    Understanding and Improving Locomotion: The Simultaneous Optimization of Motion and Morphology in Legged Robots

    There exist many open design questions in the field of legged robotics. Should leg extension and retraction occur with a knee or a prismatic joint? Will adding a compliant ankle lead to improved energetics compared to a point foot? Should quadrupeds have a flexible or a rigid spine? Should elastic elements in the actuation be placed in parallel or in series with the motors? Though these questions may seem basic, they are fundamentally difficult to approach. A robot with either discrete choice will likely need very different components and use very different motion to perform at its best. To make a fair comparison between two design variations, roboticists need to ask, is the best version of a robot with a discrete morphological variation better than the best version of a robot with the other variation? In this dissertation, I propose to answer these type of questions using an optimization based approach. Using numerical algorithms, I let a computer determine the best possible motion and best set of parameters for each design variation in order to be able to compare the best instance of each variation against each other. I developed and implemented that methodology to explore three primary robotic design questions. In the first, I asked if parallel or series elastic actuation is the more energetically economical choice for a legged robot. Looking at a variety of force and energy based cost functions, I mapped the optimal motion cost landscape as a function of configurable parameters in the hoppers. In the best case, the series configuration was more economical for an energy based cost function, and the parallel configuration was better for a force based cost function. I then took this work a step further and included the configurable parameters directly within the optimization on a model with gear friction. I found, for the most realistic cost function, the electrical work, that series was the better choice when the majority of the transmission was handled by a low-friction rotary-to-linear transmission. In the second design question, I extended this analysis to a two-dimensional monoped moving at a forward velocity with either parallel or series elastic actuation at the hip and leg. In general it was best to have a parallel elastic actuator at the hip, and a series elastic actuator at the leg. In the third design question, I asked if there is an energetic benefit to having an articulated spinal joint instead of a rigid spinal joint in a quadrupedal legged robot. I found that the answer was gait dependent. For symmetrical gaits, such as walking and trotting, the rigid and articulated spine models have similar energetic economy. For asymmetrical gaits, such as bounding and galloping, the articulated spine led to significant energy savings at high speeds. The combination of the above studies readily presents a methodology for simultaneously optimizing for motion and morphology in legged robots. Aside from giving insight into these specific design questions, the technique can also be extended to a variety of other design questions.     Energetics and Passive Dynamics of Quadruped Robot Planar Running Gaits

    Quadruped robots find application in military for load carrying over uneven terrain, humanitarian de-mining, and search and rescue missions. The energy required for quadruped robot locomotion needs to be supplied from on-board energy source which can be either electrical batteries or fuels such as gasolene/diesel. The range and duration of missions very much depend on the amount of energy carried, which is highly limited. Hence, energy efficiency is of paramount importance in building quadruped robots. Study of energy efficiency in quadruped robots not only helps in efficient design of quadruped robots, but also helps understand the biomechanics of quadrupedal animals. This thesis focuses on the energy efficiency of planar running gaits and presents: (a) derivation of cost of transport expressions for trot and bounding gaits, (b) advantages of articulated torso over rigid torso for quadruped robot, (c) symmetry based control laws for passive dynamic bounding and design for inherent stability, and (d) effect of asymmetry in zero-energy bounding gaits

    In the deliverable 3.2 we presented how the morphological computing ap- proach can significantly facilitate the control strategy in several scenarios, e.g. quadruped locomotion, bipedal locomotion and reaching. In particular, the Kitty experimental platform is an example of the use of morphological computation to allow quadruped locomotion. In this deliverable we continue with the simulation studies on the application of the different morphological computation strategies to control a robotic system

