with local telephone networks. The State of Alaska, through its designee Connect Alaska, also received federal stimulus funding from the National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA) for tasks that include support for an Alaska Broadband Task Force “to both formalize a strategic broadband plan for the state of Alaska and coordinate broadband activities across relevant agencies and organizations.” Thus, a study of the impact of the TERRA project in southwest Alaska is both relevant and timely. This first phase provides baseline data on current access to and use of ICTs and Internet connectivity in rural Alaska, and some insights about perceived benefits and potential barriers to adoption of broadband. It is also intended to provide guidance to the State Broadband Task Force in determining how the extension of broadband throughout the state could contribute to education, social services, and economic activities that would enhance Alaska’s future. Results of the research could also be used proactively to develop strategies to encourage broadband adoption, and to identify applications and support needed by users with limited ICT skills.Connect Alaska. Organizations, to a more or lesser extent, have adopted Digital technologies and as a result HR activities are affected, in terms of speed, accuracy, quality, cost innovation, flexibility. The aims of this theoretical study are to highlight HRM in the era of digitalization, emphasize the roles of HR managers in contemporary organizations and discuss the impact of technological changes on HR practices. In order to achieve our aims, we adopt a conceptual approach.
