    Given here is a panel report on the goals and objectives, requirements and recommendations for the investigation of plate motion and deformation. The goals are to refine our knowledge of plate motions, study regional and local deformation, and contribute to the solution of important societal problems. The requirements include basic space-positioning measurements, the use of global and regional data sets obtained with space-based techniques, topographic and geoid data to help characterize the internal processes that shape the planet, gravity data to study the density structure at depth and help determine the driving mechanisms for plate tectonics, and satellite images to map lithology, structure and morphology. The most important recommendation of the panel is for the implementation of a world-wide space-geodetic fiducial network to provide a systematic and uniform measure of global strain

    Design and performance of a Martian autonomous navigation system based on a smallsat constellation

    Deciphering the genesis and evolution of the Martian polar caps can provide crucial understanding of Mars' climate system and will be a big step forward for comparative climatology of the terrestrial planets. The growing scientific interest for the exploration of Mars at high latitudes, together with the need of minimizing the resources onboard landers and rovers, motivates the need for an adequate navigation support from orbit. In the context of the ARES4SC study, we propose a novel concept based on a constellation that can support autonomous navigation of different kind of users devoted to scientific investigations of those regions. We study two constellations, that differ mainly for the semi-major axis and the inclination of the orbits, composed of 5 small satellites (based on the SmallSats design being developed in Argotec), offering dedicated coverage of the Mars polar regions. We focus on the architecture of the inter-satellite links (ISL), the key elements providing both ephemerides and time synchronization for the broadcasting of the navigation message. Our concept is based on suitably configured coherent links, able to suppress the adverse effects of on-board clock instabilities and to provide excellent range-rate accuracies between the constellation's nodes. The data quality allows attaining good positioning performance for both constellations with a largely autonomous system. Indeed, we show that ground support can be heavily reduced by employing an ISL communication architecture. Periodic synchronization of the clocks on-board the constellation nodes with terrestrial time (TT) is enabled through the main spacecraft (the mother-craft), the only element of the constellation enabling radio communication with the Earth. We report on the results of numerical simulations in different operational scenarios and show that a very high-quality orbit reconstruction can be obtained for the constellation nodes using a batch-sequential filter or a batch filter with overlapping arcs, that could be implemented on board the mother-craft, thus enabling a high level of navigation autonomy. The assessment of the achievable positioning accuracy with this concept is fundamental to evaluate the feasibility of a future positioning system providing a global coverage of the red planet

    The Use of a Cap-mounted Tri-axial Accelerometer for Measurement of Distance, Lap Times and Stroke Rates in Swim Training

    This paper will report some of the findings from a trial which recorded accelerometer data from six elite level swimmers (three female and three male, varying primary event stroke and distance) over the course of a regular 15 week training block. Measurements from a head-mounted accelerometer are used to determine when the athlete is swimming, marking of turning points (and therefore distance and lap-time measurements), and is processed by frequency analysis to determine stroke-rate. Comparison with video where available, and with training plans and literature where not, have proven this method to be accurate and reliable for determining these performance metrics. The primary objective of this project was to develop a low-cost, simple and highly usable system for use in swim coaching, feedback from elite coaches has indicated that development of this could be an extremely useful addition to their training regime

    As part of ongoing work to obtain a reliable estimate of the total ice volume of Svalbard glaciers and their potential contribution to sea-level rise, we present here volume calculations, with detailed error estimates, for ten glaciers on western Nordenskiöld Land, central Spitsbergen, Svalbard. The volume estimates are based upon a dense net of GPR-retrieved ice thickness data collected over several field campaigns spanning the period 1999-2012. On the basis of the pattern of scattering in theradargrams, we also analyse the hydrothermal structure of these glaciers

    Effect on signal-to-noise ratio of splitting the continuous contacts of cuff electrodes into smaller recording areas.

