Comparing the Performance of SNMP and Web Services-Based Management
his paper compares the performance of Web services based network monitoring to traditional, SNMP based, monitoring. The study focuses on the ifTable, and investigates performance as function of the number of retrieved objects. The following aspects are examined: bandwidth usage, CPU time, memory consumption and round trip delay. For our study several prototypes of Web services based agents were implemented; these prototypes can retrieve single ifTable elements, ifTable rows, ifTable columns or the entire ifTable. This paper presents a generic formula to calculate SNMP’s bandwidth requirements; the bandwidth consumption of our prototypes was compared to that formula. The CPU time, memory consumption and round trip delay of our prototypes was compared to Net-SNMP, as well as several other SNMP agents. Our measurements show that SNMP is more efficient in cases where only a single object is retrieved; for larger number of objects Web services may be more efficient. Our study also shows that, if performance is the issue, the choice between BER (SNMP) or XML (Web services) encoding is generally not the determining factor; other choices can have stronger impact on performance

Steganography-based secret and reliable communications: Improving steganographic capacity and imperceptibility
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and awarded by Brunel University.Unlike encryption, steganography hides the very existence of secret information rather than hiding its meaning only. Image based steganography is the most common system used since digital images are widely used over the Internet and Web. However, the capacity is mostly limited and restricted by the size of cover images. In addition, there is a tradeoff between both steganographic capacity and stego image quality. Therefore, increasing steganographic capacity and enhancing stego image quality are still challenges, and this is exactly our research main aim. Related to this, we also investigate hiding secret information in communication protocols, namely Simple Object Access Protocol (SOAP) message, rather than in conventional digital files.
To get a high steganographic capacity, two novel steganography methods were proposed. The first method was based on using 16x16 non-overlapping blocks and quantisation table for Joint Photographic Experts Group (JPEG) compression instead of 8x8. Then, the quality of JPEG stego images was enhanced by using optimised quantisation tables instead of the default tables. The second method, the hybrid method, was based on using optimised quantisation tables and two hiding techniques: JSteg along with our first proposed method. To increase the
steganographic capacity, the impact of hiding data within image chrominance was
investigated and explained. Since peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR) is extensively
used as a quality measure of stego images, the reliability of PSNR for stego images was also evaluated in the work described in this thesis. Finally, to eliminate any detectable traces that traditional steganography may leave in stego files, a novel and undetectable steganography method based on SOAP messages was proposed.
All methods proposed have been empirically validated as to indicate their utility
and value. The results revealed that our methods and suggestions improved the main aspects of image steganography. Nevertheless, PSNR was found not to be a
reliable quality evaluation measure to be used with stego image. On the other hand, information hiding in SOAP messages represented a distinctive way for undetectable and secret communication.The Ministry of Higher Education in Syria

Dynamic Hilbert clustering based on convex set for web services aggregation
In recent years, web services run by big corporations and different application-specific data centers have all been embraced by several companies worldwide. Web services provide several benefits when compared to other communication technologies. However, it still suffers from congestion and bottlenecks as well as a significant delay due to the tremendous load caused by a large number of web service requests from end users. Clustering and then aggregating similar web services as one compressed message can potentially achieve network traffic reduction. This paper proposes a dynamic Hilbert clustering as a new model for clustering web services based on convex set similarity. Mathematically, the suggested models compute the degree of similarity between simple object access protocol (SOAP) messages and then cluster them into groups with high similarity. Next, each cluster is aggregated as a compact message that is finally encoded by fixed-length or Huffman. The experiment results have shown the suggested model performs better than the conventional clustering techniques in terms of compression ratio. Evaluating SOAP for High Performance Business Applications: Real-Time Trading Systems
Web services, with an emphasis on open standards and flexibility, may provide benefits over existing capital markets integration practices. However, web services must first meet certain technical requirements including performance, security and fault--tolerance. This paper presents an experimental evaluation of SOAP performance using realistic business application message content. To get some indication of whether SOAP is appropriate for high performance capital markets systems, the results are compared with a widely used existing protocol. The study finds that, although SOAP performs relatively poorly, the difference is less than in scientific computing environments. Furthermore, we find that in realistic business applications it is possible for text--based wire formats to have comparable performance to binary, and that the text--based nature of XML is not sufficient to explain SOAP's inefficiency. This suggests that further work may enable SOAP to become a viable wire format for high performance business applications

RESTful Wireless Sensor Networks
Sensor networks have diverse structures and generally employ proprietary protocols to gather useful information about the physical world. This diversity generates problems to interact with these sensors since custom APIs are needed which are tedious, error prone and have steep learning curve. In this thesis, I present RESThing, a lightweight REST framework for wireless sensor networks to ease the process of interacting with these sensors by making them accessible over the Web. I evaluate the system and show that it is feasible to support widely used and standard Web protocols in wireless sensor networks. Being able to integrate these tiny devices seamlessly into the global information medium, we can achieve the Web of Things
