Motorola cash management: The evolution of a global system

The set of interorganizational information systems used for global cash management in business markets is analyzed. A longitudinal case study of Motorola is presented. Their strategy has evolved from an internal cost saving focus to a cooperative one, yielding significant strategic benefits by the inclusion of trading partners. The financial aspects of Motorola's business relationships with trading partners and its principal bank have been transformed through a process of organizational learning and adaptation coupled with the close integration of information systems (ISs) throughout the cash supply chain. Cooperative behavior between Motorola and its suppliers, with the help of Citibank, has enabled a coordinated response to bring cash flows in line with product flows. The results are compared with existing IS marketing theories on business relationships, market structure, and globalization

This thesis will focus on the study of corporate universities and the development of a business plan for the implementation of Bi-State University. Research presented will cause the reader \O consider alternatives 10 accomplish strategic organizational training and development objectives. The reader should keep in mind their organizational culture and the developmental needs of their organization\u27s human resources. The purpose of this commentary is to identify the various options available beyond traditional training methods to develop a corporate university for Bi-State Development Agency. The best way to research approaches to human development is to ask the subject matter experts. Several approaches were used in this research including phone interviews, interviews with practitioners in HR publications, teleconference interviews, journal articles from training/HR national publications, published works of professional trainers and books from the American Society of Training and Development Best Practices Series. The business plan will act as a proposal for a partnership with a local university to offer an on-sight Bachelors program at Bi-State. The degree program will be a study in Management with a major in Transportation. Over twenty Bi-State employees have a Masters or Ph. D. that qualifies their participation as instructors m this joint venture. Many of these people have or are currently teaching in local colleges and universities. The education plan will go beyond theory into practical application using real-world transportation problems and opportunities. Students will learn through a unique challenge of combining classroom theory with practical application of the learned theory on tl1e job at Bi-State. This developmental approach will provide participants with education and practical career building learning. This project is one of a series of HR initiatives to assist Bi-State in creating a Learning Organization and help become the employer of choice in the public sector in the St. Louis region

How to transition Chinese firms into world-class corporations : organizational and cultural innovations are key

Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Sloan School of Management, 2007.Includes bibliographical references (p. 255-262).Entering the 21st Century, after almost 30 years development of the Chinese economy, several famous Chinese firms have grown to a significant scale and achieved the rudiments of world-class corporations. Following Japanese and Korean corporations, several firms began their globalization and expansion: Lenovo, Haier, Huawei, and TCL. During the short period of Chinese corporations' globalization, however, they have faced various kinds of difficulties and challenges. Starting from case analyses of eight major electronics corporations (including Philips, Motorola, Toshiba, LG, Acer, Lenovo, Huawei, and TCL, corporations in Europe, USA, Japan, Korea, Taiwan of China and mainland China), the thesis expounds the course of their growth from a historical perspective. It uses the approach of comparison, conclusion and deduction to seek common elements of their success and the common issues faced in their development. The case studies are the principal factual basis of the discussion in the thesis. The main text starts from consideration of organizational and cultural innovation and discusses the forms, evolution, and innovation in organizational development.(cont.) At the same time, I analyze the differences in typical methodology, system, and culture resulting from the differences in national culture in America, Japan, and China. Based on the characteristics of Chinese "Small Groupism" culture, I propose that a solution for Chinese organizational management and cultural innovation is to establish the "Rigid Frame and Flexible Organism," in other words to establish management and cultural bureaucratic organization. In Chapter III, from the perspective of practical application, I explain the methods of diagnosing organizational culture and how effectively to advance innovation in organizational culture. Hereafter, based on the trend and scale analysis of the eight corporations, I draw conclusions as to the common elements in their development as well as guidance for the development and globalization of Chinese electronic corporations. Clinical quality improvement and medicine

Medical practice is facing many pressures, all requiring ever-higher standards and better 'quality' in the provision of clinical care. Medicine is not alone in facing such forces, and it may be appropriate to apply the methodology used in other disciplines to address this issue; common problems are generally amenable to common solutions. The 'quality' approach was initially applied to health care in the USA, presumably because of the accent on market forces and the relationship with market share. In recent years, other health care systems have invested in this approach, applying lessons learned from management disciplines and the aviation industly. The Institute of Medicine's report on health care quality noted that 'every system is perfectly designed to obtain the results it gets' fll The European Union has thus far not included quality as a formal item on its agenda; however, with increasing mobility of patients and health professionals, there is pressure for legislative action addressing risk management and quality improvement. The development of a European approach to ensure the highest quality standards, free movement in the European Union, as well as the medical devices industry, are all areas that are raising interest. Comparing world regional sustainable supply chain finance using big data analytics:A bibliometric analysis

