Implementing atomic actions in Ada 95
Atomic actions are an important dynamic structuring technique that aid the construction of fault-tolerant concurrent systems. Although they were developed some years ago, none of the well-known commercially-available programming languages directly support their use. This paper summarizes software fault tolerance techniques for concurrent systems, evaluates the Ada 95 programming language from the perspective of its support for software fault tolerance, and shows how Ada 95 can be used to implement software fault tolerance techniques. In particular, it shows how packages, protected objects, requeue, exceptions, asynchronous transfer of control, tagged types, and controlled types can be used as building blocks from which to construct atomic actions with forward and backward error recovery, which are resilient to deserter tasks and task abortion
Cast-as-Intended Mechanism with Return Codes Based on PETs
We propose a method providing cast-as-intended verifiability for remote
electronic voting. The method is based on plaintext equivalence tests (PETs),
used to match the cast ballots against the pre-generated encrypted code tables.
Our solution provides an attractive balance of security and functional
properties. It is based on well-known cryptographic building blocks and relies
on standard cryptographic assumptions, which allows for relatively simple
security analysis. Our scheme is designed with a built-in fine-grained
distributed trust mechanism based on threshold decryption. It, finally, imposes
only very little additional computational burden on the voting platform, which
is especially important when voters use devices of restricted computational
power such as mobile phones. At the same time, the computational cost on the
server side is very reasonable and scales well with the increasing ballot size
A Standalone FPGA-based Miner for Lyra2REv2 Cryptocurrencies
Lyra2REv2 is a hashing algorithm that consists of a chain of individual
hashing algorithms, and it is used as a proof-of-work function in several
cryptocurrencies. The most crucial and exotic hashing algorithm in the
Lyra2REv2 chain is a specific instance of the general Lyra2 algorithm. This
work presents the first hardware implementation of the specific instance of
Lyra2 that is used in Lyra2REv2. Several properties of the aforementioned
algorithm are exploited in order to optimize the design. In addition, an
FPGA-based hardware implementation of a standalone miner for Lyra2REv2 on a
Xilinx Multi-Processor System on Chip is presented. The proposed Lyra2REv2
miner is shown to be significantly more energy efficient than both a GPU and a
commercially available FPGA-based miner. Finally, we also explain how the
simplified Lyra2 and Lyra2REv2 architectures can be modified with minimal

An Adaptive Design Methodology for Reduction of Product Development Risk
Embedded systems interaction with environment inherently complicates
understanding of requirements and their correct implementation. However,
product uncertainty is highest during early stages of development. Design
verification is an essential step in the development of any system, especially
for Embedded System. This paper introduces a novel adaptive design methodology,
which incorporates step-wise prototyping and verification. With each adaptive
step product-realization level is enhanced while decreasing the level of
product uncertainty, thereby reducing the overall costs. The back-bone of this
frame-work is the development of Domain Specific Operational (DOP) Model and
the associated Verification Instrumentation for Test and Evaluation, developed
based on the DOP model. Together they generate functionally valid test-sequence
for carrying out prototype evaluation. With the help of a case study 'Multimode
Detection Subsystem' the application of this method is sketched. The design
methodologies can be compared by defining and computing a generic performance
criterion like Average design-cycle Risk. For the case study, by computing
Average design-cycle Risk, it is shown that the adaptive method reduces the
product development risk for a small increase in the total design cycle time.Comment: 21 pages, 9 figure
An evaluation of Ada for Al applications
Expert system technology seems to be the most promising type of Artificial Intelligence (AI) application for Ada. An expert system implemented with an expert system shell provides a highly structured approach that fits well with the structured approach found in Ada systems. The current commercial expert system shells use Lisp. In this highly structured situation a shell could be built that used Ada just as well. On the other hand, if it is necessary to deal with some AI problems that are not suited to expert systems, the use of Ada becomes more problematical. Ada was not designed as an AI development language, and is not suited to that. It is possible that an application developed in say, Common Lisp could be translated to Ada for actual use in a particular application, but this could be difficult. Some standard Ada packages could be developed to make such a translation easier. If the most general AI programs need to be dealt with, a Common Lisp system integrated with the Ada Environment is probably necessary. Aside from problems with language features, Ada, by itself, is not well suited to the prototyping and incremental development that is well supported by Lisp
Free and regular mixed-model sequences by a linear program-assisted hybrid algorithm GRASP-LP
A linear program-assisted hybrid algorithm (GRASP-LP) is presented to solve a mixed-model sequencing problem in an assembly line. The issue of the problem is to obtain manufacturing sequences of product models with the minimum work overload, allowing the free interruption of operations at workstations and preserving the production mix.
