Multiple Case Comparison of the In-Transit Visibility Business Process

    Get PDF
Over the past decade, the Department of Defense has developed an In-transit Visibility capability. Despite significant funding and research in developing this capability, the initial deployment in support of Operation ENDURING FREEDOM (OEF) in 2001 highlighted an ongoing problem to achieve ITV within the U.S. Air Force. Initial results from Headquarters USAF initiated studies point to a need to focus on business processes related ITV management. This research employed a multiple case study design embedded in a functional benchmarking process to solicit ITV management best practices from leaders in the civilian logistics industry and to identify gaps between their practices and those of the Air Force. The data collection method used electronic mail as a portal to conducting subject matter expert interviews. Using the data collected from the benchmarking partners, the research recognized 19 best practices and compared the civilian and military environments in 41 areas. This evaluation highlighted gaps between practices used in the civilian industry and those used by the Air Force. These gaps served as areas of opportunity in which the Air Force can evaluate alternative management practices in an effort to improve the ITV process. Using these gaps as a foundation, the research proposed fourteen recommendations for action

Contemporary mormon literature: Phyllis Barber's writing

Mormonism\u27s Last Colonizer: The Life and Times of William H. Smart

    Get PDF
By the early twentieth century, the era of organized Mormon colonization of the West from a base in Salt Lake City was all but over. One significant region of Utah had not been colonized because it remained in Native American hands--the Uinta Basin, site of a reservation for the Northern Utes. When the federal government decided to open the reservation to white settlement, William H. Smart--a nineteenth-century Mormon traditionalist living in the twentieth century, a polygamist in an era when it was banned, a fervently moral stake president who as a youth had struggled mightily with his own sense of sinfulness, and an entrepreneurial businessman with theocratic, communal instincts--set out to ensure that the Uinta Basin also would be part of the Mormon kingdom. Included with the biography is a searchable CD containing William H. Smart\u27s extensive journals, a monumental personal record of Mormondom and its transitional period from nineteenth-century cultural isolation into twentieth-century national integration.https://digitalcommons.usu.edu/usupress_pubs/1044/thumbnail.jp

A study of the administration of emergency medical services in San Joaquin County : analysis and recommendations

    Get PDF
This study examines the administration of emergency medical services (E.M.s.) in San Joaquin County. The analysis proposes to determine whether any serious inadequacies exist with the system as it is administered presently. There were three major sources for this research. The legislations on E.M.S. (federal, state and local), and the writer\u27s personal working participation (as a staff member of the San Joaquin Comprehensive Health Planning Association) in the development of plans in this substantive area, and as a participant observant at the San Joaquin County General Hospital, (with the Social Services Department). The rather limited bibliography on the subject Has consulted and adaptations are made to make this a scholarly exercise. However, because of the nature of the subject, this is an attempt to present a qualitative rather than a quantitative analysis. The discussion is divided in five parts. The first chapter lays out the basic concepts of an Emergency Medical Services System and discusses the most relevant aspects of the federal legislation on E.M.S. and its ramifications on state and local policies. In the second chapter, a policy model is developed, against which the existing system is later tested. This model is based mostly on state (of California) specifications and on the Federal Emergency Medical Service System Act of 1973. The third chapter describes the county from a geographic and socio-economic perspective, and points out emergency medical needs in the county. Chapter four evaluates E.M.S. resources and their use in San Joaquin County, measuring adequacy against the ideal system developed in Chapter two, and identifies problems and states recommendations in each area evaluated. Chapter five discusses methods for future evaluation of the System. The thesis concludes with the writer\u27s personal observations about the system in the county

The Mormons in Nazi Germany: History and Memory

This dissertation studies a small American religious group that survived unscathed during the Third Reich. Some fifteen thousand members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, the Mormons, lived under National Socialism. Unlike persecuted Jews and Jehovah's Witnesses, and other small American-based sects that suffered severe restrictions, the Mormons worshiped freely under Hitler's regime. They survived by stressing congruence between church doctrine and Nazi dogma. Mormons emphasized their interest in genealogical research and sports, sent their husbands into the Wehrmacht and their sons into the Hitler Youth, and prayed for a Nazi victory in wartime. Mormon leaders purged all Jewish references from hymnals, lesson plans and liturgical practices, and shunned their few Jewish converts. They resurrected a doctrinal edict that required deference to civil authority, which the Mormons had not always obeyed. Some Mormons imagined fanciful connections with Nazism, to the point that a few believed Hitler admired their church, copied its welfare program, and organized the Nazi party along Mormon lines. This dissertation builds upon Christine Elizabeth King's theory of a common Weltanschauung between Mormons and Nazis, and Steven Carter's description of the Mormons' "accommodation" with National Socialism. Instead of a passive approach, however, the Mormons pursued aggressive and shameless "ingratiation" with the Nazi state. This work also examines memory. Mormons later tried to forget their pandering to the Nazis, especially when large numbers of Germans immigrated to Utah in the post-war period. When the story of a martyred Mormon resister, Helmuth Hubener, emerged in the 1970s, church officials interfered with the research of scholars at Brigham Young University. They feared that Hubener's example would incite Mormon youth to rebel against dictators abroad, hurt the church's relations with communist East Germany, and would offend recent German Mormon immigrants in Utah. A few Mormons shunned and harassed Hubener's surviving coconspirators. In recent years, Hubener?excommunicated for rebellion against the Nazis but later restored to full church membership?has been rehabilitated as a recognized hero of Mormonism. A new collective memory has been forged, one of wartime courage and suffering, while the inconvenient past is being conveniently discarded
