3D ShapeNets: A Deep Representation for Volumetric Shapes
3D shape is a crucial but heavily underutilized cue in today's computer
vision systems, mostly due to the lack of a good generic shape representation.
With the recent availability of inexpensive 2.5D depth sensors (e.g. Microsoft
Kinect), it is becoming increasingly important to have a powerful 3D shape
representation in the loop. Apart from category recognition, recovering full 3D
shapes from view-based 2.5D depth maps is also a critical part of visual
understanding. To this end, we propose to represent a geometric 3D shape as a
probability distribution of binary variables on a 3D voxel grid, using a
Convolutional Deep Belief Network. Our model, 3D ShapeNets, learns the
distribution of complex 3D shapes across different object categories and
arbitrary poses from raw CAD data, and discovers hierarchical compositional
part representations automatically. It naturally supports joint object
recognition and shape completion from 2.5D depth maps, and it enables active
object recognition through view planning. To train our 3D deep learning model,
we construct ModelNet -- a large-scale 3D CAD model dataset. Extensive
experiments show that our 3D deep representation enables significant

Issues in the development of advance directives in mental health care
<i>Background</i>: Interest in advance directives in mental health care is growing internationally. There is no clear universal agreement as to what such an advance directive is or how it should function. <i>Aim</i>: To describe the range of issues embodied in the development of advance directives in mental health care. <i>Method</i>: The literature on advance directives is examined to highlight the pros and cons of different versions of advance directive. <i>Results</i>: Themes emerged around issues of terminology, competency and consent, the legal status of advance directives independent or collaborative directives and their content. Opinions vary between a unilateral legally enforceable instrument to a care plan agreed between patient and clinician. <i>Conclusion</i>: There is immediate appeal in a liberal democracy that values individual freedom and autonomy in giving weight to advance directives in mental health care. They do not, however, solve all the problems of enforced treatment and early access to treatment. Water infrastructure and social housing in Bogotá: an intersection between modern water management and social housing production
En la actualidad Bogotá afronta la presión de construir viviendas sociales en ecosistemas frágiles, áreas
rurales o zonas propensas a las inundaciones, y al mismo tiempo proteger estas áreas para asegurar la
capacidad de resiliencia del medio ambiente. Ante esta contradicción, la pregunta de investigación es:
¿Cómo se pueden modificar las tendencias de urbanización para crear una interacción que favorezca el
manejo sustentable del agua? Con el fin de responder esta pregunta ésta comunicación presenta un análisis
histórico de planes de alcantarillado y control hidráulico desarrollados desde 1990, junto con una revisión de
proyectos de vivienda social representativos, e investiga la interacción entre estos dos campos. El análisis
permite definir diferentes etapas en la transformación física del sistema hídrico que se basan en los cambios
universales de paradigma en la gestión del agua e ilustra diferentes construcciones socio-culturales en torno
a la naturaleza, además analiza la producción de vivienda en relación a la transformación del sistema
hídrico.Currently, Bogotá faces the pressure to continue to urbanize fragile ecosystems, rural lands and flood prone
areas with low-cost housing projects and simultaneously protect these areas to ensure environmental
resilience. Given this contradiction, the question is how urbanization trends could be reversed into a
constructive interplay with a revised water management? In order to that, this paper provides an historical
analysis of representative water infrastructure projects, urban plans and housing projects in Bogotá
developed after 1900 and investigates the interplays between this two realms. The analysis allows to define
different stages in the physical transformation of the water system that are based on universal paradigm
shifts in water management and illustrates different socio-cultural constructions around nature. It also
analysis the production of social housing in relation to the water system transformation
Surrogate Decision-Making Standards for Guardians: Theory and Reality
This Article examines the theoretical and practical implications of the substituted judgment and best interest standards for decision making by guardians. After providing an overview of the current decision-making standards in guardianship statutes, the Article synthesizes theoretical debates about what these standards mean and whether they provide an effective paradigm for surrogate decision makers. The authors then use new survey data to offer conclusions about the degree to which the substituted judgment and best interest standards are understood and meaningfully applied by guardians
Experimental evaluation of anti-stripping additives on porous asphalt mixtures
The open structure of porous asphalt mix influences its strength and durability against air, water and clogging materials. These factors cause loss of adhesion between binder-aggregate interface and loss of cohesion within the binder film. This could lead to stripping problem which contribute to premature failures as well as deterioration in the performance and service life of porous asphalt. Therefore, this study is aimed to evaluate the potential of diatomite as anti-stripping additives in porous asphalt and compared with hydrated lime and Ordinary Portland Cement (OPC). Field Emission Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) test and Energy Dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy analysis (EDX) were conducted to investigate the microstructure and chemical composition of the anti-stripping additives. A number of gyratory compacted samples of porous asphalt mixture with Malaysian gradation were prepared. Each sample was incorporated with 2% of anti-stripping additives as filler then mixed with polymer modified bitumen of PG76. The samples were measured for air voids content, permeability rate, resilient modulus and abrasion loss. The results indicate that samples prepared with hydrated lime show higher permeability rate and lower abrasion loss compared to samples with OPC and diatomite. However, the samples prepared with diatomite show enhanced resilient modulus compared to those with hydrated lime and OPC

VConv-DAE: Deep Volumetric Shape Learning Without Object Labels
With the advent of affordable depth sensors, 3D capture becomes more and more
ubiquitous and already has made its way into commercial products. Yet,
capturing the geometry or complete shapes of everyday objects using scanning
devices (e.g. Kinect) still comes with several challenges that result in noise
or even incomplete shapes. Recent success in deep learning has shown how to
learn complex shape distributions in a data-driven way from large scale 3D CAD
Model collections and to utilize them for 3D processing on volumetric
representations and thereby circumventing problems of topology and
tessellation. Prior work has shown encouraging results on problems ranging from
shape completion to recognition. We provide an analysis of such approaches and
discover that training as well as the resulting representation are strongly and
unnecessarily tied to the notion of object labels. Thus, we propose a full
convolutional volumetric auto encoder that learns volumetric representation
from noisy data by estimating the voxel occupancy grids. The proposed method
outperforms prior work on challenging tasks like denoising and shape
completion. We also show that the obtained deep embedding gives competitive
performance when used for classification and promising results for shape
interpolation

This article discusses Maryland\u27s Smart Growth and Neighborhood Conservation Initiative, the nation\u27s first statewide, incentive-based program to reduce the impact of urban sprawl. It has been used as a model by other states and espouses the notions that no growth is bad and the economy and environment are intertwined. Maryland attempts to change the bottom line of development decisions by making it more attractive and less costly to build in designated growth areas. The article identifies the next steps in Maryland\u27s Smart Growth initiative and concludes that Maryland and the United States must be successful in these and similar efforts to avoid a future of environmental and economic harm as a result of sprawl
