More than a Match: The Role of Football in Britain’s Deaf Community

    Get PDF
The University of Central Lancashire has undertaken a major research project into the role of football within the deaf community in Britain. As well as reconstructing the long history of deaf involvement in football for the first time, the project has also focused on the way in which football has provided deaf people with a means of developing and maintaining social contacts within the community, and of expressing the community’s cultural values. This article will draw on primary data gathered from interviews conducted with people involved in deaf football in a variety of capacities. During the course of these interviews, a number of themes and issues emerged relating to the values and benefits those involved with deaf football place on the game, and it is these which are explored here

Prediction with expert advice for the Brier game

We show that the Brier game of prediction is mixable and find the optimal learning rate and substitution function for it. The resulting prediction algorithm is applied to predict results of football and tennis matches. The theoretical performance guarantee turns out to be rather tight on these data sets, especially in the case of the more extensive tennis data.Comment: 34 pages, 22 figures, 2 tables. Some historians suggest that despite markings on the calendar the Twentieth Century did not begin in America, culturally speaking, until after the 1917-1918 war. Until that time, they assert, Americans thought and behaved as they had in a prior and more innocent age. After 1918 Americans adopted the more frenetic life-style of what has become known as the Roaring Twenties, the Jazz Age, or the Mad Decade, a period which ended with the onset of the Great Depression of the 1930s. The era saw the emergence of such athletic titans as Babe Ruth, Jack Dempsey, Harold Red Grange, Bobby Jones, Bill Tilden, and others. An indication of the new place of women during the period was the fame won by Gertrude Ederle in swimming, Helen Wills Moody in tennis, and Glenna Collett in golf. Football diplomacy redux: the 2015 Asian Cup and Australia's engagement with Asia

    Get PDF
n 2015 Australia will host the Asian Football Confederation’s Asian Cup, bringing together the top 16 national teams in Asia.  The tournament will provide opportunities for government, business and community groups to strengthen their engagement with Asia. In order to understand and leverage those opportunities, the Lowy Institute and the Asian Cup Local Organising Committee held a day-long conference on 23 November 2012, bringing together senior government, business, tourism, sport and community representatives. Drawing on the ideas generated at the conference, this report outlines how key stakeholders can use the Asian Cup to strengthen Australia’s ties with Asia.Key findings:To leverage the engagement and networking opportunities of the Asian Cup, key stakeholders should form of a Football Asia Council to pool scarce resources, build synergies and avoid duplication The Council should oversee the creation of a digital hub as a one-stop-shop for information about both the Asian Cup and the various football diplomacy networking opportunities around it, along with an associated social media platform Government and FFA should provided targeted support to those groups already planning football diplomacy activities around the Asian Cup
