    The Outer Reaches of Inner Peace: healing-centred peace emergence in North-Western India

    This thesis emerged from a collaborative peace research project based in Jammu, Kashmir and Ladakh (north-western India) in partnership with Yakjah Reconciliation and Development Network. In this thesis, I make a case for a healing-centred approach to conflict transformation and peace emergence that brings together inner (psycho-spiritual) and outer (socio-political) realms of peace. I inquire why and how intra- and inter-personal healing are imperative in contexts of protracted conflict and structural violence. This responds to a deficiency of wholistic inner-outer peace research, particularly in addressing the spiritual dimension of collective trauma and socio-political transformation. I argue that this deficiency stems in part from Eurocentric ontological and epistemological orientations, which give rise to fragmentary and compartmentalised understandings of peace, largely focusing on material, structural ‘outer’ dimensions of peace and neglecting psycho-spiritual dimensions. As I argue, this is a form of epistemic violence that arises from disembodied habits of modernity/coloniality. I therefore articulate healing-centred peacebuilding as an anti-colonial approach that demands new ways of seeing, being, knowing, and relating to self, other, earth, and sacred. In this project, we brought together 20 emerging youth peace leaders across identity fault lines for a series of immersive workshops centred around personal-political transformation and leadership development. Using a methodology I developed called Mapping Ritual Ecologies, I explored participants’ ‘stories of separation’ (trauma) and ‘stories of connection’ (healing) to understand and conceptually map each ‘ritual ecology’ as a wholistic space of intergroup contact and microcosm of the wider conflict context. I pose healing as an embodied relational process that moves from separation and fragmentation to wholeness and unification on individual and collective dimensions. This emerged in a fractal ‘healing spiral’ of embodied inside-out transformation that rippled outward in self-similar patterns at increasing scales of each ritual ecology and through participants’ relational spheres of influence. I reveal these relational patterns, arguing that outer socio-political structures emerge from collective and individual inner conditions, and conversely, inner experience and relational dynamics are shaped by outer socio-political structures and systems in dynamic, co-emergent processes

    Exploring the composition of restorative environments conducive to post traumatic report and recovery processes in young women : towards an inner city support centre for young women in Durban.

University of KwaZulu-Natal, Durban 2015.This dissertation argues that research in Restorative Environments should begin to analyse situations in which restoration is actively promoted to treat specific conditions. The trauma of rape, sexual assault and abuse has been explored in this dissertation as a negative precursor, which requires physical, psychological, mental, and social restoration. By applying an understanding of this trauma, and its inherent constructs, the existing frameworks of Stress Recovery Theory (SRT) and Attention Restoration Theory (ART) have been redefined to meet the needs of the victims. Using a feminist standpoint, and a constructivist-grounded methodology, an analysis of the existing literature, several precedent studies, architectural case studies, and a series of in-depth interviews with victims advocates from a Non Profit and Non Government organisation based at several local Police Stations, the Department of Social Development Offices, and the Thuthuzela Care Centres, revealed several themes which formed the overall framework of the research argument, and its subsequent conclusions. (1) Refuge, in the form of a sense of safety and retreat are essential to disclosure. The integration of Perception Theory, particularly in terms of multi- sensory design, can create a sense of warmth and refuge in the built form. (2) Reflection, in terms of instoration, and cognitive and aesthetic distraction, can facilitate victim self-regulation. The use of Biophilic design principles, and particularly fractals, can promote reflection within the built form. (3) Reintegration, through a sense of belonging and normality promotes longer term recovery. The incorporation of the principles of Sense of Place can initiate longer term reintegration and restoration in the built form. Furthermore, through the fieldwork component of the research, this dissertation has concluded that although the functional medico-legal aspects of hospital crisis care environments and police report environments in Durban are reported to be generally well considered, an understanding of these experiential themes of Refuge, Reflect and Reintegrate, are not typically incorporated into these environments. Additionally, as a means to support the existing environments for report and recovery in Durban, there are several Non Profit and Non Government Organisations who have set up their own support facilities to meet the various longer term legal, psychological and medical needs of the victims. Unfortunately, their lack of infrastructure, funding and environmental connection to formal first response environments, such as hospitals and police stations, have resulted in a disconnect between points of first disclosure and continued recovery. This dissertation has concluded that this impedes the recovery of the victims and arguably reduces the number of cases reported. In the context of the ongoing stigma around cases of rape, sexual assault and abuse, the design of positive environments for tackling the layers of toxicity experienced by the victims- from the initial report stage, through the healing phases, and into the final stage of re-integration into society - is more important than ever. And as such, more research, and practical measures should be taken to understand how a single cohesive report and recovery environment can meet the many perceptions, experiences and needs of the victims - whether immediate or long term, physical or psychological, individual or group