    BackgroundCuff electrodes have been widely used chronically in different clinical applications. This neural interface has been dominantly used for nerve stimulation while interfering noise is the major issue when employed for recording purposes. Advancements have been made in rejecting extra-neural interference by using continuous ring contacts in tripolar topologies. Ring contacts provide an average of the neural activity, and thus reduce the information retrieved. Splitting these contacts into smaller recording areas could potentially increase the information content. In this study, we investigate the impact of such discretization on the Signal-to-Noise Ratio (SNR). The effect of contacts positioning and an additional short circuited pair of electrodes were also addressed.MethodsDifferent recording configurations using ring, dot, and a mixed of both contacts were studied in vitro in a frog model. An interfering signal was induced in the medium to simulate myoelectric noise. The experimental setup was design in such a way that the only difference between recordings was the configuration used. The inter-session experimental differences were taken care of by a common configuration that allowed normalization between electrode designs.ResultsIt was found that splitting all contacts into small recording areas had negative effects on noise rejection. However, if this is only applied to the central contact creating a mixed tripole configuration, a considerable and statistically significant improvement was observed. Moreover, the signal to noise ratio was equal or larger than what can be achieved with the best known configuration, namely the short circuited tripole. This suggests that for recording purposes, any tripole topology would benefit from splitting the central contact into one or more discrete contacts.ConclusionsOur results showed that a mixed tripole configuration performs better than the configuration including only ring contacts. Therefore, splitting the central ring contact of a cuff electrode into a number of dot contacts not only provides additional information but also an improved SNR. In addition, the effect of an additional pair of short circuited electrodes and the "end effect" observed with the presented method are in line with previous findings by other authors

    Context-based Pseudonym Changing Scheme for Vehicular Adhoc Networks

    Vehicular adhoc networks allow vehicles to share their information for safety and traffic efficiency. However, sharing information may threaten the driver privacy because it includes spatiotemporal information and is broadcast publicly and periodically. In this paper, we propose a context-adaptive pseudonym changing scheme which lets a vehicle decide autonomously when to change its pseudonym and how long it should remain silent to ensure unlinkability. This scheme adapts dynamically based on the density of the surrounding traffic and the user privacy preferences. We employ a multi-target tracking algorithm to measure privacy in terms of traceability in realistic vehicle traces. We use Monte Carlo analysis to estimate the quality of service (QoS) of a forward collision warning application when vehicles apply this scheme. According to the experimental results, the proposed scheme provides a better compromise between traceability and QoS than a random silent period scheme.Comment: Extended version of a previous paper "K.     Volume estimation of Styggedalsbreen glacier : Application of Ground Penetrating Radar for ice thickness measurement, mapping of subglacial bed topography, and volume estimation of Styggedalsbreen glacier

    Small valley glaciers respond fast to climate changes, but are also highly affected by short-term fluctuations in local precipitation and temperature. The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to use Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to estimate the volume of Styggedalsbreen through mapping of the bottom topography and modelling of the glacier thickness. Styggedalsbreen has a surface area of ~1.85 km² and is located in a part of Jotunheimen called Hurrungane. A total of 3 field excursions were carried out in the period August 2013-March 2014; two in August/September and one in March. A GPR system from Malå geoscience was used to survey more than 60 profiles in total, both north-south and east-west. Because of a combination of equipment failure and poor data quality, of these 60 profiles, only 11 were used in the final model to calculate a volume estimate. Ten of these profiles were made in March 2014 using a 50 MHz rough terrain antenna (RTA), while one was made in September 2013 with a 100 MHz RTA. After the data collection was complete, processing software like RadExplorer and Reflex2D-Quick (R2DQ) was used to process and interpret the profiles and determine the glacier thickness. Geographic information system (GIS) software was used to plot the profiles, interpolate data for areas where no measurements were done, and calculate the volume estimate. The final ice thickness model (figure) presents an estimated volume of 0.053 km3 ± 15 %, a maximum depth of 98.7 ± 8 m, a mean ice depth of 26.8 ± 8 m, and a subglacial U-shaped bed topography typical for glacier eroded alleys

    Magnetic Response of Magnetospirillum Gryphiswaldense

    In this study we modelled and measured the U-turn trajectories of individual magnetotactic bacteria under the application of rotating magnetic fields, ranging in ampitude from 1 to 12 mT. The model is based on the balance between rotational drag and magnetic torque. For accurate verification of this model, bacteria were observed inside 5 m tall microfluidic channels, so that they remained in focus during the entire trajectory. From the analysis of hundreds of trajectories and accurate measurements of bacteria and magnetosome chain dimensions, we confirmed that the model is correct within measurement error. The resulting average rate of rotation of Magnetospirillum Gryphiswaldense is 0.74 +- 0.03 rad/mTs.Comment: 17 pages, 12 figure