    Exploring Passive Dynamics in Legged Locomotion

    A common observation among legged animals is that they move their limbs differently as they change their speed. The observed distinct patterns of limb movement are usually referred to as different gaits. Experiments with humans and mammals have shown that switching between different gaits as locomotion speed changes, enables energetically more economical locomotion. However, it still remains unclear why animals with very different morphologies use similar gaits, where these gaits come from, and how they are related. This dissertation approaches these questions by exploring the natural passive dynamic motions of a range of simplified mechanical models of legged locomotion. Recent research has shown that a simple bipedal model with compliant legs and a single set of parameters can match ground reaction forces of both human walking and running. As first contribution of this dissertation, this concept is extended to quadrupeds. A unified model is developed to reproduce many quadrupedal gaits by only varying the initial states of a motion. In addition, the model parameters are optimized to match the experimental data of real horses, as measured by an instrumented treadmill. It is shown that the proposed model is able to not only create similar kinematic motion trajectories, but can also explain the ground reaction forces of real horses moving with different gaits. In order to reveal the mechanical contribution to gaits, the simplistic bipedal and quadrupedal models are then augmented to have passive swing leg motions by including torsional springs at the hip joints. Through a numerical continuation of periodic motions, this work shows that a wide range of gaits emerges from a simple bouncing-in-place motion starting with different footfall patterns. For both, bipedal and quadrupedal models, these gaits arise along one-dimensional manifolds of solutions with varying total energy. Through breaking temporal and spatial symmetries of the periodic motions, these manifolds bifurcate into distinct branches with various footfall sequences. That is, passive gaits are obtained as different oscillatory motions of a single mechanical system with a single set of parameters. By reproducing a variety of gaits as a manifestation of the passive dynamics of unified models, this work provides insights into the underlying dynamics of legged locomotion and may help design of more economical controllers for legged machines.PHDMechanical EngineeringUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.     Investigation of an Articulated Spine in a Quadruped Robotic System.

    This research quantitatively analyzes a multi-body dynamics quadrupedal model with an articulated spine to evaluate the effects of speed and stride frequency on the energy requirements of the system. The articulated model consists of six planar, rigid bodies with a single joint in the middle of the torso. All joints are frictionless and mass is equally distributed in the limbs and torso. A model with the mid-torso joint removed, denoted as the rigid model, is used as a baseline comparison. Impulsive forces and torques are used to instantaneously reset the velocities at the phase transitions, allowing for ballistic trajectories during flight phases. Active torques at the haunch and shoulder joints are used during the stance phases to increase the model robustness. Simulations were conducted over effective high-speed gaits from 6.0 - 9.0 m/s. Stride frequencies were varied for both models. An evolutionary algorithm was employed to find plausible gaits based on biologically realistic constraints and bounds. The objective function for the optimization was cost of transport. Results show a decreasing cost of transport as speed increases for the articulated model with an optimal stride frequency of 3 s1^{-1} and an increasing cost of transport with increasing speed for the rigid model at an optimal stride frequency of 1.4 s1^{-1}, with a crossover in the cost of transport between the two models occurring at 7.0 m/s. The rigid model favors low speeds and stride frequencies at the cost of a large impulsive vertical force, driving the system through a long, gathered flight phase used to cover the long distances at the low stride frequencies. The articulated model prefers higher speeds and stride frequencies at the cost of a large impulsive torque in the back joint, akin to the contraction of abdomen muscles, preventing the collapse of the back. Thus, it is demonstrated that the inclusion of back articulation enables a more energetically efficient high-speed gait than a rigid back system, as seen in biological systems.     Affordances And Control Of A Spine Morphology For Robotic Quadrupedal Locomotion

    How does a robot\u27s body affect what it can do? This thesis explores the question with respect to a body morphology common to biology but rare in contemporary robotics: the presence of a bendable back. In this document, we introduce the Canid and Inu quadrupedal robots designed to test hypotheses related to the presence of a robotic sagittal-plane bending back (which we refer to as a ``spine morphology\u27\u27). The thesis then describes and quantifies several advantages afforded by this morphological design choice that can be evaluated against its added weight and complexity, and proposes control strategies to both deal with the increase in degrees-of-freedom from the spine morphology and to leverage an increase in agility to reactively navigate irregular terrain. Specifically, we show using the metric of ``specific agility\u27\u27 that a spine can provides a reservoir of elastic energy storage that can be rapidly converted to kinetic energy, that a spine can augment the effective workspace of the legs without diminishing their force generation capability, and that -- in cases of direct-drive or nearly direct-drive leg actuation -- the spine motors can contribute more work in stance than the same actuator weight used in the legs, but can do so without diminishing the platform\u27s proprioceptive capabilities. To put to use the agility provided by a suitably designed robotic platform, we introduce a formalism to approximate a set of transitional navigational tasks over irregular terrain such as leaping over a gap that lend itself to doubly reactive control synthesis. We also directly address the increased complexity introduced by the spine joint with a modular compositional control framework with nice stability properties that begins to offer insight into the role of spines for steady-state running. A central theme to both the reactive navigation and the modular control frameworks is that analytical tractability is achieved by approximating the modes driving the environmental interactions with constant-acceleration dynamics

