    Relationship between primary liver hepatocellular carcinoma volumes on portal-venous phase CT imaging

    The liver is an important organ in the body. It is located under the rib cage on the right side. The liver performs many important functions, it processes food for nutrients that the body requires and also helps in the detoxification of harmful materials. Like any organ in the body, the liver is susceptible to diseases such as liver cancer. Liver cancer is the growth and spread of unhealthy cells of the liver. There are several risk factor for liver cancer, these are: Cirrhosis (scarring of the liver), long term hepatitis B and hepatitis C infection and diabetes patients with long term drinking problem. Hepatocellular Carcinoma is the most common form of liver cancer in adult population which begins in the main type of liver cell (hepatocyte). Because Hepatocellular carcinoma starts from the primary liver cell itself (hepatocytes), as such it is a primary liver cancer. About 30,000 Americans are diagnosed with primary liver cancer yearly, making it an important disease that plaques our society and therefore needs proper diagnosis. In clinical evaluation of primary liver cancer such as HCC, the use of medical imaging technology has been commonplace. Most medical facilities across the country and globally typically use Computed Tomography (CT) and/or Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) in the diagnosis and treatment follow up of Hepatocellular carcinoma. The medical imaging devices are used to determine the extent and volume of the tumor of the cancerous liver cells. In clinical trials involving the imaging of HCC tumors, the typical protocol used in the CT imaging of HCC involves the use of contrast enhanced dual phase acquisition. This approach is based on the physiology of the blood flow through the liver. Since HCC tumors are hypervascular in nature, it would thus be more apparent in the arterial phase of an acquired CT image. The aforementioned characteristic was tested with a volume paradigm which measure and compare the volume of both the arterial phase and portal venous phase acquired images in the experiment. Overall this study helps in furthering goals to reduce the patient dose from the x-ray tubes during clinical trials. The results of the experiments (n = 19, t = 0.67, p = 0.26), indicates no significant difference between the volume of the HCC tumor images acquired both in the AP and PVP

    The cleanroom case study in the Software Engineering Laboratory: Project description and early analysis

    This case study analyzes the application of the cleanroom software development methodology to the development of production software at the NASA/Goddard Space Flight Center. The cleanroom methodology emphasizes human discipline in program verification to produce reliable software products that are right the first time. Preliminary analysis of the cleanroom case study shows that the method can be applied successfully in the FDD environment and may increase staff productivity and product quality. Compared to typical Software Engineering Laboratory (SEL) activities, there is evidence of lower failure rates, a more complete and consistent set of inline code documentation, a different distribution of phase effort activity, and a different growth profile in terms of lines of code developed. The major goals of the study were to: (1) assess the process used in the SEL cleanroom model with respect to team structure, team activities, and effort distribution; (2) analyze the products of the SEL cleanroom model and determine the impact on measures of interest, including reliability, productivity, overall life-cycle cost, and software quality; and (3) analyze the residual products in the application of the SEL cleanroom model, such as fault distribution, error characteristics, system growth, and computer usage

    En los últimos tiempos, las técnicas de procesado de señal han ido ganando importancia dentro de numerosas aplicaciones industriales. Estos enfoques orientados al procesado de señal están abriendo nuevas perspectivas en muchas áreas del ámbito agro-industrial, destacando entre ellas la monitorización de maquinaria. El principal objetivo de esta tesis es el diseño, implementación y evaluación de esquemas de procesado de señal específicos que permitan la monitorización de equipamiento agro-industrial en tres sentidos: mantenimiento predictivo, seguimiento de vehículos y equipos de medida. Las técnicas propuestas en esta tesis contribuyen al estado del arte, expandiendo o extendiendo técnicas existentes, e incluso proponiendo esquemas completamente novedosos. La metodología seguida a lo largo de esta tesis, con objeto de alcanzar los objetivos marcados, se puede dividir en cinco etapas: revisión del estado del arte, formulación de hipótesis, desarrollo y evaluación, análisis de resultados y publicación de resultados. En esta tesis se han abordado tres problemas agro-industriales diferentes: mantenimiento predictivo de una cosechadora agrícola, seguimiento cinemático de un vehículo y monitorización del flujo a través de cada una de las boquillas en un pulverizador agrícola. Tres características principales de los métodos propuestos destacan sobre el resto. La primera es que todos los métodos satisfacen los objetivos con una precisión suficiente. La segunda característica es que todos los métodos propuestos conducen a sistemas que son asequibles y baratos. La última característica es la optimización de los métodos, que conduce a menores necesidades computacionales en comparación con otros enfoques existentes. Esta última propiedad hace que estos métodos puedan emplearse en aplicaciones con requisitos de tiempo real. Los resultados obtenidos en esta tesis ofrecen muestras de la capacidad de monitorizar maquinaria agro-industrial ofrecida por los métodos de procesado de señal. Hay dos conclusiones principales que se puede extraer de estos resultados. La primera es que las técnicas de procesado de señal pueden obtener información útil relativa a los problemas agro-industriales abordados.
