Control speculation for energy-efficient next-generation superscalar processors
Conventional front-end designs attempt to maximize the number of "in-flight" instructions in the pipeline. However, branch mispredictions cause the processor to fetch useless instructions that are eventually squashed, increasing front-end energy and issue queue utilization and, thus, wasting around 30 percent of the power dissipated by a processor. Furthermore, processor design trends lead to increasing clock frequencies by lengthening the pipeline, which puts more pressure on the branch prediction engine since branches take longer to be resolved. As next-generation high-performance processors become deeply pipelined, the amount of wasted energy due to misspeculated instructions will go up. The aim of this work is to reduce the energy consumption of misspeculated instructions. We propose selective throttling, which triggers different power-aware techniques (fetch throttling, decode throttling, or disabling the selection logic) depending on the branch prediction confidence level. Results show that combining fetch-bandwidth reduction along with select-logic disabling provides the best performance in terms of overall energy reduction and energy-delay product improvement (14 percent and 10 percent, respectively, for a processor with a 22-stage pipeline and 16 percent and 13 percent, respectively, for a processor with a 42-stage pipeline).Peer ReviewedPostprint (published version
Randomized cache placement for eliminating conflicts
Applications with regular patterns of memory access can experience high levels of cache conflict misses. In shared-memory multiprocessors conflict misses can be increased significantly by the data transpositions required for parallelization. Techniques such as blocking which are introduced within a single thread to improve locality, can result in yet more conflict misses. The tension between minimizing cache conflicts and the other transformations needed for efficient parallelization leads to complex optimization problems for parallelizing compilers. This paper shows how the introduction of a pseudorandom element into the cache index function can effectively eliminate repetitive conflict misses and produce a cache where miss ratio depends solely on working set behavior. We examine the impact of pseudorandom cache indexing on processor cycle times and present practical solutions to some of the major implementation issues for this type of cache. Our conclusions are supported by simulations of a superscalar out-of-order processor executing the SPEC95 benchmarks, as well as from cache simulations of individual loop kernels to illustrate specific effects. An evaluation of multiple branch predictor and trace cache advanced fetch unit designs for dynamically scheduled superscalar processors
Semiconductor feature size continues to decrease permitting superscalar microprocessors to continue to increase the number of functional units available for execution. As the instruction issue width increases beyond the five instruction average basic block size of integer programs, more than one basic block must be issued per cycle to continue to increase instructions per cycle (IPC) performance. Researchers have created methods of fetching instructions beyond the first taken branch to overcome the bottleneck created by the limitations of conventional single branch predictors. We compare the performance of the multiple branch prediction (MBP) and trace cache (TC) fetch unit optimization methods. Multiple branch predictor fetch unit designs issue multiple basic blocks per cycle using a branch address cache and a multiple branch predictor. A trace cache uses the runtime instruction stream to create fixed length instruction traces that encapsulate multiple basic blocks. The comparison is performed by using a SPARC v8 timing based simulator. We simulate both advanced fetch methods and execute benchmarks from the SPEC CPU2000 suite. The results of the simulations are compared and a detailed analysis of both microarchitectures is performed. We find that both fetch unit designs provide a competitive IPC performance. As issue width is increased from an eight to sixteen way superscalar, the IPC performance improves implying that these fetch unit designs are able to take advantage of the wider issue widths. The MBP can use a smaller L1 instruction cache size than the TC and yet achieve a similar IPC performance. Pre-arranged instructions provided by the TC allow the pipeline stages to be shortened in comparison to the MBP. The shorter pipeline significantly improves the IPC performance. Prior trace cache research used two or more ports to the instruction cache to improve the chances of fetching a full basic block per cycle. This was at the expense of instruction cache line realignment complexity. Our results show good performance with a single instruction cache port. We study an approximately equal cost implementation for the MBP and TC. Of the six benchmarks studied, the TC outperforms the MBP over four of the benchmarks
POOR MAN’S TRACE CACHE: A VARIABLE DELAY SLOT ARCHITECTURE
