    A Service-Oriented Approach for Network-Centric Data Integration and Its Application to Maritime Surveillance

    Maritime-surveillance operators still demand for an integrated maritime picture better supporting international coordination for their operations, as looked for in the European area. In this area, many data-integration efforts have been interpreted in the past as the problem of designing, building and maintaining huge centralized repositories. Current research activities are instead leveraging service-oriented principles to achieve more flexible and network-centric solutions to systems and data integration. In this direction, this article reports on the design of a SOA platform, the Service and Application Integration (SAI) system, targeting novel approaches for legacy data and systems integration in the maritime surveillance domain. We have developed a proof-of-concept of the main system capabilities to assess feasibility of our approach and to evaluate how the SAI middleware architecture can fit application requirements for dynamic data search, aggregation and delivery in the distributed maritime domain

In this context security, privacy, safety, trust have to be address by the product manufacturers through the life cycle of their products from design to the support processes. The IoT developments address the whole IoT spectrum - from devices at the edge to cloud and datacentres on the backend and everything in between, through ecosystems are created by industry, research and application stakeholders that enable real-world use cases to accelerate the Internet of Things and establish open interoperability standards and common architectures for IoT solutions.     Operationally Responsive Space (ORS): An Architecture and Enterprise Model for Adaptive Integration, Test and Logistics

    The capability to rapidly deploy tactical satellites to meet a Joint Force Commander\u27s immediate battlespace requirements is a well-documented joint capability need. Key U.S. strategic documentation cites the need for the capability to maintain persistent surveillance or an unblinking eye over battlespace and to rapidly reconstitute critical space capabilities to preserve situational awareness. The warfighter requires a tactical space-based deployment capability which employs a request to launch and operational deployment window of 90 to 120 days. This master\u27s thesis executed two (2) major areas of work: apply, and reinforce the Operationally Responsive Space (ORS) mission tasks using the Joint Capabilities Integration Development System (JCIDS) process; then based on capability gap data generated from the process, analyze and define the capability gap of an ORS Adaptive Integration, Test and Logistics (IT&L) process for payload to bus deployment to meet the identified time scales. This document recommends engineering solutions and processes for the ORS IT&L to-be state for this warfighter capability. The ORS adaptive IT&L CONOPS developed as part of this work focuses on the Tactical Satellite Rapid Deployment System (TSRDS), which is an adaptive integration, test and logistics capability that enables rapid and effective payload to bus integration to meet a 90- to 120-day warfighter window

    Privacy-Enhanced Dependable and Searchable Storage in a Cloud-of-Clouds

    In this dissertation we will propose a solution for a trustable and privacy-enhanced storage architecture based on a multi-cloud approach. The solution provides the necessary support for multi modal on-line searching operation on data that is always maintained encrypted on used cloud-services. We implemented a system prototype, conducting an experimental evaluation. Our results show that the proposal offers security and privacy guarantees, and provides efficient information retrieval capabilities without sacrificing precision and recall properties on the supported search operations. There is a constant increase in the demand of cloud services, particularly cloud-based storage services. These services are currently used by different applications as outsourced storage services, with some interesting advantages. Most personal and mobile applications also offer the user the choice to use the cloud to store their data, transparently and sometimes without entire user awareness and privacy-conditions, to overcome local storage limitations. Companies might also find that it is cheaper to outsource databases and keyvalue stores, instead of relying on storage solutions in private data-centers. This raises the concern about data privacy guarantees and data leakage danger. A cloud system administrator can easily access unprotected data and she/he could also forge, modify or delete data, violating privacy, integrity, availability and authenticity conditions. A possible solution to solve those problems would be to encrypt and add authenticity and integrity proofs in all data, before being sent to the cloud, and decrypting and verifying authenticity or integrity on data downloads. However this solution can be used only for backup purposes or when big data is not involved, and might not be very practical for online searching requirements over large amounts of cloud stored data that must be searched, accessed and retrieved in a dynamic way. Those solutions also impose high-latency and high amount of cloud inbound/outbound traffic, increasing the operational costs. Moreover, in the case of mobile or embedded devices, the power, computation and communication constraints cannot be ignored, since indexing, encrypting/decrypting and signing/verifying all data will be computationally expensive. To overcome the previous drawbacks, in this dissertation we propose a solution for a trustable and privacy-enhanced storage architecture based on a multi-cloud approach, providing privacy-enhanced, dependable and searchable support. Our solution provides the necessary support for dependable cloud storage and multi modal on-line searching operations over always-encrypted data in a cloud-of-clouds. We implemented a system prototype, conducting an experimental evaluation of the proposed solution, involving the use of conventional storage clouds, as well as, a high-speed in-memory cloud-storage backend. Our results show that the proposal offers the required dependability properties and privacy guarantees, providing efficient information retrieval capabilities without sacrificing precision and recall properties in the supported indexing and search operations

    The Rights and Rewards in Blended Institutional Repositories Project is funded by the Joint Information Systems Committee (JISC) under the Digital Repositories Programme. This represents a cooperative venture between the Department of Information Science (DIS), the Engineering Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning (engCETL) and the University Library. The two year project aims to establish a single Blended repository to meet the teaching and research needs of this institution. It will address the motivational issues facing depositors of teaching materials with a focus on the associated Rights and Rewards. This digital lifecycles study will identify the most appropriate materials for submission to the project’s demonstrator repository. This takes into account factors like: granularity, persistence and multimedia types that can be supported for both teaching and research materials. It also documents the existing lifecycles of these items and the tools and specifications needed within a repository frameworks to support these lifecycles. For example, it will identify appropriate granularity of teaching resources and appropriate methods for content packaging. The results of the study will help to identify which types of files are currently in use, which formats should be supported by the repository system ultimately selected for the demonstrator repository. This information is likely to be of benefit to other projects and institutions in the process of setting up an Institutional Repository (IR)

    Specification and implementation of metadata for secure image provenance information

    The booming of AI tools capable of modifying images has equipped fake media producers with strong tools in their arsenal. Complementary to the efforts of implementing fake media detectors, research organizations are designing a standardized way of describing the modification history of digital media in a cryptographically secure way, ensuring that this information cannot be tampered with. This thesis proposes a specification which focuses on JPEG images and specifies a data model based on the JPEG Universal Metadata Box Format (JUMBF) standard. Furthermore, it proposes the encryption of a subset of provenance metadata that could pose privacy-related risks to the users. Along with the specification, a library has been developed to manage provenance information of JPEG images. To that extent, a set of libraries that handle JUMBF information is required to be implemented. These libraries have been submitted as a proposed reference software contributing to the JUMBF standard
