Mobile heritage practices. Implications for scholarly research, user experience design, and evaluation methods using mobile apps.
Mobile heritage apps have become one of the most popular means for audience
engagement and curation of museum collections and heritage contexts. This
raises practical and ethical questions for both researchers and practitioners, such
as: what kind of audience engagement can be built using mobile apps? what are
the current approaches? how can audience engagement with these experience
be evaluated? how can those experiences be made more resilient, and in turn
sustainable? In this thesis I explore experience design scholarships together with
personal professional insights to analyse digital heritage practices with a view to
accelerating thinking about and critique of mobile apps in particular. As a result,
the chapters that follow here look at the evolution of digital heritage practices,
examining the cultural, societal, and technological contexts in which mobile
heritage apps are developed by the creative media industry, the academic
institutions, and how these forces are shaping the user experience design
methods. Drawing from studies in digital (critical) heritage, Human-Computer
Interaction (HCI), and design thinking, this thesis provides a critical analysis of
the development and use of mobile practices for the heritage. Furthermore,
through an empirical and embedded approach to research, the thesis also
presents auto-ethnographic case studies in order to show evidence that mobile
experiences conceptualised by more organic design approaches, can result in
more resilient and sustainable heritage practices. By doing so, this thesis
encourages a renewed understanding of the pivotal role of these practices in the
broader sociocultural, political and environmental changes.AHRC REAC
A Survey on Forensics and Compliance Auditing for Critical Infrastructure Protection
The broadening dependency and reliance that modern societies have on essential services
provided by Critical Infrastructures is increasing the relevance of their trustworthiness. However, Critical
Infrastructures are attractive targets for cyberattacks, due to the potential for considerable impact, not just
at the economic level but also in terms of physical damage and even loss of human life. Complementing
traditional security mechanisms, forensics and compliance audit processes play an important role in ensuring
Critical Infrastructure trustworthiness. Compliance auditing contributes to checking if security measures are
in place and compliant with standards and internal policies. Forensics assist the investigation of past security
incidents. Since these two areas significantly overlap, in terms of data sources, tools and techniques, they can
be merged into unified Forensics and Compliance Auditing (FCA) frameworks. In this paper, we survey the
latest developments, methodologies, challenges, and solutions addressing forensics and compliance auditing
in the scope of Critical Infrastructure Protection. This survey focuses on relevant contributions, capable of
tackling the requirements imposed by massively distributed and complex Industrial Automation and Control
Systems, in terms of handling large volumes of heterogeneous data (that can be noisy, ambiguous, and
redundant) for analytic purposes, with adequate performance and reliability. The achieved results produced
a taxonomy in the field of FCA whose key categories denote the relevant topics in the literature. Also, the
collected knowledge resulted in the establishment of a reference FCA architecture, proposed as a generic
template for a converged platform. These results are intended to guide future research on forensics and

Legacy news organisations, publishers of newspapers, have moved to the internet. In the online news environment, however, they are no longer the exclusive suppliers of news. New digital intermediaries have emerged, search engines and news aggregators in particular. They select and display links and fragments of press publishers’ content as a part of their services, without seeking the news organisations’ prior consent. To shield themselves from exploitation by digital intermediaries, press publishers have begun to seek legal protection, and called for the introduction of a new right under the umbrella of copyright and related rights. Following these calls, the press publishers’ right was introduced into the EU copyright framework by the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market in 2019
Examining systemic and dispositional factors impacting historically disenfranchised schools across North Carolina
This mixed method sequential explanatory study provided analysis of North Carolina (NC) school leaders’ dispositions in eliminating opportunity gaps, outlined in NC’s strategic plan. The study’s quantitative phase used descriptive and correlation analysis of eight Likert subscales around four tenets of transformative leadership (Shields, 2011) and aspects of critical race theory (Bell, 1992; Ladson-Billings, 1998; Ladson-Billings & Tate, 2006) to understand systemic inequities and leadership attitudes.
The qualitative phase comprised three analyses of education leadership dispositions and systemic factors in NC schools. The first analysis of State Board of Education meeting minutes from 2018–2023 quantified and analyzed utterances of racism and critical race, outlined the sociopolitical context of such utterances, and identified systemic patterns and state leader dispositions. The second analysis of five interviews of K–12 graduates identified persistent and systemic factors influencing NC education 3 decades after Brown v. Board of Education (1954) and within the context of Leandro v. State of NC (1997), where the NC Supreme Court recognized the state constitutional right for every student to access a “sound basic education.” The final qualitative analysis consisted of five interviews of current NC public school system leaders, for personal narratives of the state of NC schools compared to patterns from lived experiences of NC K–12 graduates.
The study’s findings suggested NC school and state education leaders experience a racialized dichotomy between willingness for change (equity intentions) and execution of transformative action (practice). Although leaders at the board and school levels recognize the need for inclusivity and equity, a struggle to transcend systemic challenges, especially rooted in racial biases and power dynamics is evident. This study may identify leadership qualities needed for change in NC to address systemic inequities for improving educational access and inform policy to uphold all students’ constitutional right to a sound, basic education