    Homeplace of Hands: Fractal Performativity of Vulnerable Resistance

    Homeplace of Hands: Fractal Performativity of Vulnerable Resistance is a feminist autoethnography of possibility that puts on display two new concepts I’ve named fractal performativity and vulnerable resistance. Fractal performativity as a way of seeing is an integrative performance methodology that utilizes fractal geometry and performative autoethnography and brings together performance studies, feminist theory, multiethnic literature, personal story and poetry to communicate vulnerable resistance as a strategy for social transformation and selfhood. Vulnerable resistance as a way of being embodies a praxis of homeplace enacted through five modes I’ve identified as nurturance, sustenance, maintenance, performance, and alliance, expressed through the daily work of the hand as a metaphor, tool, and fractal. Deploying fractal performativity as an integrative method and conceptual framework, I design the fractal hand as a template that embodies intersecting identities and holds my stories as I cultivate homeplace and enact vulnerable resistance through the five modes. For scholar-artist- activists working on the margins, this integrative strategy offers hope to keep coming back day after day, and a template for cultivating homeplace of vulnerable resistance

    Hip osteoarthritis: A novel network analysis of subchondral trabecular bone structures

    Hip osteoarthritis (HOA) is a degenerative joint disease that leads to the progressive destruction of subchondral bone and cartilage at the hip joint. Development of effective treatments for HOA remains an open problem, primarily due to the lack of knowledge of its pathogenesis and a typically late-stage diagnosis.We describe a novel network analysis methodology for microcomputed tomography (micro-CT) images of human trabecular bone.We explored differences between the trabecular bone microstructure of femoral heads with and without HOA. Large-scale automated extraction of the network formed by trabecular bone revealed significant network properties not previously reported for bone. Profound differences were discovered, particularly in the proximal third of the femoral head, where HOA networks demonstrated elevated numbers of edges, vertices, and graph components. When further differentiating healthy joint and HOA networks, the latter showed fewer small-world network properties, due to decreased clustering coefficient and increased characteristic path length. Furthermore,we found that HOA networks had reduced length of edges, indicating the formation of compressed trabecular structures. In order to assess our network approach,we developed a deep learningmodel for classifying HOA and control cases, and we fed it with two separate inputs: (i) micro-CT images of the trabecular bone, and (ii) the network extracted from them. The model with plain micro-CT images achieves 74.6% overall accuracy while the trained model with extracted networks attains 96.5% accuracy. We anticipate our findings to be a starting point for a novel description of bone microstructure in HOA, by considering the phenomenon from a graph theory viewpoint.Mohsen Dorraki, Dzenita Muratovic, Anahita Fouladzadeh, Johan W.     The emergence of language as a function of brain-hemispheric feedback

    This text posits the emergence of language as a function of brain-hemispheric feedback, where “emergence” refers to the generation of complex patterns from relatively simple interactions, “language” refers to an abstraction-based and representational-recombinatorial-recursive mapping-signaling system, “function” refers to an input-output relationship described by fractal algorithms, “brain-hemispheric” refers to complementary (approach-abstraction / avoidance-gestalt) cognitive modules, and “feedback” refers to self-regulation driven by neural inhibition and recruitment. The origin of language marks the dawn of human self-awareness and culture, and is thus a matter of fundamental and cross-disciplinary interest. This text is a synthesized research essay that constructs its argument by drawing diverse scholarly voices into a critical, cross-disciplinary intertextual narrative. While it does not report any original empirical findings, it harnesses those made by others to offer a tentative, partial solution—one that can later be altered and expanded—to a problem that has occupied thinkers for centuries. The research contained within this text is preceded by an introductory Section 1 that contextualizes the problem of the origin of language. Section 2 details the potential of evolutionary theory for addressing the problem, and the reasons for the century-long failure of linguistics to take advantage of that potential. Section 3 reviews the history of the discovery of brain lateralization, as well as its behavioral and structural characteristics. Section 4 discusses evolutionary evidence and mechanisms in terms of increasing adaptive complexity and intelligence, in general, and tool use, in particular. Section 5 combines chaos theory, brain science, and semiotics to propose that, after the neotenic acquisition of contingency-based abstraction, language emerged as a feedback interaction between the left-hemisphere abstract word and the right-hemisphere gestalt image. I conclude that the model proposed here might be a valuable tool for understanding, organizing, and relating data and ideas concerning human evolution, language, culture, and psychology. I recommend, of course, that I present this text to the scholarly community for criticism, and that I continue to gather and collate relevant data and ideas, in order to prepare its next iteration

