    Multi Agent Systems in Logistics: A Literature and State-of-the-art Review

    Based on a literature survey, we aim to answer our main question: ñ€ƓHow should we plan and execute logistics in supply chains that aim to meet todayñ€ℱs requirements, and how can we support such planning and execution using IT?ñ€ Todayñ€ℱs requirements in supply chains include inter-organizational collaboration and more responsive and tailored supply to meet specific demand. Enterprise systems fall short in meeting these requirements The focus of planning and execution systems should move towards an inter-enterprise and event-driven mode. Inter-organizational systems may support planning going from supporting information exchange and henceforth enable synchronized planning within the organizations towards the capability to do network planning based on available information throughout the network. We provide a framework for planning systems, constituting a rich landscape of possible configurations, where the centralized and fully decentralized approaches are two extremes. We define and discuss agent based systems and in particular multi agent systems (MAS). We emphasize the issue of the role of MAS coordination architectures, and then explain that transportation is, next to production, an important domain in which MAS can and actually are applied. However, implementation is not widespread and some implementation issues are explored. In this manner, we conclude that planning problems in transportation have characteristics that comply with the specific capabilities of agent systems.     [EN] The increase in the complexity of supply chains requires greater efforts to align the activities of all its members in order to improve the creation of value of their products or services offered to customers. In general, the information is asymmetric; each member has its own objective and limitations that may be in conflict with other members. Operations managements face the challenge of coordinating activities in such a way that the supply chain as a whole remains competitive, while each member improves by cooperating.     A Systematic Literature Review on Innovative Technologies Adopted in Logistics Management

    Many innovative technologies have been successfully adopted in logistics and supply chain management processes to increase efficiency, reduce costs or enhance communication. In recent years, considerable attention from both practitioners and academics has been focused on evaluating the impacts of innovative technologies adoption. However, the current body of literature on technology adoption, implementation and evaluation in logistics is quite fragmented; thus, an updated and structured overview of the scientific literature in this field might be useful. To this end, this work presents a systematic literature review (SLR) that aims to increase the understanding of the trend toward new technologies in logistics and identify the main research trends and gaps. The principal research trends that emerged from the SLR involve the technologies, their evolution over time and their relationships with the research methodologies. The main literature gaps concern integration and communication, technology-adoption processes and differences between inbound and outbound logistics

    The impact of bidding aggregation levels on truckload rates

Using regression analysis, we developed a model to isolate and test the cost effects that influence line-haul rate for long-haul shipments. We have determined that aggregation of low-volume lanes from point-to-point lanes to aggregated lanes can provide costs savings when lanes with origins and destinations in close proximity to each other can be bundled. In addition, bidding out region-to-region lanes can supplement point-to-point lanes by reducing the need to turn to the spot market. The model shows that bundling lanes can provide significant cost savings to a shipper because contract lanes of any type are on average less costly than spot moves. Nevertheless, firms do not necessarily have the ability to reach these achievements individually. Therefore, establishing a collaboration with other organizations could help them in solving problems, which may not be solved individually. In this research, the relevance of collaboration in the forest products industry as well as possible business models to establish a log sort yard are investigated with the aim of giving potential investors, business analysts, and managers a detailed overview of the key business aspects of these business units. The first part of this research investigates the main drivers, benefits, facilitators, and challenges of collaborations in the forest products industry, in order to help firms identify the best-fit collaborative mechanisms for their particular collaborative initiative. A conceptual framework is elaborated to identify the various components affecting the collaboration mechanisms needed to create successful collaboration in the forest products industry. The second part of this research investigates the critical business aspects of establishing a log sort yard related to its specific goal and support collaboration. To reach this goal, the Business Model Canvas proposed by Osterwalder and Pigneur (2010) is applied to develop possible business models for log sort yards. Two different business models are proposed which may be useful to firms to analyze the business aspect of implementing a log sort yard. A strategic planning analysis (SWOT analysis) is developed to list the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats associated with these models

    BLOCKCHAINS FOR PAY-PER-USE BUSINESS MODELS: INSIGHTS FROM A DESIGN RESEARCH STUDY

    A blockchain features an immutable, encrypted, and distributed ledger that enables transactions even if trust and trusted intermediaries are absent. Despite research on their technological properties, few papers are on record to demonstrate (a) what business scenarios blockchains can enable and (b) under which circumstances they outperform rival technologies. This shortfall of design knowledge obscures blockchains’ value proposition, its conceptual limitations, and its positioning towards rival classes of IT artifacts. We set out to design a blockchain-based IS that enables pay-per-use business models for industrial equipment—a business model that suffers from high transaction costs and complex agency dilemma caused by asymmetric information. We demonstrate how smart contracts deployed in a blockchain can level these information asymmetries. However, we also find that blockchains will only outperform rival technologies if the business scenario fulfils a set of specific properties, narrowing down the scope of application scenarios for applying blockchains substantially

    Iterative Combinatorial Auction for Carrier Collaboration in Logistic Services

    In collaborative logistics, multiple carriers form a network to share their transportation capacities. Collaboration among carriers results in improved resource utilization and, therefore, reduced costs. In this thesis, we propose an auction-based model for carrier collaboration in transportation services. The model achieves carrier collaboration through facilitating the negotiation among carriers over a group of shipping orders required by one or a group of shippers. The negotiation is conducted through a combinatorial iterative auction mechanism with the objective of minimizing the carriers’ overall costs. We first present a centralized carrier collaboration problem model in which a central entity has all required information to compute an optimal solution. We then consider a more realistic game theoretic setting where auction-based mechanism is applied to deal with self-interests of carriers. Compared with one-shot auctions, the proposed iterative bidding framework has the properties of reducing carriers’ information revelation and accommodating dynamic changes during the bidding process. Experimental results show that the procurement cost performance and the quality of solutions computed using the proposed iterative auction model is close to that of the optimal solutions

    Agent-Based System Design for Service Process Scheduling: Challenges, Approaches and Opportunities

    Compared with traditional manufacturing scheduling, service process scheduling poses additional challenges attributable to the significant customer involvement in service processes. In services, there are typically no inventoried products, which make the service provider's capacity more sensitive to dynamic changes. Service process scheduling objectives are also more complicated due to the consideration of customer preferences, customer waiting costs and human resource costs. After describing the Unified Services Theory and analysing its scheduling implications, this paper reviews the research literature on service process scheduling system design with a particular emphasis on agent-based approaches. Major issues in agent-based service process scheduling systems design are discussed and research opportunities are identified. The survey of the literature reveals that despite of many domain-specific designs in agent-based service process scheduling, there is a lack of general problem formulations, classifications, solution frameworks, and test beds. Constructing these general models for service process scheduling system design will facilitate the collaboration of researchers in this area and guide the effective development of integrated service process scheduling systems
