Industrial automation platforms are experiencing a paradigm shift. New technologies are making their way in the area, including embedded real-time systems, standard local area networks like Ethernet, Wi-Fi and ZigBee, IP-based communication protocols, standard service oriented architectures (SOAs) and Web services. An automation system will be composed of flexible autonomous components with plug & play functionality, self configuration and diagnostics, and autonomic local control that communicate through standard networking technologies. However, the introduction of these new technologies raises important problems that need to be properly solved, one of these being the need to support real-time and quality-of-service (QoS) for real-time applications. This paper describes a SOA enhanced with real-time capabilities for industrial automation. The proposed architecture allows for negotiation of the QoS requested by clients from Web services, and provides temporal encapsulation of individual activities. This way, it is possible to perform an a priori analysis of the temporal behavior of each service, and to avoid unwanted interference among them. After describing the architecture, experimental results gathered on a real implementation of the framework (which leverages a soft real-time scheduler for the Linux kernel) are presented, showing the effectiveness of the proposed solution. The experiments were performed on simple case studies designed in the context of industrial automation applications

Mission Planner Algorithm for Urban Air Mobility Initial Performance Characterization

In this paper, an initial characterization was performed of the Mission Planner algorithm developed by NASA for Urban Air Mobility (UAM) operations research. The algorithm plans conflict-free trajectories for flights to support a given set of UAM passenger trips. The UAM trips are planned in an on-demand, first-come, first-served manner, such that any given trip is subject to the constraints imposed by previously planned trips. For this analysis, the mission planning algorithm considered only the trajectory constraints from previously-planned trips in one test condition and added vertiport constraints for the second test condition. The conflict and constraint resolution strategies used by the Mission Planner were characterized by their percentage contribution to planning iterations, their percentage effectiveness in those iterations, and their contributions to the departure delay applied to each UAM trips flight. With the exception of the climb and descent vertical speed strategies, most strategies showed reasonable or good performance in all test scenarios. In the test condition with vertipad constraints enabled, both the total number of iterations executed, and the number of flights that required planning iterations, was reduced for all scenarios. This was the result of the natural conditioning of the traffic achieved with scheduling and the additional information available to the Mission Planner from the vertiport scheduler. The next steps for this work will include improvements to the mission planning strategies and analyses with additional constraints and under other demand scenarios

A QoS registry for adaptive real-time service-oriented applications

Real-time service-oriented applications are charac- terized by Quality of Service (QoS) requirements that cannot be properly managed by using classical real-time systems methodologies. In dynamic environments the QoS management can effectively leverage adaptive techniques, that provide flexibility and do not require a complex offline analysis. In turn, such techniques make a massive use of on-line collected data regarding the application performance and the resource requirements. Moreover, a common issue for adaptive systems is the one of deciding the initial configuration of the application and/or the run-time environment at the time of service instantiation. In this paper, we propose a QoS registry for coping with these issues and supporting the configuration of proper scheduling parameters in real-time Service Oriented Architectures (SOAs). The registry permits to gather QoS data related to different functional behaviors of applications, to predict the future trend based on data already collected and to permanently store such data for an effective reuse at the time of future re-instantiations. We have also built an implementation of such registry, computed its overhead costs and performed some experiments for showing the effectiveness in auto-tuning resource allocations for providing QoS guarantees in a real-time SOA

A Model Based Approach on Multi-Agent System and Genetic Algorithm to Improve the Process Management in Service Oriented Architecture

Service oriented architecture is based on the provision of services. To enhance the performance of the systems by providing a better combination of services, it is necessary to extract more information compared to the one in the service registry. In this regard, the accomplished works have been focusing on the basic concepts of service-oriented architecture. The service composition is based on the information in service registry, provided by the service provider. Further, centralized combination with insufficient information does not meet the system performance requirements. This solution helps to facilitate resource distribution and reduces tasks of the central unit. In this paper, efforts have been made to use the agents in the proposed model to enhance the processes of a system. In the proposed model, agents have been used in order to extract and manage the essential information in service registry table. This information forms the basis of monitoring and selection of services. Agents are used for selecting and making efficient composite services. Finally, different communications and configuration mechanisms are implemented using multi-agent systems that can perform service-oriented architecture. Moreover, genetic algorithm is used to enhance architectural processes. In the proposed model, the genetic algorithm and multi-agent system has enhanced productivity of the system and its important quality attributes. The system runs in the international conference of computer society of Iran (ICCSI). Implementation of this model in the real environment and its comparison with its implementation on the prototype could be helpful to justify better efficiency and accuracy for future applications

This work was developed during a period where most of the optical management and provisioning system where manual and proprietary. This work contributed to the evolution of the state of the art of optical networks with new architectures and advanced virtual infrastructure services. The evolution of optical networks, and internet globally, have been very promising during the last decade. The impact of mobile technology, grid, cloud computing, HDTV, augmented reality and big data, among many others, have driven the evolution of optical networks towards current service technologies, mostly based on SDN (Software Defined Networking) architectures and NFV(Network Functions Virtualisation). Moreover, the convergence of IP/Optical networks and IT services, and the evolution of the internet and optical infrastructures, have generated novel service orchestrators and open source frameworks. In fact, technology has evolved that fast that none could foresee how important Internet is for our current lives. Said in other words, technology was forced to evolve in a way that network architectures became much more transparent, dynamic and flexible to the end users (applications, user interfaces or simple APIs). This Thesis exposes the work done on defining new architectures for Service Oriented Networks and the contribution to the state of the art. The research work is divided into three topics. It describes the evolution from a Network Resource Provisioning System to an advanced Service Plane, and ends with a new architecture that virtualized the optical infrastructure in order to provide coordinated, on-demand and dynamic services between the application and the network infrastructure layer, becoming an enabler for the new generation of cloud network infrastructures. The work done on defining a Network Resource Provisioning System established the first bases for future work on network infrastructure virtualization. The UCLP (User Light Path Provisioning) technology was the first attempt for Customer Empowered Networks and Articulated Private Networks. It empowered the users and brought virtualization and partitioning functionalities into the optical data plane, with new interfaces for dynamic service provisioning. The work done within the development of a new Service Plane allowed the provisioning of on-demand connectivity services from the application, and in a multi-domain and multi-technology scenario based on a virtual network infrastructure composed of resources from different infrastructure providers. This Service Plane facilitated the deployment of applications consuming large amounts of data under deterministic conditions, so allowing the networks behave as a Grid-class resource. It became the first on-demand provisioning system that at lower levels allowed the creation of one virtual domain composed from resources of different providers. The last research topic presents an architecture that consolidated the work done in virtualisation while enhancing the capabilities to upper layers, so fully integrating the optical network infrastructure into the cloud environment, and so providing an architecture that enabled cloud services by integrating the request of optical network and IT infrastructure services together at the same level. It set up a new trend into the research community and evolved towards the technology we use today based on SDN and NFV. Summing up, the work presented is focused on the provisioning of virtual infrastructures from the architectural point of view of optical networks and IT infrastructures, together with the design and definition of novel service layers. It means, architectures that enabled the creation of virtual infrastructures composed of optical networks and IT resources, isolated and provisioned on-demand and in advance with infrastructure re-planning functionalities, and a new set of interfaces to open up those services to applications or third parties.