Purpose: Sustainable supply chain finance (SSCF) is a fascinated consideration for both academics and practitioners because the indicators are still underdeveloped in achieving SSCF. This study proposes a bibliometric data-driven analysis from the literature to illustrate a clear overall concept of SSCF that reveals hidden indicators for further improvement. Design/methodology/approach: A hybrid quantitative and qualitative approach combining data-driven analysis, fuzzy Delphi method (FDM), entropy weight method (EWM) and fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory (FDEMATEL) is employed to address the uncertainty in the context. Findings: The results show that blockchain, cash flow shortage, reverse factoring, risk assessment and triple bottom line (TBL) play significant roles in SSCF. A comparison of the challenges and gaps among different geographic regions is provided in both advanced local perspective and a global state-of-the-art assessment. There are 35 countries/territories being categorized into five geographic regions. Of the five regions, two, Latin America and the Caribbean and Africa, show the needs for more improvement, exclusively in collaboration strategies and financial crisis. Exogenous impacts of wars, natural disasters and disease epidemics are implied as inevitable attributes for enhancing the sustainability. Originality/value: This study contributes to (1) boundary SSCF foundations by data driven, (2) identifying the critical SSCF indicators and providing the knowledge gaps and directions as references for further examination and (3) addressing the gaps and challenges in different geographic regions to provide advanced assessment from local viewpoint and to diagnose the comprehensive global state of the art of SSCF

Supply chain management is an alternative approach used in the automotive industry to achieve higher levels of competitiveness. Many challenges and problems can be resolved competitively through efficient and effective supply chain. In examining the issues of consistency in supply chain management a conceptual framework has been developed. This framework elaborates the relationship between supply chain strategy and supply chain performance through the mediation role of supply chain practices. In addition, this framework also describes the moderating role of quality management practices in enhancing supply chain performance. For the purpose of testing the research framework, a quantitative approach using survey method was employed. A total of 275 questionnaire sets were distributed to automotive component suppliers located in Malaysia. Out of that number, 65 questionnaire sets were returned and usable for the data analysis. The collected data were analysed using descriptive statistics and inferential statistics approaches. The results showed that supply chain strategy is a poor predictor of supply chain performance but it can be a strong predictor of supply chain practices. This illustrates the need of practices in ensuring the developed strategy can contribute toward improved supply chain performance. The conducted test of mediation effect showed that the supply chain practice acts as a full mediator towards relationship between supply chain strategy and performance. This study has also proven that quality management practices can play the role as a moderating variable in the relationship between supply chain strategy and performance. More importantly, this study revealed that if quality management practices had been applied at a high level, it could act as a strategy to enhance supply chain performance. It is hoped that the findings can contribute toward the enrichment of knowledge in the supply chain management area and also help the industry players in managing supply chain more efficiently and effectively

Creating ladders out of chains : China's technological development in a world of global production

Thesis (Ph. D.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Political Science, 2005.Includes bibliographical references (p. 373-390).With the advent of economic globalization, the terms of debate over the political and social conditions necessary to foster development in the Global South have shifted. Examining technological development, one important aspect of economic development, in China, I explore the prospects for and conditions conducive to development under globalization. My main finding is that the developing world has significant opportunities for development through combining the institutions of global capital, defined here as the financial institutions of the advanced economies, with co-ethnic technologists returning from abroad. Global capital serves to ameliorate the inefficiencies of China's financial sector. The co-ethnic technologists establish hybrid firms that possess foreign finance and a strategic commitment to develop core technological activities in China, a strategic orientation commonly associated with domestic firms and not foreign ones. I call this developmental path the global hybrid model. Using two case studies from China's IT industry, I demonstrate that the hybrid firms outperform both other foreign-invested enterprises and domestic firms in technological upgrading.(cont.) The domestic firms underperform the foreign-invested firms because the Chinese financial system severely misallocates credit. Credit misallocation undermines incentives for technological development among domestic firms. The hybrids and the other foreign-invested firms rely on the institutions of global capital to allocate capital more efficiently, but the hybrids contribute more to local technological development due to their strategic commitment to China. The shared ethnic identity between the hybrids' owners and the local economy provide these firms with the ideas and interests that motivate them to pursue this strategic commitment to China. The global hybrid path provides several insights on the problem of development under globalization. By importing foreign financial institutions, the global hybrid model lowers the institutional bar for development because developing countries need not have highly capable states or well-functioning markets to develop. Yet, global capital alone is not sufficient to achieve development because global capital has no serious commitment to host country development.(cont.) In place of the previously proposed solution of state discipline of foreign firms to create commitment, co-ethnic technologists provide the motivation for hybrid firms to contribute significantly to developing host economies.by Douglas B.
