EVALUATING INTERNET PROTOCOL VERSION 6 (IPv6) AGAINST VERSION 4 (IPv4)

This paper evaluates the performance of IPv6 against IPv4. IPv4 has address space shortages. The use of Classless Inter-Domain Routing (CIDR) and Network Address Translation (NAT) helped to address these shortages. However, Featuresbuilt into IPv6 such as autoconfiguration, IPSec, Mobility, Multiple addresses for hosts and networks, Multicastcommunication make it well worth the cost, time and effort required to migrate to it. Performance metrics used in order toanalyze the protocols are network delay, network drop, and throughput. Results showed that IPv6 is not better in terms ofpacket management than IPv4. The results also showed that IPv6 has higher delay, and packet drop than IPv4; though themargin between the values are however small. It was also found that IPv6 has a higher throughput. It is hereby concluded, that even though IPv4 is performing better, it will not solve the address limitation problem. This has made it inevitable torecommend IPv6 as a replacement for the IPv4.Keywords: Latency, Throughput, PacketDrop, NAT, Mobility, Autoconfiguration

Wireless Authentication Solution and TTCN-3 based Test Framework for ISO-15118 Wireless V2G Communication

Vehicle to grid (V2G) communication for electric vehicles and their charging points is already well established by the ISO 15118 standard. The standard allows vehicles to communicate with the charging station using the power cable, i.e. a wired link, but it is improved to enable wireless (WLAN) links as well. This paper aims to provide an implementation accomplishes a wireless authentication solution (WAS). With that the electric vehicles can establish V2G connection when approaching the charging pool, then identify and authenticate the driver and/or the vehicle. Furthermore, the paper presents a TTCN-3 based validation and verification (V&V) framework in order to test the conformance of the prototype implementation against the standard

    Teaching Networks to Digital Humanists

Contribution: A technical course in a multidisciplinary university program has to provide high-level skills, with limited lecturing hours and student background. This article investigates the principles for its design and reports about a study case. Background: The overall course organization needs to address specific learning targets and teaching techniques, different from those used in traditional courses on the topic. Research Question: A stepwise strategy assists a principled design that allows dynamic, long-term improvements. Methodology: The evaluation of its applicability requires a years-long record of historical data. The article studies the evolution of a course over six years using simple monitoring techniques: surveys and rubric-based examinations. Findings: Monitoring emerges as an essential feature for course evolution: a focused examination provides the best results, while institutional, wide-spectrum surveys appear to be of little help

    Chimaera 1.0 Tutorial & Reference

Chimaera is a model intended to secure data (messages) exchanges between applications. Chimaera uses the PEM (Privacy Enhanced Mail) format which enables the receiver to authentificate the sender identity using special informations (certificates, signature, hash-coding) held into the message. PEM is a model for e-mail authentification and certification. PEM complies to X509 standard as for the handling of certificates. Chimaera provides a way to generate PEM formatted mails. Such mails will be fully read by users running a similar PEM application, not necessarily Chimaera. Basic Chimaera services are: The certification of public keys of individuals thru submission to the local certification authority

An Ontology Based Approach Towards A Universal Description Framework for Home Networks

    Get PDF
Current home networks typically involve two or more machines sharing network resources. The vision for the home network has grown from a simple computer network, to every day appliances embedded with network capabilities. In this environment devices and services within the home can interoperate, regardless of protocol or platform. Network clients can discover required resources by performing network discovery over component descriptions. Common approaches to this discovery process involve simple matching of keywords or attribute/value pairings. Interest emerging from the Semantic Web community has led to ontology languages being applied to network domains, providing a logical and semantically rich approach to both describing and discovering network components. In much of the existing work within this domain, developers have focused on defining new description frameworks in isolation from existing protocol frameworks and vocabularies. This work proposes an ontology-based description framework which takes the ontology approach to the next step, where existing description frameworks are in- corporated into the ontology-based framework, allowing discovery mechanisms to cover multiple existing domains. In this manner, existing protocols and networking approaches can participate in semantically-rich discovery processes. This framework also includes a system architecture developed for the purpose of reconciling existing home network solutions with the ontology-based discovery process. This work also describes an implementation of the approach and is deployed within a home-network environment. This implementation involves existing home networking frameworks, protocols and components, allowing the claims of this work to be examined and evaluated from a ‘real-world’ perspective