    New Foundation in the Sciences: Physics without sweeping infinities under the rug

    It is widely known among the Frontiers of physics, that “sweeping under the rug” practice has been quite the norm rather than exception. In other words, the leading paradigms have strong tendency to be hailed as the only game in town. For example, renormalization group theory was hailed as cure in order to solve infinity problem in QED theory. For instance, a quote from Richard Feynman goes as follows: “What the three Nobel Prize winners did, in the words of Feynman, was to get rid of the infinities in the calculations. The infinities are still there, but now they can be skirted around . . . We have designed a method for sweeping them under the rug. [1] And Paul Dirac himself also wrote with similar tune: “Hence most physicists are very satisfied with the situation. They say: Quantum electrodynamics is a good theory, and we do not have to worry about it any more. I must say that I am very dissatisfied with the situation, because this so-called good theory does involve neglecting infinities which appear in its equations, neglecting them in an arbitrary way. This is just not sensible mathematics. Sensible mathematics involves neglecting a quantity when it turns out to be small—not neglecting it just because it is infinitely great and you do not want it!”[2] Similarly, dark matter and dark energy were elevated as plausible way to solve the crisis in prevalent Big Bang cosmology. That is why we choose a theme here: New Foundations in the Sciences, in order to emphasize the necessity to introduce a new set of approaches in the Sciences, be it Physics, Cosmology, Consciousness etc

    Music Listening as Therapy

    Music is a universal phenomenon and is a real, physical thing. It is processed in neural circuits that overlap with language circuits, and it exerts cognitive, emotional, and physiological effects on humans. Many of those effects are therapeutic, such as reduced symptoms of physical and mental ailments. Music is the result of the elements rhythm, melody, harmony, timbre, dynamics, and form. Rhythm is the focus of pop music, and melody is the focus of classical music. The mind perceives and organizes music in learned, consistent ways in order to generate predictions and extract meaning. There are perceptual laws and information processing limitations to this process. Predictions are based in schematic and veridical approaches, which give rise to expectations. Frustrated expectations result in an effective response. Music only has meaning unto itself and the music listener ascribes any extra-musical meaning. This includes any emotional meaning. The unfolding of a song is much like how Gestalt Therapy theory conceptualizes human experience. Mindfulness offers a clear definition of how one can frame and approach experience to support health and well-being.     Characterisation of disuse-related osteoporosis in an animal model of spinal cord injury

    Injury to the spinal cord can result in paralysis below the level of injury. A secondary complication of the removal of muscle-driven bone stimulation is the development of rapid osteoporosis in the bones of the paralysed limbs. The severe deterioration of both bone quantity and quality means that spinal cord injury (SCI) patients are at a significantly higher risk of fragility fractures in the lower extremities than the able-bodied population.;These fractures occur most commonly around the knee (distal femur and proximal tibia). This thesis presents a characterisation of the time-course effects a complete SCI has on the fracture-prone distal femur in a rat model. The aims are to characterise the quality and distribution of bone and to provide a uniquely detailed description of its response to SCI at various time points post-injury.;Bone quality is assessed using i) ex vivo micro-Computed Tomography (μCT) for global and site-specific analysis of both trabecular and cortical bone morphometry and densitometry, and ii) three-point bending and torsional mechanical testing to provide whole-bone structural and material level properties.;Evidence is presented that SCI-induced osteoporosis is site-specific within the same appendicular bone. A rapid and severe deterioration of metaphyseal trabecular bone was observed, after just 2 weeks trabecular volume fraction (BV/TV) had decreased by 59% compared to age-matched sham-operated controls. This resulted in a compromised structure composed of on average 53% fewer and 15% thinner trabeculae compared to control.;At later time points post-SCI there were no further significant reductions in metaphyseal BV/TV, although significant microstructural changes did occur. On the other hand, the more distally located epiphyseal trabecular bone was structurally more resistant to SCI-induced osteoporosis. There was a 23% decrease in BV/TV at 2 weeks post-SCI compared to control, characterised by a 15% decrease in trabecular thickness, thus unlike metaphyseal trabecular structures, the epiphyseal structure's connectivity was maintained. At later time points post-SCI there was a growth-related increase in epiphyseal BV/TV.;Rapid changes to cortical bone were also seen, with distal-metaphyseal regions experiencing the most severe decrease in cortical area at 2 weeks post-SCI compared to control. The varying degrees of change in the amount of both trabecular and cortical bone appears concomitant with each region's bone surface to volume ratio. Analysis of more chronic time points post-SCI (6, 10 and 16 weeks) highlights that caution must be exercised when interpreting results from rodent studies.;The analysis performed here indicates that SCI-induced bone changes are a combination of bone loss and suppressed bone growth. No difference in cortical tissue mineral density was observed between SCI and control groups at any time-points assessed, indicating that the decreases in whole-bone mechanical properties observed due to SCI were primarily a result of changes to the spatial distribution of bone.;Cumulatively, this thesis illustrates that SCI-induced osteoporosis has detrimentally affected the spatial distribution of both trabecular and cortical bone in site-specific ways, but the bone material itself does not appear affected.Injury to the spinal cord can result in paralysis below the level of injury.     Communicating the Unspeakable: Linguistic Phenomena in the Psychedelic Sphere

