The article introduces parts of a self-study programme for LLB (Europe) German students, which include the use of satellite TV and CALL. The whole self-study programme was tested for two years at the Nottingham Trent University. This paper focuses on the rationale of the study programme, pedagogical objectives and theoretical considerations within the context of language learning as well as the students’ evaluation. The evaluation shows that overall the package was seen as a positive learning experience. CALL can be a solution to the problem of limited materials for languages for specific purposes. The use of mixed media is possible for language teaching for specific purposes without having to be combined in multimedia computer-based programmes. CALL can also be a solution to the problems caused by reduced contact time

The predominant context for strategy research over the last three decades has focused on language learning situated in a conventional classroom environment. Computer technology has brought about many changes in language learning and has become ecological and normalized rather than a supporting tool in the language classroom. Consequently, the landscape of language learning has been rapidly and largely changed with the normalization of technologies in people’s daily communication. The pervasive use of mobile technologies and easy access to online resources require that digital language learners understand and employ appropriate learning strategies for learning effectiveness and that their teachers are able and willing to teach these strategies as needed. This article provides an overview of the state-of-the-art research into technology-enhanced language learning strategies. The strategies under review include those for language learning skill areas, language subsystems, and self-regulated learning. At the end, we discuss the pressing issues that Digital Age language learning has posed to learners, teachers, and researchers and propose considerations for strategy research in digital realms

Improving K-12 ELL Students\u27 Comprehension of Academic Text

Successful acquisition of academic English is dependent upon a multitude of cognitive, linguistic, and educational variables, all based on the socio-cultural perspectives and powers that regulate what occurs in the classroom. The function and meaning of academic texts may be lost on the student with limited knowledge and experience with academic social contexts. The teacher must work within the confines of societal and educational boundaries. The provision of experience, motivation, and opportunities for interaction is highly beneficial, in addition to explicitly teaching vocabulary and learning strategies. A functional linguistics approach, delivered through Readers\u27 Workshop, based on the work of Aguirre-Munoz et al., 2006, is described

Technology has become second nature to today\u27s students. Because of this comfort, adding technology to the classroom has become more and more popular in schools everywhere. Technology not only excites students, but also holds their focus and keeps them on takes. For teachers, technology opens up a whole new window to more activities, games, and lesson for all subjects. Technology can also make information and learning possible for students who do not have access to certain subjects. Unfortunately, foreign language programs are growing smaller in schools across the country due to a lack of resources. Technology is a great solution to this problem. Technology can also elevate a student\u27s language learning experience. This mixed methods research sought to see if adding technology, specifically virtual immersion, to a Spanish class would help with the student\u27s vocabulary acquisition. Likert scale surveys and interviews were also implemented to gauge the students\u27 opinions on the virtual immersion process
