    Federated Embedded Systems – a review of the literature in related fields

    This report is concerned with the vision of smart interconnected objects, a vision that has attracted much attention lately. In this paper, embedded, interconnected, open, and heterogeneous control systems are in focus, formally referred to as Federated Embedded Systems. To place FES into a context, a review of some related research directions is presented. This review includes such concepts as systems of systems, cyber-physical systems, ubiquitous computing, internet of things, and multi-agent systems. Interestingly, the reviewed fields seem to overlap with each other in an increasing number of ways

    Forum Session at the First International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC03)

    The First International Conference on Service Oriented Computing (ICSOC) was held in Trento, December 15-18, 2003. The focus of the conference ---Service Oriented Computing (SOC)--- is the new emerging paradigm for distributed computing and e-business processing that has evolved from object-oriented and component computing to enable building agile networks of collaborating business applications distributed within and across organizational boundaries. Of the 181 papers submitted to the ICSOC conference, 10 were selected for the forum session which took place on December the 16th, 2003. The papers were chosen based on their technical quality, originality, relevance to SOC and for their nature of being best suited for a poster presentation or a demonstration. This technical report contains the 10 papers presented during the forum session at the ICSOC conference. In particular, the last two papers in the report ere submitted as industrial papers

    Agent‐based modeling of malware dynamics in heterogeneous environments

    The increasing convergence of power‐law networks such as social networking and peer‐to‐peer applications, web‐delivered applications, and mobile platforms makes today's users highly vulnerable to entirely new generations of malware that exploit vulnerabilities in web applications and mobile platforms for new infections, while using the power‐law connectivity for finding new victims. The traditional epidemic models based on assumptions of homogeneity, average‐degree distributions, and perfect‐mixing are inadequate to model this type of malware propagation. In this paper, we study four aspects crucial to modeling malware propagation: application‐level interactions among users of such networks , local network structure , user mobility , and network coordination of malware such as botnets . Since closed‐form solutions of malware propagation considering these aspects are difficult to obtain, we describe an open‐source, flexible agent‐based emulation framework that can be used by malware researchers for studying today's complex malware. The framework, called Agent‐Based Malware Modeling (AMM), allows different applications, network structure, network coordination, and user mobility in either a geographic or a logical domain to study various infection and propagation scenarios. In addition to traditional worms and viruses, the framework also allows modeling network coordination of malware such as botnets. The majority of the parameters used in the framework can be derived from real‐life network traces collected from a network, and therefore, represent realistic malware propagation and infection scenarios. As representative examples, we examine two well‐known malware spreading mechanisms: (i) a malicious virus such as Cabir spreading among the subscribers of a cellular network using Bluetooth and (ii) a hybrid worm that exploit email and file‐sharing to infect users of a social network. In both cases, we identify the parameters most important to the spread of the epidemic based upon our extensive simulation results. Copyright © 2011 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.     ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks: a literature review

    Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP) implementation is a complex and vibrant process, one that involves a combination of technological and organizational interactions. Often an ERP implementation project is the single largest IT project that an organization has ever launched and requires a mutual fit of system and organization. Also the concept of an ERP implementation supporting business processes across many different departments is not a generic, rigid and uniform concept and depends on variety of factors. As a result, the issues addressing the ERP implementation process have been one of the major concerns in industry. Therefore ERP implementation receives attention from practitioners and scholars and both, business as well as academic literature is abundant and not always very conclusive or coherent. However, research on ERP systems so far has been mainly focused on diffusion, use and impact issues. Less attention has been given to the methods used during the configuration and the implementation of ERP systems, even though they are commonly used in practice, they still remain largely unexplored and undocumented in Information Systems research. So, the academic relevance of this research is the contribution to the existing body of scientific knowledge. An annotated brief literature review is done in order to evaluate the current state of the existing academic literature. The purpose is to present a systematic overview of relevant ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks as a desire for achieving a better taxonomy of ERP implementation methodologies. This paper is useful to researchers who are interested in ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Results will serve as an input for a classification of the existing ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks. Also, this paper aims also at the professional ERP community involved in the process of ERP implementation by promoting a better understanding of ERP implementation methodologies and frameworks, its variety and history

    The ecological system of innovation: A new architectural framework for a functional evidence-based platform for science and innovation policy

    Models on innovation, for the most part, do not include a comprehensive and end-to-end view. Most innovation policy attention seems to be focused on the capacity to innovate and on input factors such as R&D investment, scientific institutions, human resources and capital. Such inputs frequently serve as proxies for innovativeness and are correlated with intermediate outputs such as patent counts and outcomes such as GDP per capita. While this kind of analysis is generally indicative of innovative behaviour, it is less useful in terms of discriminating causality and what drives successful strategy or public policy interventions. This situation has led to the developing of new frameworks for the innovation system led by National Science and Technology Policy Centres across the globe. These new models of innovation are variously referred to as the National Innovation Ecosystem. There is, however, a fundamental question that needs to be answered: what elements should an innovation policy include, and how should such policies be implemented?     Mathematics as a Supporting Tool for Technological Management

    The necessity of production involving the applicability of mathematics in the management decision-making process stimulates the elaboration of this article. This approach seeks to develop under a new profile of Mathematical Science, now as another tool of technological management, while it allows to understand the diverse deductive paradigms of this knowledge of support to the administrative process. In this way, the general objective is to deal with the application of mathematics as a tool in technological management; (1), to evaluate the applicability of these tools in the management of small and medium enterprises (2), to propose a mathematical model that contributes to the innovation of the business enterprise (3). The theoretical foundation is in the Taxonomy of Bloom, prescribed for the development of abilities and cognitive attitudes of the individual. There will be no doubt that mathematical problem-solving procedures advance significantly, especially to the demands of complex solutions. The Content Analysis Method and related procedures apply to this task. As a result .... Therefore, the study of mathematical and statistical application, in addition to computer resources to identify the possible trend in the index of technological management, the present article states that mathematics as a tool has its widespread applicability within the most diverse types of technological management, regardless of their size and showing how mathematics is associated in different areas of knowledge as a trend for technological management, since it is still considered for some as a difficult element among managers

    A taxonomy for key performance indicators management

    In recent years, research on Key Performance Indicators (KPIs) management has grown exponentially, giving rise to a multitude of heterogeneous approaches addressing any aspect concerning it. In this paper, we plot the landscape of published works related with KPIs management, organizing and synthesizing them by means of a unified taxonomy that encompasses the aspects considered by other proposals, and it captures the overall characteristics of KPIs. Since most of the literature centers on the definition of KPIs, we mainly focus on such an aspect of KPIs management. Our work is intended to provide remarkable benefits such as enhancing the understanding of KPIs management, or helping users decide about the most suitable solution for their requirements
