    The Effect of Application Ambidexterity on Firm Agility

    Firm agility is quickly becoming an essential capability for companies to effectively compete in hypercompetitiveenvironments. At the same time, firms are using applications that enable close integration coupled with an increased ability toreconfigure processes. Such applications should manifest a balance between integration and reconfigurability. This is theconcept of applications ambidexterity. The IS literature has selectively focused on either integration or reconfigurability. Byfocusing on only one characteristic we have been unable to understand the IT - agility relation. Research suggests thatintegration and reconfigurability alone cannot explain the true nature of the IT - agility relation. This conceptual paperattempts to understand the complementary effects of integration and reconfigurability on firm agility. It contributes to theliterature by theorizing the role of IT application ambidexterity on firm agility through the mediating variables of knowledgeexploration, knowledge exploitation and process adaptability

    Dynamic supply chain capabilities: how market sensing, supply chain agility and adaptability affect supply chain ambidexterity

    Purpose: This paper positions market sensing, supply chain agility and supply chain adaptability as a coherent cluster of dynamic supply chain capabilities. The purpose of the paper is to understand how dynamic supply chain capabilities interrelate and their effect on supply chain ambidexterity. Design/methodology/approach: Based on a survey of Pakistani manufacturing firms, a theoretically-derived model was tested in a structural equation model. Findings: The results of the study show that a market-sensing capability is an antecedent of supply chain agility and supply chain adaptability. Furthermore, supply chain agility, directly, and supply chain adaptability, indirectly, affect supply chain ambidexterity. Supply chain agility therefore mediates the relationship between supply chain adaptability and supply chain ambidexterity. Originality/value: The contribution of this study lies in: (1) identifying dynamic capability clusters relevant for achieving supply chain ambidexterity;(2) evaluating performance implications of dynamic capabilities in the supply chain, specifically supply chain agility and adaptability; and (3) proposing a unique measurement of supply chain ambidexterity in the light supply chain theory, and empirically evaluating the relationship between dynamic capabilities and supply chain ambidexterity

    Ambidexterity in Information Systems Research: Overview of Conceptualizations, Antecedents, and Outcomes

    Organizations that are not efficient and innovative today quickly become irrelevant tomorrow. Ambidexterity (i.e., simultaneously conducting two seemingly contradicting activities, such as exploitation and exploration) helps organizations to overcome this challenge and, hence, has become increasingly popular with manifold applications in information systems (IS) research. However, we lack a systematic understanding of ambidexterity research, its research streams, and their future trajectory. Hence, we conduct a systematic literature review on ambidexterity in IS research and identify six distinct research streams that use an ambidexterity lens: IT-enabled organizational ambidexterity, ambidextrous IT capability, ambidexterity in IS development, ambidextrous IS strategy, ambidextrous inter-organizational relationships, and organizational ambidexterity in IS. We present the current state of research in each stream. More so, we comprehensively overview application areas, conceptualizations, antecedents for, and outcomes of ambidexterity. Hence, this study contributes to the emergent theme of ambidexterity in IS research

    The impacts of middle managers’ ambidexterity, continuous improvement, and organizational agility on business performance: a knowledge-based view

    Purpose: Using the knowledge-based view as the theoretical lens, this study aims to assess the effect of middle managers’ ambidexterity, continuous improvement and organizational agility on the business performance within the manufacturing and service industries. Design/methodology/approach: Quantitative survey was carried out using questionnaire whose data were collected from 197 middle managers’ responses collected in 2021. Structural Equation Modeling was used to analyze the direct and mediation relationships. Findings: The results demonstrated that the relationship between middle managers’ ambidexterity and business performance was insignificant but fully mediated by continuous improvement capacity and organizational agility. In both manufacturing and service sectors, our research also confirmed that middle managers have an important role in building continuous improvement capacity and organizational agility. The interchange between exploration and exploitation capabilities is an important competency that today’s middle managers should have. Originality/value: This study is amongst the first to investigate the phenomenon of middle managers’ ambidexterity in both manufacturing and service sectors from the knowledge-based view theory.     From big data to big performance – exploring the potential of big data for enhancing public organizations’ performance : a systematic literature review

    This article examines the possibilities for increasing organizational performance in the public sector using Big Data by conducting a systematic literature review. It includes the results of 36 scientific articles published between January 2012 and July 2019. The results show a tendency to explain the relationship between big data and organizational performance through the Resource-Based View of the Firm or the Dynamic Capabilities View, arguing that perfor-mance improvement in an organization stems from unique capabilities. In addition, the results show that Big Data performance improvement is influenced by better organizational decision making. Finally, it identifies three dimensions that seem to play a role in this process: the human dimension, the organizational dimension, and the data dimension. From these findings, implications for both practice and theory are derived

    The Role of IT Application Orchestration Capability in Improving Agility and Performance

    This paper investigates how IT application orchestration – a dynamic capability encapsulating a firm’s ability to refresh its application portfolio through a process of building, buying, and retiring IT applications – impacts firm performance. We propose a conceptual model in which the effect of IT application orchestration on firm performance is mediated by process agility. We further propose that a firm’s strategic orientation moderates the effect of IT application orchestration capability on process agility. Analysis of data from an international survey of IT executives supports our proposed hypotheses. This research contributes to the emergent literature on dynamic capabilities by proposing and testing a theory of how IT application orchestration capability affects agility and firm performance

    Sustainable supply chain management towards disruption and organizational ambidexterity:A data driven analysis

    Balancing sustainability and disruption of supply chains requires organizational ambidexterity. Sustainable supply chains prioritize efficiency and economies of scale and may not have sufficient redundancy to withstand disruptive events. There is a developing body of literature that attempts to reconcile these two aspects. This study gives a data-driven literature review of sustainable supply chain management trends toward ambidexterity and disruption. The critical review reveals temporal trends and geographic distribution of literature. A hybrid of data-driven analysis approach based on content and bibliometric analyses, fuzzy Delphi method, entropy weight method, and fuzzy decision-making trial and evaluation laboratory is used on 273 keywords and 22 indicators obtained based on the experts’ evaluation. The most important indicators are identified as supply chain agility, supply chain coordination, supply chain finance, supply chain flexibility, supply chain resilience, and sustainability. The regions show different tendencies compared with others. Asia and Oceania, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Africa are the regions needs improvement, while Europe and North America show distinct apprehensions on supply chain network design. The main contribution of this review is the identification of the knowledge frontier, which then leads to a discussion of prospects for future studies and practical industry implementation

By definition, firms experiencing high levels of inertia are unable to rapidly adapt and change as their needs dictate. This research addresses the question of “How can firms experiencing organizational inertia achieve ambidexterity?” In doing so, the role of IT as a digital options generator is explored and the concept of platform-enabled ambidexterity is introduced