We introduce a novel fetch architecture called Poor Man’s Trace Cache (PMTC). PMTC constructs taken-path instruction traces via instruction replication in static code and inserts them after unconditional direct and select conditional direct control transfer instructions. These traces extend to the end of the cache line. Since available space for trace insertion may vary by the position of the control transfer instruction within the line, we refer to these fetch slots as variable delay slots. This approach ensures traces are fetched along with the control transfer instruction that initiated the trace. Branch, jump and return instruction semantics as well as the fetch unit are modified to utilize traces in delay slots. PMTC yields the following benefits: 1. Average fetch bandwidth increases as the front end can fetch across taken control transfer instructions in a single cycle. 2. The dynamic number of instruction cache lines fetched by the processor is reduced as multiple non contiguous basic blocks along a given path are encountered in one fetch cycle. 3. Replication of a branch instruction along multiple paths provides path separability for branches, which positively impacts branch prediction accuracy. PMTC mechanism requires minimal modifications to the processor’s fetch unit and the trace insertion algorithm can easily be implemented within the assembler without compiler support
Low Power Processor Architectures and Contemporary Techniques for Power Optimization – A Review
The technological evolution has increased the number of transistors for a given die area significantly and increased the switching speed from few MHz to GHz range. Such inversely proportional decline in size and boost in performance consequently demands shrinking of supply voltage and effective power dissipation in chips with millions of transistors. This has triggered substantial amount of research in power reduction techniques into almost every aspect of the chip and particularly the processor cores contained in the chip. This paper presents an overview of techniques for achieving the power efficiency mainly at the processor core level but also visits related domains such as buses and memories. There are various processor parameters and features such as supply voltage, clock frequency, cache and pipelining which can be optimized to reduce the power consumption of the processor. This paper discusses various ways in which these parameters can be optimized. Also, emerging power efficient processor architectures are overviewed and research activities are discussed which should help reader identify how these factors in a processor contribute to power consumption. Some of these concepts have been already established whereas others are still active research areas. © 2009 ACADEMY PUBLISHER
Superscalar RISC-V Processor with SIMD Vector Extension
With the increasing number of digital products in the market, the need for robust and highly configurable processors rises. The demand is convened by the stable and extensible open-sourced RISC-V instruction set architecture. RISC-V processors are becoming popular in many fields of applications and research.
This thesis presents a dual-issue superscalar RISC-V processor design with dynamic execution. The proposed design employs the global sharing scheme for branch prediction and Tomasulo algorithm for out-of-order execution. The processor is capable of speculative execution with five checkpoints. Data flow in the instruction dispatch and commit stages is optimized to achieve higher instruction throughput.
The superscalar processor is extended with a customized vector instruction set of single-instruction-multiple-data computations to specifically improve the performance on machine learning tasks. According to the definition of the proposed vector instruction set, the scratchpad memory and element-wise arithmetic units are implemented in the vector co-processor.
Different test programs are evaluated on the fully-tested superscalar processor. Compared to the reference work, the proposed design improves 18.9% on average instruction throughput and 4.92% on average prediction hit rate, with 16.9% higher operating clock frequency synthesized on the Intel Arria 10 FPGA board.
The forward propagation of a convolution neural network model is evaluated by the standalone superscalar processor and the integration of the vector co-processor. The vector program with software-level optimizations achieves 9.53Ă— improvement on instruction throughput and 10.18Ă— improvement on real-time throughput. Identifying, Quantifying, Extracting and Enhancing Implicit Parallelism
The shift of the microprocessor industry towards multicore architectures has
placed a huge burden on the programmers by requiring explicit parallelization
for performance. Implicit Parallelization is an alternative that could ease the
burden on programmers by parallelizing applications ???under the covers??? while
maintaining sequential semantics externally. This thesis develops a novel
approach for thinking about parallelism, by casting the problem of
parallelization in terms of instruction criticality. Using this approach,
parallelism in a program region is readily identified when certain conditions
about fetch-criticality are satisfied by the region. The thesis formalizes this
approach by developing a criticality-driven model of task-based
parallelization. The model can accurately predict the parallelism that would be
exposed by potential task choices by capturing a wide set of sources of
parallelism as well as costs to parallelization.
