The Case for Using Simulation to Validate Event-B Specifications

    Get PDF
International audienceThis paper addresses the validation of formal spec- ifications in Event-B through the execution of the specification. Current tools for Event-B, animators and translators, can execute only a restricted set of specifications. So, we propose a third technique, simu- lation, in which users and tools co-operate to produce an executable instance of the model. After a short presentation of Event-B and our simulation framework, JeB, we show how to use it on two reasonably com- plex specifications. Observations and analysis from the point of view of validation are presented and discussed.

Manufacturing System Lean Improvement Design Using Discrete Event Simulation

Lean manufacturing (LM) has been used widely in the past for the continuous improvement of existing production systems. A Lean Assessment Tool (LAT) is used for assessing the overall performance of lean practices within a system, while a Discrete Event Simulation (DES) can be used for the optimization of such systems operations. Lean improvements are typically suggested after a LAT has been deployed, but validation of such improvements is rarely carried out. In the present article a methodology is presented that uses DES to model lean practices within a manufacturing system. Lean improvement scenarios are then be simulated and investigated prior to implementation, thereby enabling a systematic design of lean improvements

SDL based validation of a node monitoring protocol

Mobile ad hoc network is a wireless, self-configured, infrastructureless network of mobile nodes. The nodes are highly mobile, which makes the application running on them face network related problems like node failure, link failure, network level disconnection, scarcity of resources, buffer degradation, and intermittent disconnection etc. Node failure and Network fault are need to be monitored continuously by supervising the network status. Node monitoring protocol is crucial, so it is required to test the protocol exhaustively to verify and validate the functionality and accuracy of the designed protocol. This paper presents a validation model for Node Monitoring Protocol using Specification and Description Llanguage (SDL) using both Static Agent (SA) and Mobile Agent (MA). We have verified properties of the Node Monitoring Protocol (NMP) based on the global states with no exits, deadlock states or proper termination states using reachability graph. Message Sequence Chart (MSC) gives an intuitive understanding of the described system behavior with varying node density and complex behavior etc.Comment: 16 pages, 24 figures, International Conference of Networks, Communications, Wireless and Mobile 201

Generating a Performance Stochastic Model from UML Specifications

Since its initiation by Connie Smith, the process of Software Performance Engineering (SPE) is becoming a growing concern. The idea is to bring performance evaluation into the software design process. This suitable methodology allows software designers to determine the performance of software during design. Several approaches have been proposed to provide such techniques. Some of them propose to derive from a UML (Unified Modeling Language) model a performance model such as Stochastic Petri Net (SPN) or Stochastic process Algebra (SPA) models. Our work belongs to the same category. We propose to derive from a UML model a Stochastic Automata Network (SAN) in order to obtain performance predictions. Our approach is more flexible due to the SAN modularity and its high resemblance to UML' state-chart diagram

    SBML models and MathSBML

MathSBML is an open-source, freely-downloadable Mathematica package that facilitates working with Systems Biology Markup Language (SBML) models. SBML is a toolneutral,computer-readable format for representing models of biochemical reaction networks, applicable to metabolic networks, cell-signaling pathways, genomic regulatory networks, and other modeling problems in systems biology that is widely supported by the systems biology community. SBML is based on XML, a standard medium for representing and transporting data that is widely supported on the internet as well as in computational biology and bioinformatics. Because SBML is tool-independent, it enables model transportability, reuse, publication and survival. In addition to MathSBML, a number of other tools that support SBML model examination and manipulation are provided on the sbml.org website, including libSBML, a C/C++ library for reading SBML models; an SBML Toolbox for MatLab; file conversion programs; an SBML model validator and visualizer; and SBML specifications and schemas. MathSBML enables SBML file import to and export from Mathematica as well as providing an API for model manipulation and simulation

    Automatic Test Generation for Space

The European Space Agency (ESA) uses an engine to perform tests in the Ground Segment infrastructure, specially the Operational Simulator. This engine uses many different tools to ensure the development of regression testing infrastructure and these tests perform black-box testing to the C++ simulator implementation. VST (VisionSpace Technologies) is one of the companies that provides these services to ESA and they need a tool to infer automatically tests from the existing C++ code, instead of writing manually scripts to perform tests. With this motivation in mind, this paper explores automatic testing approaches and tools in order to propose a system that satisfies VST needs
