    In pursuit of linear complexity in discrete and computational geometry

    Many computational problems arise naturally from geometric data. In this thesis, we consider three such problems: (i) distance optimization problems over point sets, (ii) computing contour trees over simplicial meshes, and (iii) bounding the expected complexity of weighted Voronoi diagrams. While these topics are broad, here the focus is on identifying structure which implies linear (or near linear) algorithmic and descriptive complexity. The first topic we consider is in geometric optimization. More specifically, we define a large class of distance problems, for which we provide linear time exact or approximate solutions. Roughly speaking, the class of problems facilitate either clustering together close points (i.e. netting) or throwing out outliers (i.e pruning), allowing for successively smaller summaries of the relevant information in the input. A surprising number of classical geometric optimization problems are unified under this framework, including finding the optimal k-center clustering, the kth ranked distance, the kth heaviest edge of the MST, the minimum radius ball enclosing k points, and many others. In several cases we get the first known linear time approximation algorithm for a given problem, where our approximation ratio matches that of previous work. The second topic we investigate is contour trees, a fundamental structure in computational topology. Contour trees give a compact summary of the evolution of level sets on a mesh, and are typically used on massive data sets. Previous algorithms for computing contour trees took Θ(n log n) time and were worst-case optimal. Here we provide an algorithm whose running time lies between Θ(nα(n)) and Θ(n log n), and varies depending on the shape of the tree, where α(n) is the inverse Ackermann function. In particular, this is the first algorithm with O(nα(n)) running time on instances with balanced contour trees. Our algorithmic results are complemented by lower bounds indicating that, up to a factor of α(n), on all instance types our algorithm performs optimally. For the final topic, we consider the descriptive complexity of weighted Voronoi diagrams. Such diagrams have quadratic (or higher) worst-case complexity, however, as was the case for contour trees, here we push beyond worst-case analysis. A new diagram, called the candidate diagram, is introduced, which allows us to bound the complexity of weighted Voronoi diagrams arising from a particular probabilistic input model. Specifically, we assume weights are randomly permuted among fixed Voronoi sites, an assumption which is weaker than the more typical sampled locations assumption. Under this assumption, the expected complexity is shown to be near linear

    Geometric algorithms for geographic information systems

    A geographic information system (GIS) is a software package for storing geographic data and performing complex operations on the data. Examples are the reporting of all land parcels that will be flooded when a certain river rises above some level, or analyzing the costs, benefits, and risks involved with the development of industrial activities at some place. A substantial part of all activities performed by a GIS involves computing with the geometry of the data, such as location, shape, proximity, and spatial distribution. The amount of data stored in a GIS is usually very large, and it calls for efficient methods to store, manipulate, analyze, and display such amounts of data. This makes the field of GIS an interesting source of problems to work on for computational geometers. In chapters 2-5 of this thesis we give new geometric algorithms to solve four selected GIS problems.These chapters are preceded by an introduction that provides the necessary background, overview, and definitions to appreciate the following chapters. The four problems that we study in chapters 2-5 are the following: Subdivision traversal: we give a new method to traverse planar subdivisions without using mark bits or a stack. Contour trees and seed sets: we give a new algorithm for generating a contour tree for d-dimensional meshes, and use it to determine a seed set of minimum size that can be used for isosurface generation. This is the first algorithm that guarantees a seed set of minimum size. Its running time is quadratic in the input size, which is not fast enough for many practical situations. Therefore, we also give a faster algorithm that gives small (although not minimal) seed sets. Settlement selection: we give a number of new models for the settlement selection problem. When settlements, such as cities, have to be displayed on a map, displaying all of them may clutter the map, depending on the map scale. Choices have to be made which settlements are selected, and which ones are omitted. Compared to existing selection methods, our methods have a number of favorable properties. Facility location: we give the first algorithm for computing the furthest-site Voronoi diagram on a polyhedral terrain, and show that its running time is near-optimal. We use the furthest-site Voronoi diagram to solve the facility location problem: the determination of the point on the terrain that minimizes the maximal distance to a given set of sites on the terrain

    Computational Topology Methods for Shape Modelling Applications

    This thesis deals with computational topology, a recent branch of research that involves both mathematics and computer science, and tackles the problem of discretizing the Morse theory to functions defined on a triangle mesh. The application context of Morse theory in general, and Reeb graphs in particular, deals with the analysis of geometric shapes and the extraction of skeletal structures that synthetically represents shape, preserving the topological properties and the main morphological characteristics. Regarding Computer Graphics, shapes, that is a one-, two- or higher- dimensional connected, compact space having a visual appearance, are typically approximated by digital models. Since topology focuses on the qualitative properties of spaces, such as the connectedness and how many and what type of holes it has, topology is the best tool to describe the shape of a mathematical model at a high level of abstraction. Geometry, conversely, is mainly related to the quantitative characteristics of a shape. Thus, the combination of topology and geometry creates a new generation of tools that provide a computational description of the most representative features of the shape along with their relationship. Extracting qualitative information, that is the information related to semantic of the shape and its morphological structure, from discrete models is a central goal in shape modeling. In this thesis a conceptual model is proposed which represents a given surface based on topological coding that defines a sketch of the surface, discarding irrelevant details and classifying its topological type. The approach is based on Morse theory and Reeb graphs, which provide a very useful shape abstraction method for the analysis and structuring of the information contained in the geometry of the discrete shape model. To fully develop the method, both theoretical and computational aspects have been considered, related to the definition and the extension of the Reeb graph to the discrete domain. For the definition and automatic construction of the conceptual model, a new method has been developed that analyzes and characterizes a triangle mesh with respect to the behavior of a real and at least continuous function defined on the mesh. The proposed solution handles also degenerate critical points, such as non-isolated critical points. To do that, the surface model is characterized using a contour-based strategy, recognizing critical areas instead of critical points and coding the evolution of the contour levels in a graph-like structure, named Extended Reeb Graph, (ERG), which is a high-level abstract model suitable for representing and manipulating piece-wise linear surfaces. The descriptive power of the (ERG) has been also augmented with the introduction of geometric information together with the topological ones, and it has been also studied the relation between the extracted topological and morphological features with respect to the real characteristics of the surface, giving and evaluation of the dimension of the discarded details. Finally, the effectiveness of our description framework has been evaluated in several application contexts
