Ethical guidelines for nudging in information security & privacy

    Get PDF
There has recently been an upsurge of interest in the deployment of behavioural economics techniques in the information security and privacy domain. In this paper, we consider first the nature of one particular intervention, the nudge, and the way it exercises its influence. We contemplate the ethical ramifications of nudging, in its broadest sense, deriving general principles for ethical nudging from the literature. We extrapolate these principles to the deployment of nudging in information security and privacy. We explain how researchers can use these guidelines to ensure that they satisfy the ethical requirements during nudge trials in information security and privacy. Our guidelines also provide guidance to ethics review boards that are required to evaluate nudge-related research

The concepts of privacy and security are interrelated but the underlying meanings behind them may vary across different contexts. As information technology is becoming integrated in our lives, emerging information privacy and security issues have been catching both scholars’ and practitioners’ attention with the aim to address these issues. Examples of such issues include users’ role in information security breaches, online information disclosure and its impact on information privacy, and the collection and use of electronic data for surveillance. These issues are associated with and can be explained by various disciplines, such as psychology, law, business, economics, and information systems. This diversity of disciplines leads to an inclusive approach that subsumes interrelated constructs, such as security, anonymity, and surveillance, as a part of privacy in the current literature. However, privacy and security are distinct concepts. In this paper, we argue that to better understand the role of human factors in the context of information privacy and security, these two concepts need to be examined independently. We examine the two concepts and systematically present various nuances of information privacy and security

What Is Special in the Economics of Cybersecurity and Privacy?

One of the most popular questions in information security economics is whether there are any special features relating to privacy and cyber-security products and services that separate these from traditional goods, like apples or cars. This paper is a contribution to this discussion. First, different goods and services are compared to assess whether privacy and cyber-security are in fact different. Although basic, it is enlightening. We then discuss how economics treats key features and whether the observed differences justify any \u2018special\u2019 terminology

Research conducted for this survey explores the literature on economic issues in information security and review the advantages, drawbacks, and future research directions to set the scene that the assessment and analysis of the economics of information security publications followed it. Furthermore, we provide a structured discussion and overview of selected sets of works and highlight the models and theories in this field by organizing the presented works into six main categories namely information security investment, trust and privacy, network security, malicious program and malware economics, penetration testing and digital forensics and software security. Additionally, this survey aims to familiarize readers with major areas of this field already in hand to indicate the gaps and overlooked issues in the economics of security

    The impact of economics blogs

There is a proliferation of economics blogs, with increasing numbers of economists attracting large numbers of readers, yet little is known about the impact of this new medium. Using a variety of experimental and non-experimental techniques, this study quantifies some of their effects. First, links from blogs cause a striking increase in the number of abstract views and downloads of economics papers. Second, blogging raises the profile of the blogger (and his or her institution) and boosts their reputation above economists with similar publication records. Finally, a blog can transform attitudes about some of the topics it covers.Tertiary Education,E-Business,Economic Theory&Research,Information Security&Privacy,Agricultural Knowledge&Information Systems

    On measuring scientific influence

Bibliometric measures based on citations are widely used in assessing the scientific publication records of authors, institutions and journals. Yet currently favored measures lack a clear conceptual foundation and are known to have counter-intuitive properties. The authors propose a new approach that is grounded on a theoretical"influence function,"representing explicit prior beliefs about how citations reflect influence. They provide conditions for robust qualitative comparisons of influence -- conditions that can be implemented using readily-available data. An example is provided using the economics publication records of selected universities and the World Bank.Information Security&Privacy,Economic Theory&Research,Information and Records Management,Tertiary Education,Knowledge for Development
