    Utilizing artificial intelligence in perioperative patient flow:systematic literature review

    Abstract. The purpose of this thesis was to map the existing landscape of artificial intelligence (AI) applications used in secondary healthcare, with a focus on perioperative care. The goal was to find out what systems have been developed, and how capable they are at controlling perioperative patient flow. The review was guided by the following research question: How is AI currently utilized in patient flow management in the context of perioperative care? This systematic literature review examined the current evidence regarding the use of AI in perioperative patient flow. A comprehensive search was conducted in four databases, resulting in 33 articles meeting the inclusion criteria. Findings demonstrated that AI technologies, such as machine learning (ML) algorithms and predictive analytics tools, have shown somewhat promising outcomes in optimizing perioperative patient flow. Specifically, AI systems have proven effective in predicting surgical case durations, assessing risks, planning treatments, supporting diagnosis, improving bed utilization, reducing cancellations and delays, and enhancing communication and collaboration among healthcare providers. However, several challenges were identified, including the need for accurate and reliable data sources, ethical considerations, and the potential for biased algorithms. Further research is needed to validate and optimize the application of AI in perioperative patient flow. The contribution of this thesis is summarizing the current state of the characteristics of AI application in perioperative patient flow.     Efficient Bayesian Planning

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a long-studied and yet very active field of research. The list of things differentiating humans from AI grows thinner but the dream of an artificial general intelligence remains elusive. Sequential Decision Making is a subfield of AI that poses a seemingly benign question ``How to act optimally in an unknown environment?\u27\u27. This requires the AI agent to learn about its environment as well as plan an action sequence given its current knowledge about it. The two common problem settings are partial observability and unknown environment dynamics. Bayesian planning deals with these issues by simultaneously defining a single planning problem which considers the simultaneous effects of an action on both learning and goal search. The technique involves dealing with infinite tree data structures which are hard to store but essential for computing the optimal plan. Finally, we consider the minimax setting where the Bayesian prior is chosen by an adversary and therefore a worst case policy needs to be found.In this thesis, we present novel Bayesian planning algorithms. First, we propose DSS (Deeper, Sparser Sampling) for the case of unknown environment dynamics. It is a meta-algorithm derived from a simple insight about the Bayes rule, which beats the state-of-the-art across the board from discrete to continuous state settings. A theoretical analysis provides a high probability bound on its performance. Our analysis is different from previous approaches in the literature in terms of problem formulation and formal guarantees. The result also contrasts with those of previous comparable BRL algorithms, which typically provide asymptotic convergence guarantees. Suitable Bayesian models and their corresponding planners are proposed for implementing the discrete and continuous versions of DSS. We then address the issue of partial observability via our second algorithm, FMP (Finite Memory Planner). This uses depth-dependent partitioning of the infinite planning tree. Experimental results demonstrate comparable performance to the current state-of-the-art for both discrete and continuous settings. Finally, we propose algorithms for finding the best policy for the worst case belief in the Minimax Bayesian setting

    Roblocks: An Educational System for AI Planning and Reasoning

    abstract: This research introduces Roblocks, a user-friendly system for learning Artificial Intelligence (AI) planning concepts using mobile manipulator robots. It uses a visual programming interface based on block-structured programming to make AI planning concepts easier to grasp for those who are new to robotics and AI planning. Users get to accomplish any desired tasks by dynamically populating puzzle shaped blocks encoding the robot’s possible actions, allowing them to carry out tasks like navigation, planning, and manipulation by connecting blocks instead of writing code. Roblocks has two levels, where in the first level users are made to re-arrange a jumbled set of actions of a plan in the correct order so that a given goal could be achieved. In the second level, they select actions of their choice but at each step only those actions pertaining to the current state are made available to them, thereby pruning down the vast number of possible actions and suggesting only the truly feasible and relevant actions. Both of these levels have a simulation where the user plan is executed. Moreover, if the user plan is invalid or fails to achieve the given goal condition then an explanation for the failure is provided in simple English language.     Towards Autonomous Selective Harvesting: A Review of Robot Perception, Robot Design, Motion Planning and Control

    This paper provides an overview of the current state-of-the-art in selective harvesting robots (SHRs) and their potential for addressing the challenges of global food production. SHRs have the potential to increase productivity, reduce labour costs, and minimise food waste by selectively harvesting only ripe fruits and vegetables. The paper discusses the main components of SHRs, including perception, grasping, cutting, motion planning, and control. It also highlights the challenges in developing SHR technologies, particularly in the areas of robot design, motion planning and control. The paper also discusses the potential benefits of integrating AI and soft robots and data-driven methods to enhance the performance and robustness of SHR systems. Finally, the paper identifies several open research questions in the field and highlights the need for further research and development efforts to advance SHR technologies to meet the challenges of global food production.     Nuclei & Glands Instance Segmentation in Histology Images: A Narrative Review

