    Defining interfaces between hardware and software: Quality and performance

    One of the most important interfaces in a computer system is the interface between hardware and software. This interface is the contract between the hardware designer and the programmer that defines the functional behaviour of the hardware. This thesis examines two critical aspects of defining the hardware-software interface: quality and performance. The first aspect is creating a high quality specification of the interface as conventionally defined in an instruction set architecture. The majority of this thesis is concerned with creating a specification that covers the full scope of the interface; that is applicable to all current implementations of the architecture; and that can be trusted to accurately describe the behaviour of implementations of the architecture. We describe the development of a formal specification of the two major types of Arm processors: A-class (for mobile devices such as phones and tablets) and M-class (for micro-controllers). These specifications are unparalleled in their scope, applicability and trustworthiness. This thesis identifies and illustrates what we consider the key ingredient in achieving this goal: creating a specification that is used by many different user groups. Supporting many different groups leads to improved quality as each group finds different problems in the specification; and, by providing value to each different group, it helps justify the considerable effort required to create a high quality specification of a major processor architecture. The work described in this thesis led to a step change in Arm's ability to use formal verification techniques to detect errors in their processors; enabled extensive testing of the specification against Arm's official architecture conformance suite; improved the quality of Arm's architecture conformance suite based on measuring the architectural coverage of the tests; supported earlier, faster development of architecture extensions by enabling animation of changes as they are being made; and enabled early detection of problems created from architecture extensions by performing formal validation of the specification against semi-structured natural language specifications. As far as we are aware, no other mainstream processor architecture has this capability. The formal specifications are included in Arm's publicly released architecture reference manuals and the A-class specification is also released in machine-readable form. The second aspect is creating a high performance interface by defining the hardware-software interface of a software-defined radio subsystem using a programming language. That is, an interface that allows software to exploit the potential performance of the underlying hardware. While the hardware-software interface is normally defined in terms of machine code, peripheral control registers and memory maps, we define it using a programming language instead. This higher level interface provides the opportunity for compilers to hide some of the low-level differences between different systems from the programmer: a potentially very efficient way of providing a stable, portable interface without having to add hardware to provide portability between different hardware platforms. We describe the design and implementation of a set of extensions to the C programming language to support programming high performance, energy efficient, software defined radio systems. The language extensions enable the programmer to exploit the pipeline parallelism typically present in digital signal processing applications and to make efficient use of the asymmetric multiprocessor systems designed to support such applications. The extensions consist primarily of annotations that can be checked for consistency and that support annotation inference in order to reduce the number of annotations required. Reducing the number of annotations does not just save programmer effort, it also improves portability by reducing the number of annotations that need to be changed when porting an application from one platform to another. This work formed part of a project that developed a high-performance, energy-efficient, software defined radio capable of implementing the physical layers of the 4G cellphone standard (LTE), 802.11a WiFi and Digital Video Broadcast (DVB) with a power and silicon area budget that was competitive with a conventional custom ASIC solution. The author also discusses evaluation and validation techniques for embedded systems and provides an overview of techniques for mapping applications to execution platforms, including multi-core platforms. One task of the DSTWG is to develop new electronic technologies that will meet next generation electronic data system needs.     Knowledge-based programs (KBPs) are a formalism for directly relating agents' knowledge and behaviour in a way that has proven useful for specifying distributed systems. Here we present a scheme for compiling KBPs to executable automata in finite environments with a proof of correctness in Isabelle/HOL. We use Arrows, a functional programming abstraction, to structure a prototype domain-specific synchronous language embedded in Haskell. By adapting our compilation scheme to use symbolic representations we can apply it to several examples of reasonable size

    Design methodology for embedded computer vision systems

    Computer vision has emerged as one of the most popular domains of embedded appli¬cations. Though various new powerful embedded platforms to support such applica¬tions have emerged in recent years, there is a distinct lack of efficient domain-specific synthesis techniques for optimized implementation of such systems. In this thesis, four different aspects that contribute to efficient design and synthesis of such systems are explored: (1) Graph Transformations: Dataflow modeling is widely used in digital signal processing (DSP) systems. However, support for dynamic behavior in such systems exists mainly at the modeling level and there is a lack of optimized synthesis tech¬niques for these models. New transformation techniques for efficient system-on-chip (SoC) design methods are proposed and implemented for cyclo-static dataflow and its parameterized version (parameterized cyclo-static dataflow) -- two powerful models that allow dynamic reconfigurability and phased behavior in DSP systems. (2) Design Space Exploration: The broad range of target platforms along with the complexity of applications provides a vast design space, calling for efficient tools to explore this space and produce effective design choices. A novel architectural level design methodology based on a formalism called multirate synchronization graphs is presented along with methods for performance evaluation. (3) Multiprocessor Communication Interface: Efficient code synthesis for emerg¬ing new parallel architectures is an important and sparsely-explored problem. A widely-encountered problem in this regard is efficient communication between pro¬cessors running different sub-systems. A widely used tool in the domain of general-purpose multiprocessor clusters is MPI (Message Passing Interface). However, this does not scale well for embedded DSP systems. A new, powerful and highly optimized communication interface for multiprocessor signal processing systems is presented in this work that is based on the integration of relevant properties of MPI with dataflow semantics. (4) Parameterized Design Framework for Particle Filters: Particle filter systems constitute an important class of applications used in a wide number of fields. An effi¬cient design and implementation framework for such systems has been implemented based on the observation that a large number of such applications exhibit similar prop¬erties. The key properties of such applications are identified and parameterized appro¬priately to realize different systems that represent useful trade-off points in the space of possible implementations

    Runtime Verification of Analog and Mixed Signal Designs

    Analog and mixed signal (AMS) circuits play an important role in system on chip designs. They pose, however, many challenges in the verification of the overall system due to their complex behaviors and expensive consumption of simulation resources. Besides functionality, AMS systems also suffer from stochastic processes such as random noise which exhibits statistical properties. Among many developed verification techniques, runtime verification has been shown to be effective by experimenting finite executions instead of going through the whole state space. In this thesis, we propose a methodology for the verification of AMS designs using functional and statistical runtime verification. Functional runtime verification is used to check the functional behavior of the AMS design. A system of recurrence equation (SRE) is used to model the AMS design and construct a functional property monitor. This functional runtime verification is carried out in an online fashion. Statistical runtime verification is used to verify the statistical properties of the AMS design. Hypothesis test, which is a method to make statistical decisions about rejecting or accepting some statement about the information of a sample, is used to verify the statistical properties. We use Monte Carlo simulation for the hypothesis test and for evaluating its performance. The proposed methodology is applied to a phase lock loop based frequency synthesizer where several functional properties and stochastic noise properties are verified
