Paper Session II-A - Columbus Elements Processing Needs At KSC

    Get PDF
The COLUMBUS Attached Laboratory will form an integral part of the Space Station Freedom and the COLUMBUS Free Flying Laboratory will use the Space Station Freedom as a servicing base. The COLUMBUS Attached Laboratory will be launched by NSTS in the late Space Station Freedom assembly period. This laboratory is presently planned to be launched without the complete payload, due to launch mass restrictions, requiring additional outfitting missions utilizing NASA Pressurized Logistics Carriers. The COLUMBUS Free Flyer will be launched by the ARIANE 5 and is configured to sustain nominal mission operations by HERMES visits between servicing events at the Space Station Freedom. For this purpose the NASA infrastructure will also be used for Free Flyer\u27s upload and download processing. This paper concentrates on the ground processing aspects for the initial delivery of the COLUMBUS Attached Laboratory, payload outfitting launches, and the periodic resupply launches for both the Attached Laboratory and the Free Flyer. It describes the acceptance approach of flight hardware at the European facilities and the concepts for shipment to and essential processing at the launch site. Primarily addressed is the intended use of the Space Station Processing Facility for these COLUMBUS needs. A summary is presented in a scenario covering upload and download processing for the COLUMBUS elements at KSC

In observance of the Quincentenary of the Columbus expedition to the New World, Dr. Virginia Puicci, Vice President of Planning and Administration at Governors State led planning and fund raising efforts for the Carillon and an endowment for an annual scholarly symposium. Though fund raising efforts fell short of the goal of an endowment for an annual symposium, The Christopher Columbus Carillon at the Governors State University was dedicated on November 13, 1992 as part of an all-day scholarly conference. The Doctorate of Humane Letters (Honorary Doctorate) degree was conferred upon Alberto Bemporad, who was the commissioner general of the Genoa Exposition in 1992, and Paolo Emilio Taviani, who was named Italian Senator for Life. He has had a distinguished career in both the political world and the academic world. Senator Taviani was a leader in the anti-fascist Partisan movement. In 1947 he was among the founding fathers of the constitution of the new Italian Republic. He subsequently served as Minister of Finance. Minister of Treasury and Minister of Interior. Senator Taviani served as professor of history and economics at the University of Genoa from 1945- 1983. He is the author of a dozen books, including Cristofaro Colombo, la genesi della gran.de Scoperta (1974) and I Viaggi di Colombo (1984) which is published in English as \u27The Voyages of Columbus . The program contains a schedule for the day\u27s events, the Dedication ceremony program, and the following essays: Reflections on 1492 and Christopher Columbus, by Arthur P. Bourgeois, Ph.D., Governors State University The Image of Columbus and the Challenge to History, by Dominic Candeloro, Ph.D. Nursing During the Days of Columbus (1451-1506) by Maria Connolly, DNSc, CCRN The Columbus Legacy by Lowell Culver, Ph.D. Columbus as a Symbol, by Paul Green, Ph.D. On Christopher Columbus and the 500th Anniversary of Encountering the New World, by Edward H. Columbus pressurized module verification

The baseline verification approach of the COLUMBUS Pressurized Module was defined during the A and B1 project phases. Peculiarities of the verification program are the testing requirements derived from the permanent manned presence in space. The model philosophy and the test program have been developed in line with the overall verification concept. Such critical areas as meteoroid protections, heat pipe radiators and module seals are identified and tested. Verification problem areas are identified and recommendations for the next development are proposed

Understanding and Encouraging Student Diversity: Involving the Community

The Committee on Diversity in the Collegeof Educationof ColumbusStateUniversityhas been involved in several programs since 2004 to increase the diversity in the college, both with students and faculty/staff. This has been accomplished by involving the community in and around Columbus, Georgia. This article addresses the committee’s work to adapt several strategies to develop a three-pronged approach: (1) acceptance of diversity within our ranks, (2) partnering with One Columbus, a community organization to promote diversity, racial harmony, and unity in Columbus, and (3) participation with CHISPA, a Hispanic organization intended to recruit and retain Hispanic students at CSU and to build community in the College of Education. Ideas for each of these are shared

Columbus container services ECJ case and its consequences : a lost opportunity to shed light on the scope of the non-discrimination principle

    Get PDF
This article examines the European Court of Justice’s (ECJ’s) judgment in the Columbus Container Services BVBA & Co. v. Finanzamt Bielefeld-Innenstadt (hereinafter ‘Columbus Container Services’) case (C-298/05). After a brief description of the facts and the decision, the authors critically analyze the ruling, in light of potential acceptance of horizontal comparability as opposed to the traditional migrant/non-migrant approach of the ECJ. A study of the ECJ’s case law on horizontal pairs of comparison, together with a possible legal background for this approach (single market principle), allows the authors to conclude that the German rules under scrutiny (switch-over clause in quasi-CFC situations) were in breach of fundamental freedoms. Finally, the authors also consider hypothetical consequences of Columbus Container Services for other problems at stake such as the future of anti-avoidance rules in the European context, rules on classii cation of foreign entities, consolidation regimes that might imply treaty overrides, or the compatibility of the credit method itself with EC law.The research for this article was conducted under project SEJ2006-00159JURI (‘La armonización de la imposición sobre Sociedades’) directed by Prof. J. Zornoza (Carlos III University of Madrid) and financed by the Spanish Ministry of Education and Science.Publicad