The criticality-driven model enables the development of two key components for
Implicit Parallelization: a task selection policy, and a bottleneck analysis
tool. The task selection policy can partition a single-threaded program into
tasks that will profitably execute concurrently on a multicore architecture in
spite of the costs associated with enforcing data-dependences and with
task-related actions. The bottleneck analysis tool gives feedback to the
programmers about data-dependences that limit parallelism. In particular, there
are several ???accidental dependences??? that can be easily removed with large
improvements in parallelism. These tools combine into a systematic methodology
for performance tuning in Implicit Parallelization. Finally, armed with the
criticality-driven model, the thesis revisits several architectural design
decisions, and finds several encouraging ways forward to increase the scope of

Out-of-Order Retirement of Instructions in Superscalar, Multithreaded, and Multicore Processors
Los procesadores superescalares actuales utilizan un reorder buffer (ROB) para contabilizar las instrucciones en vuelo. El ROB se implementa como una cola FIFO first in first out en la que las instrucciones se insertan en orden de programa despuĂ©s de ser decodificadas, y de la que se extraen tambiĂ©n en orden de programa en la etapa commit. El uso de esta estructura proporciona un soporte simple para la especulaciĂłn, las excepciones precisas y la reclamaciĂłn de registros. Sin embargo, el hecho de retirar instrucciones en orden puede degradar las prestaciones si una operaciĂłn de alta latencia está bloqueando la cabecera del ROB. Varias propuestas se han publicado atacando este problema. La mayorĂa utiliza retirada de instrucciones fuera de orden de forma especulativa, requiriendo almacenar puntos de recuperaciĂłn (checkpoints) para restaurar un estado válido del procesador ante un fallo de especulaciĂłn. Mitigating the Effect of Misspeculations in Superscalar Processors
Modern superscalar processors highly rely on the speculative execution which speculatively executes instructions and then verifies. If the prediction is different from the execution result, a misspeculation recovery is performed. Misspeculation recovery penalties still account for a substantial amount of performance reduction. This work focuses on the techniques to mitigate the effect of recovery penalties and proposes practical mechanisms which are thoroughly implemented and analyzed.
In general, we can divide the misspeculation penalty into four parts: misspeculation detection delay; stale instruction elimination delay; state restoration delay and pipeline fill delay. This dissertation does not consider the detection delay, instead, we design four innovative mechanisms. Some of these mechanisms target a specific recovery delay whereas others target multiple types of delay in a unified algorithm.
Mower was designed to address the stale instruction elimination delay and the state restoration delay by using a special walker. When a misprediction is detected, the walker will scan and repair the instructions which are younger than the mispredicted instruction. During the walking procedure, the correct state is restored and the stale instructions are eliminated.
Based on Mower, we further simplify the design and develop a Two-Phase recovery mechanism. This mechanism uses only a basic recovery mechanism except for the case in which the retire stage was stalled by a long latency instruction. When the retire stage is stalled, the second phase is launched and the instructions in the pipeline are re-fetched. Two-Phase mechanism recovers from an earlier point in the program and overlaps the recovery penalty with the long latency penalty.
In reality, some of the instructions on the wrong path can be reused during the recovery. However, such reuse of misprediction results is not easy and most of the time involves significant complexity. We design Passing Loop to reduce the pipeline fill delay. We applied our mechanism only for short forward branches which eliminates a substantial amount of complexity.
In terms of memory dependence speculation and associated delays due to memory ordering violations, we develop a mechanism that optimizes store-queue-free architectures. A store-queue-free architecture experiences more memory dependence mispredictions due to its aggressive approach to speculations. A common solution is to delay the execution of an instruction which is more likely to be mispredicted. We propose a mechanism to dynamically insert predicates for comparing the address of memory instructions, which is called “Dynamic Memory Dependence Predication” (DMDP). This mechanism boosts the instruction execution to its earliest point and reduces the number of mispredictions