VNHSGE: VietNamese High School Graduation Examination Dataset for Large Language Models
The VNHSGE (VietNamese High School Graduation Examination) dataset, developed
exclusively for evaluating large language models (LLMs), is introduced in this
article. The dataset, which covers nine subjects, was generated from the
Vietnamese National High School Graduation Examination and comparable tests.
300 literary essays have been included, and there are over 19,000
multiple-choice questions on a range of topics. The dataset assesses LLMs in
multitasking situations such as question answering, text generation, reading
comprehension, visual question answering, and more by including both textual
data and accompanying images. Using ChatGPT and BingChat, we evaluated LLMs on
the VNHSGE dataset and contrasted their performance with that of Vietnamese
students to see how well they performed. The results show that ChatGPT and
BingChat both perform at a human level in a number of areas, including
literature, English, history, geography, and civics education. They still have
space to grow, though, especially in the areas of mathematics, physics,
chemistry, and biology. The VNHSGE dataset seeks to provide an adequate
benchmark for assessing the abilities of LLMs with its wide-ranging coverage
and variety of activities. We intend to promote future developments in the
creation of LLMs by making this dataset available to the scientific community,
especially in resolving LLMs' limits in disciplines involving mathematics and

Mapping the Focal Points of WordPress: A Software and Critical Code Analysis
Programming languages or code can be examined through numerous analytical lenses. This project is a critical analysis of WordPress, a prevalent web content management system, applying four modes of inquiry. The project draws on theoretical perspectives and areas of study in media, software, platforms, code, language, and power structures. The applied research is based on Critical Code Studies, an interdisciplinary field of study that holds the potential as a theoretical lens and methodological toolkit to understand computational code beyond its function. The project begins with a critical code analysis of WordPress, examining its origins and source code and mapping selected vulnerabilities. An examination of the influence of digital and computational thinking follows this. The work also explores the intersection of code patching and vulnerability management and how code shapes our sense of control, trust, and empathy, ultimately arguing that a rhetorical-cultural lens can be used to better understand code\u27s controlling influence. Recurring themes throughout these analyses and observations are the connections to power and vulnerability in WordPress\u27 code and how cultural, processual, rhetorical, and ethical implications can be expressed through its code, creating a particular worldview. Code\u27s emergent properties help illustrate how human values and practices (e.g., empathy, aesthetics, language, and trust) become encoded in software design and how people perceive the software through its worldview. These connected analyses reveal cultural, processual, and vulnerability focal points and the influence these entanglements have concerning WordPress as code, software, and platform. WordPress is a complex sociotechnical platform worthy of further study, as is the interdisciplinary merging of theoretical perspectives and disciplines to critically examine code. Ultimately, this project helps further enrich the field by introducing focal points in code, examining sociocultural phenomena within the code, and offering techniques to apply critical code methods

Global markets are currently immersed in two all-encompassing and unstoppable processes: internationalization and globalization. While the former pushes companies to look beyond the borders of their country of origin to forge relationships with foreign trading partners, the latter fosters the standardization in all countries, by reducing spatiotemporal distances and breaking down geographical, political, economic and socio-cultural barriers. In recent decades, another domain has appeared to propel these unifying drives: Artificial Intelligence, together with its high technologies aiming to implement human cognitive abilities in machinery. The “Language Toolkit – Le lingue straniere al servizio dell’internazionalizzazione dell’impresa” project, promoted by the Department of Interpreting and Translation (Forlì Campus) in collaboration with the Romagna Chamber of Commerce (Forlì-Cesena and Rimini), seeks to help Italian SMEs make their way into the global market. It is precisely within this project that this dissertation has been conceived. Indeed, its purpose is to present the translation and localization project from English into Chinese of a series of texts produced by Bioretics© S.r.l.: an investor deck, the company website and part of the installation and use manual of the Aliquis© framework software, its flagship product. This dissertation is structured as follows: Chapter 1 presents the project and the company in detail; Chapter 2 outlines the internationalization and globalization processes and the Artificial Intelligence market both in Italy and in China; Chapter 3 provides the theoretical foundations for every aspect related to Specialized Translation, including website localization; Chapter 4 describes the resources and tools used to perform the translations; Chapter 5 proposes an analysis of the source texts; Chapter 6 is a commentary on translation strategies and choices
Recombinant spidroins from infinite circRNA translation
Spidroins are a diverse family of peptides and the main components of spider silk. They can be used to produce sustainable, lightweight and durable materials for a large variety of medical and engineering applications. Spiders’ territorial behaviour and cannibalism precludes farming them for silk. Recombinant protein synthesis is the most promising way of producing these peptides. However, many approaches have been unsuccessful in obtaining large titres of recombinant spidroins or ones of sufficient molecular weight. The work described here is focused on expressing high molecular weight spidroins from short circular RNA molecules. Mammalian host cells were transfected with designed circular-RNA-producing plasmid vectors. A backsplicing approach was implemented to successfully circularise RNA in a variety of mammalian cell types. This approach could not express any recombinant spidroins based on a variety of qualitative protein assays. Further experiments investigated the reasons behind this.
Additionally, due to the diversity of spidroins in a large number of spider lineages, there are potentially many spidroin sequences left to be discovered. A bioinformatic pipeline was developed that accepts transcriptome datasets from RNA sequencing and uses tandem repeat detection and profile HMM annotation to identify novel sequences. This pipeline was specifically designed for the identification of repeat domains in expressed sequences. 21 transcriptomes from 17 different species, encompassing a wide selection of basal and derived spider lineages, were investigated using this pipeline. Six previously undescribed spidroin sequences were discovered. This pipeline was additionally tested in the context of the suckerin protein family. These proteins have recently been investigated for their potential properties in medicine and engineering including adhesion in wet environments. The computational pipeline was able to double the number of suckerins known to date. Further phylogenetic analysis was implemented to expand on the knowledge of suckerins. This pipeline enables the identification of transcripts that may have been overlooked by more mainstream analysis methods such as pairwise homology searches. The spidroins and suckerins discovered by this pipeline may contribute to the large repertoire of potentially useful properties characteristic of this diverse peptide family