    Instance segmentation of nuclei and glands in the histology images is an important step in computational pathology workflow for cancer diagnosis, treatment planning and survival analysis. With the advent of modern hardware, the recent availability of large-scale quality public datasets and the community organized grand challenges have seen a surge in automated methods focusing on domain specific challenges, which is pivotal for technology advancements and clinical translation. In this survey, 126 papers illustrating the AI based methods for nuclei and glands instance segmentation published in the last five years (2017-2022) are deeply analyzed, the limitations of current approaches and the open challenges are discussed. Moreover, the potential future research direction is presented and the contribution of state-of-the-art methods is summarized. Further, a generalized summary of publicly available datasets and a detailed insights on the grand challenges illustrating the top performing methods specific to each challenge is also provided. Besides, we intended to give the reader current state of existing research and pointers to the future directions in developing methods that can be used in clinical practice enabling improved diagnosis, grading, prognosis, and treatment planning of cancer. To the best of our knowledge, no previous work has reviewed the instance segmentation in histology images focusing towards this direction.Comment: 60 pages, 14 figure

    A literature review of Artificial Intelligence applications in railway systems

    Nowadays it is widely accepted that Artificial Intelligence (AI) is significantly influencing a large number of domains, including railways. In this paper, we present a systematic literature review of the current state-of-the-art of AI in railway transport. In particular, we analysed and discussed papers from a holistic railway perspective, covering sub-domains such as maintenance and inspection, planning and management, safety and security, autonomous driving and control, revenue management, transport policy, and passenger mobility. This review makes an initial step towards shaping the role of AI in future railways and provides a summary of the current focuses of AI research connected to rail transport. We reviewed about 139 scientific papers covering the period from 2010 to December 2020. We found that the major research efforts have been put in AI for rail maintenance and inspection, while very limited or no research has been found on AI for rail transport policy and revenue management. The remaining sub-domains received mild to moderate attention. AI applications are promising and tend to act as a game-changer in tackling multiple railway challenges. However, at the moment, AI research in railways is still mostly at its early stages. Future research can be expected towards developing advanced combined AI applications (e.g. with optimization), using AI in decision making, dealing with uncertainty and tackling newly rising cybersecurity challenges

    Summary Report of The First International Competition on Computational Models of Argumentation

    Computational models of argumentation are an active research discipline within Artificial Intelligence that has grown since the beginning of the 1990s (Dung 1995). While still a young field when compared to areas such as SAT solving and Logic Programming, the argumentation community is very active, with a conference series (COMMA, which began in 2006) and a variety of workshops and special issues of journals. Argumentation has also worked its way into a variety of applications. For example, Williams et al. (2015) described how argumentation techniques are used for recommending cancer treatments, while Toniolo et al. (2015) detail how argumentation-based techniques can support critical thinking and collaborative scientific inquiry or intelligence analysis. Many of the problems that argumentation deals with are computationally difficult, and applications utilising argumentation therefore require efficient solvers. To encourage this line of research, we organised the First International Competition on Computational Models of Argumentation (ICCMA), with the intention of assessing and promoting state of the art solvers for abstract argumentation problems, and to identify families of challenging benchmarks for such solvers. The objective of ICCMA’15 is to allow researchers to compare the performance of different solvers systematically on common benchmarks and rules. Moreover, as witnessed by competitions in other AI disciplines such as planning and SAT solving, we see ICCMA as a new pillar of the community which provides information and insights on the current state of the art, and highlights future challenges and developments. This article summarises the first ICCMA held in 2015 (ICCMA’15). In this competition, solvers were invited to address standard decision and enumeration problems of abstract argumentation frameworks (Dunne and Wooldridge 2009). Solvers’ performance is evaluated based on their time taken to provide a correct solution for a problem; incorrect results were discarded.     APPLICATIONS AND PERCEIVED IMPACT OF ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN ACADEMIC LIBRARIES IN NIGERIA

    This paper expounds the application and perceived impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic libraries in Nigeria. Libraries especially in developing countries may become moribund in the 21 century unless they begin to harness new, smart and intelligent technologies for improved operations and service delivery. This research adopted a literature-based approach to x-ray the applications and perceived impact of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic libraries in Nigeria. Through a systematic analysis and review of literature, the study brought to limelight the current state of AI integration in academic libraries in Nigeria and its possible impact on library services, collections, users, professionals and general library operations and services. The application of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in academic libraries has the potential to revolutionize library operations and services. Some of the identifies AI tools include: Natural Language Recognition, Robotics, Big Data, Data Mining, Chatbot, Machine Learning, Pattern Recognition and Expert system. Findings from the study revealed that the application of AI in academic libraries have the potentials to increases productivity, improved customer satisfaction through personalization, easy availability and accessibility of information, easy collaboration and knowledge sharing, virtual assistance and chatbots, and ultimately increase overall operational effectiveness. This paper also explored some of the challenges associated with the application of AI technologies in academic libraries in Nigeria such as poor ICT skills and technical expertise, high initial costs of implementation, phobia for job displacement, epileptic power supply, poor maintenance culture, resistance to change, poor network connectivity, privacy and ethical implications, etc. To maximize the potential benefits of AI applications in academic libraries in Nigeria, it is crucial for these libraries to implement appropriate planning, guidelines and regulations on AI use as well as training and retraining of academic librarians to acquire the required ICT skills, knowledge and competence in order to adapt in the present digital and changing library environment
