    Networked electronic equipments using the IEEE 1451 standard - visioway: a case study in the ITS area

    The concept of Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITSs) has been recently introduced to define modern embedded systems with enhanced digital connectivity, combining people, vehicles, and public infrastructure. The smart transducer concept, on the other hand, has been established by the IEEE 1451 standard to simplify the scalability of networked electronic equipments. The synergy of both concepts will establish a new paradigm in the near future of the ITS area. The purpose of this paper is to analyze the integration of electronic equipments into intelligent road-traffic management systems by using the smart transducer concept. An automated video processing sensor for road-traffic monitoring applications is integrated into an ITS network as a case study. The impact of the IEEE 1451 standard in the development and performance of ITS equipments is analyzed through its application to this video-based system, commercialized under the name VisioWa

    A service-oriented architecture for scientific computing on cloud infrastructures

    This paper describes a service-oriented architecture that eases the process of scientific application deployment and execution in IaaS Clouds, with a focus on High Throughput Computing applications. The system integrates i) a catalogue and repository of Virtual Machine Images, ii) an application deployment and configuration tool, iii) a meta-scheduler for job execution management and monitoring. The developed system significantly reduces the time required to port a scientific application to these computational environments.     Analysis of embedded CORBA middleware performance on urban distributed transportation equipments

    The increasing number of ITS (Intelligent Transportation Systems) equipment spread across cities offers tre- mendous possibilities in the development of distributed smart environments. A middleware layer located be- tween the operating system and the fi nal application can be used for the communication among the equipment to spontaneously act and cooperate among themselves. However, this middleware layer has also a computational cost that should be quanti fi ed as it can affect the main application. This paper de fi nes a methodology for such quanti fi cation using as case example a modern ITS equipment related to vehicle tracking using arti fi cial vision.     Distributed urban traffic applications based on CORBA event services

    Intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in urban environments are based today on modern embedded systems with enhanced digital connectivity and higher processing capabilities, supporting distributed applications working in a cooperative manner. This paper provides an overview about modern cooperative ITS equipments and presents a distributed application to be used in an urban data network. As a case example, an application based on an embedded CORBA-compliant middleware layer and several computer vision equipments is presented. Results prove the feasibility of distributed applications for building intelligent urban environments

    Improving the User Experience of the rCUDA Remote GPU Virtualization Framework

    Graphics processing units (GPUs) are being increasingly embraced by the high-performance computing community as an effective way to reduce execution time by accelerating parts of their applications. remote CUDA (rCUDA) was recently introduced as a software solution to address the high acquisition costs and energy consumption of GPUs that constrain further adoption of this technology. Specifically, rCUDA is a middleware that allows a reduced number of GPUs to be transparently shared among the nodes in a cluster. Although the initial prototype versions of rCUDA demonstrated its functionality, they also revealed concerns with respect to usability, performance, and support for new CUDA features. In response, in this paper, we present a new rCUDA version that (1) improves usability by including a new component that allows an automatic transformation of any CUDA source code so that it conforms to the needs of the rCUDA framework, (2) consistently features low overhead when using remote GPUs thanks to an improved new communication architecture, and (3) supports multithreaded applications and CUDA libraries. As a result, for any CUDA-compatible program, rCUDA now allows the use of remote GPUs within a cluster with low overhead, so that a single application running in one node can use all GPUs available across the cluster, thereby extending the single-node capability of CUDA.     A framework to identify primitives that represent usability within Model-Driven Development methods

    Context: Nowadays, there are sound methods and tools which implement the Model-Driven Development approach (MDD) satisfactorily. However, MDD approaches focus on representing and generating code that represents functionality, behaviour and persistence, putting the interaction, and more specifically the usability, in a second place. If we aim to include usability features in a system developed with a MDD tool, we need to extend manually the generated code. Objective: This paper tackles how to include functional usability features (usability recommendations strongly related to system functionality) in MDD through conceptual primitives. Method: The approach consists of studying usability guidelines to identify usability properties that can be represented in a conceptual model. Next, these new primitives are the input for a model compiler that generates the code according to the characteristics expressed in them. An empirical study with 66 subjects was conducted to study the effect of including functional usability features regarding end users' satisfaction and time to complete tasks. Moreover, we have compared the workload of two MDD analysts including usability features by hand in the generated code versus including them through conceptual primitives according to our approach. Results: Results of the empirical study shows that after including usability features, end users' satisfaction improves while spent time does not change significantly. This justifies the use of usability features in the software development process. Results of the comparison show that the workload required to adapt the MDD method to support usability features through conceptual primitives is heavy. However, once MDD supports these features, MDD analysts working with primitives are more efficient than MDD analysts implementing these features manually. Conclusion: This approach brings us a step closer to conceptual models where models represent not only functionality, behaviour or persistence, but also usability features. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V.     Android real-time audio communications over local wireless

    This paper describes an Android mobile application that allows voice communications through short-range wireless networks, mainly Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. The application is able to replicate as close as possible the behavior of a two-way radio device. The application is designed to receive audio streams from multiple devices simultaneously and to send them.