    Psychedelics can enable a broad and paradoxical spectrum of linguistic phenomena from the unspeakability of mystical experience to the eloquence of the songs of the shaman or curandera. Interior dialogues with the Other, whether framed as the voice of the Logos, an alien download, or communion with ancestors and spirits, are relatively common. Sentient visual languages are encountered, their forms unrelated to the representation of speech in natural language writing systems. This thesis constructs a theoretical model of linguistic phenomena encountered in the psychedelic sphere for the field of altered states of consciousness research (ASCR). The model is developed from a neurophenomenological perspective, especially the work of Francisco Varela, and Michael Winkelman’s work in shamanistic ASC, which in turn builds on the biogenetic structuralism of Charles Laughlin, John McManus, and Eugene d’Aquili. Neurophenomenology relates the physical and functional organization of the brain to the subjective reports of lived experience in altered states as mutually informative, without reducing consciousness to one or the other. Consciousness is seen as a dynamic multistate process of the recursive interaction of biology and culture, thereby navigating the traditional dichotomies of objective/subjective, body/mind, and inner/outer realities that problematically characterize much of the discourse in consciousness studies. The theoretical work of Renaissance scholar Stephen Farmer on the evolution of syncretic and correlative systems and their relation to neurobiological structures provides a further framework for the exegesis of the descriptions of linguistic phenomena in first-person texts of long-term psychedelic selfexploration. Since the classification of most psychedelics as Schedule I drugs, legal research came to a halt; self-experimentation as research did not. Scientists such as Timothy Leary and John Lilly became outlaw scientists, a social aspect of the “unspeakability” of these experiences. Academic ASCR has largely side-stepped examination of the extensive literature of psychedelic selfexploration. This thesis examines aspects of both form and content from these works, focusing on those that treat linguistic phenomena, and asking what these linguistic experiences can tell us about how the psychedelic landscape is constructed, how it can be navigated, interpreted, and communicated within its own experiential field, and communicated about to make the data accessible to inter-subjective comparison and validation. The methodological core of this practice-based research is a technoetic practice as defined by artist and theoretician Roy Ascott: the exploration of consciousness through interactive, artistic, and psychoactive technologies. The iterative process of psychedelic self-exploration and creation of interactive software defines my own technoetic practice and is the means by which I examine my states of consciousness employing the multidimensional visual language Glide

    Authentic alignment : toward an Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA) informed model of the learning environment in health professions education

    It is well established that the goals of education can only be achieved through the constructive alignment of instruction, learning and assessment. There is a gap in research interpreting the lived experiences of stakeholders within the UK learning environment toward understanding the real impact – authenticity – of curricular alignment. This investigation uses a critical realist framework to explore the emergent quality of authenticity as a function of alignment.This project deals broadly with alignment of anatomy pedagogy within UK undergraduate medical education. The thread of alignment is woven through four aims: 1) to understand the alignment of anatomy within the medical curriculum via the relationships of its stakeholders; 2) to explore the apparent complexity of the learning environment (LE); 3) to generate a critical evaluation of the methodology, Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis as an approach appropriate for realist research in the complex fields of medical and health professions education; 4) to propose a functional, authentic model of the learning environment.Findings indicate that the complexity and uncertainty inherent in the LE can be reflected in spatiotemporal models. Findings meet the thesis aims, suggesting: 1) the alignment of anatomy within the medical curriculum is complex and forms a multiplicity of perspectives; 2) this complexity is ripe for phenomenological exploration; 3) IPA is particularly suitable for realist research exploring complexity in HPE; 4) Authentic Alignment theory offers a spatiotemporal model of the complex HPE learning environment:the T-icosa