    A contact-implicit direct trajectory optimization scheme for the study of legged maneuverability

    For legged robots to move safely in unpredictable environments, they need to be manoeuvrable, but transient motions such as acceleration, deceleration and turning have been the subject of little research compared to constant-speed gait. They are difficult to study for two reasons: firstly, the way they are executed is highly sensitive to factors such as morphology and traction, and secondly, they can potentially be dangerous, especially when executed rapidly, or from high speeds. These challenges make it an ideal topic for study by simulation, as this allows all variables to be precisely controlled, and puts no human, animal or robotic subjects at risk. Trajectory optimization is a promising method for simulating these manoeuvres, because it allows complete motion trajectories to be generated when neither the input actuation nor the output motion is known. Furthermore, it produces solutions that optimize a given objective, such as minimizing the distance required to stop, or the effort exerted by the actuators throughout the motion. It has consequently become a popular technique for high-level motion planning in robotics, and for studying locomotion in biomechanics. In this dissertation, we present a novel approach to studying motion with trajectory optimization, by viewing it more as “trajectory generation” – a means of generating large quantities of synthetic data that can illuminate the differences between successful and unsuccessful motion strategies when studied in aggregate. One distinctive feature of this approach is the focus on whole-body models, which capture the specific morphology of the subject, rather than the highly-simplified “template” models that are typically used. Another is the use of “contact-implicit” methods, which allow an appropriate footfall sequence to be discovered, rather than requiring that it be defined upfront. Although contact-implicit methods are not novel, they are not widely-used, as they are computationally demanding, and unnecessary when studying comparatively-predictable constant speed locomotion. The second section of this dissertation describes innovations in the formulation of these trajectory optimization problems as nonlinear programming problems (NLPs). This “direct” approach allows these problems to be solved by general-purpose, open-source algorithms, making it accessible to scientists without the specialized applied mathematics knowledge required to solve NLPs.     Using learning algorithms to develop dynamic gaits for legged robots

    Thesis (S.M.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Aeronautics and Astronautics, 2006.Includes bibliographical references (p. 129-134).As more legged robots have begun to be developed for their obvious advantages in overall maneuverability and mobility over rough terrain and difficult obstacles, their shortcomings over flat terrain have become more apparent. These robots plod along at extremely low speeds even when the ground is flat and level due to the fact that virtually all legged robots use a very stable, very slow walking gait to move, regardless of whether the ground is flat or rough. The simplest way of solving this problem is to use the same method as legged animals: simply change the gait from a walk to a faster more dynamic gait in order to increase the robot's speed. It would be extremely useful if legged robots were capable of moving across flat ground at high velocities while still retaining their ability to cross extremely rough or broken ground. Unfortunately, dynamic gaits are quite difficult to program by hand and only minimal research has been done on them. This thesis evaluates the use of two different types of learning algorithms (a genetic algorithm and a modified gradient-climbing reinforcement learning algorithm) as applied to the problem of developing dynamic gaits for a simulation of the Sony Aibo robot.(cont.) The two algorithms are tested using a random starting population and a high-fitness starting population and the results from both tests are compared. The research focuses on three different types of dynamic gaits: the trot, the canter, and the gallop. The efficiencies of the learned gaits are compared to each other in order to try to determine the best type of high-speed gait for use on the Aibo robot. Problems with the design of the Aibo robot as related to performing dynamic gaits are also identified and solutions are proposed.by Brian Schaaf.S.M
