The Application of Canonical Correlation to Two-Dimensional Contingency Tables

    Get PDF
This paper re-introduces and demonstrates the use of Mickeys (1970) canonical correlation method in analyzing large two-dimensional contingency tables. This method of analysis supplements the traditional analysis using the Pearson chi-square. Examples and a MATLAB source listing are provided

A Study of Standard Setting and Productivity Measurements using Learning Curves

Performance standards encompass information characteristics which decay over time. Consequently, it is worthwhile to identify factors affecting information decay. In Chapter I, the objectives of this study were discussed. They are restated: (1) determine if production worker performance has changed over time, (2) provide broad guidelines and recommendations for production type industries concerning performance evaluation of employees during training, (3) find evidence that standards and environmental factors for production workers can be linked and provide information to the firm for budgeting and planning purposes, and (4) provide a basis for further research associated with identifying variables related to improving worker performance

A physical basis for remote rock mapping of igneous rocks using spectral variations in thermal infrared emittance

Results of a theoretical investigation of the relation between spectral features in the 8-12 micrometer region and rock type are presented. Data on compositions of a suite of rocks and measurements of their spectral intensities in 8.2-10.9 and 9.4-12.1 micrometer bands published by Vincent (1973) were subjected to various quantitative procedures. There was no consistent direct relationship between rock group names and the relative spectral intensities. However, there is such a relationship between the Thornton-Tuttle (1960) Differentiation Index and the relative spectral intensities. This relationship is explicable on the basis of the change in average Si-O bond length which is a function of the degree of polymerization of the SiO4 tetrahedra of the silicate minerals in the igneous rocks

Der Einsatz von Statistik-Programmpaketen: Klassifikation und vergleichender Überblick

    Get PDF
(psz)'There is no doubt that computer statistical packages provide scientists with a relatively easy way of dealing with complex data analysis, and that the use of computer-based data analysis has increased dramatically in recent years. Computers play nowadays an essential role in the analysis of data in many disciplines, including Historical Social Research. This text begins with a short history of the development of computer statistical packages. A discussion follows which is devoted to developing an understanding of programmed statistical packages in general. With this background a classification scheme for universal and more specific statistical packages follows in part one. In part two we discuss the advantages and disadvantages of statistical packages. At present many packages are dealing with simple and complex data analyses. The earliest packages were designed to be used with large main-frame computers. Nowadays, however, many of them are available on small machines known as personal computers (PCs). In part three we therefore give an overview of selected packages with a wide range of statistical procedures and graphical tools suitable for PCs. In part four we compare these packages following selected criterias (system characteristics, data management, statistical procedures, graphical tools). The last part deals with problems of artificial intelligence within statistical computing area. We discuss these purposes more profoundly, and give some of the historical backgrounds. Further objectives are to discuss some knowledge based systems and to show there limitations until today.' (author's abstract

Systematic Review of the Texas Pocket Gopher, \u3ci\u3eGeomys personatus\u3c/i\u3e (Mammalia: Rodentia)

The Texas pocket gopher (Geomys personarus), which occupies a range in southern Texas and extreme northeastern Tamaulipas, was examined for morphological variation. Univariate and multivariate analyses were used to determine age, secondary sexual, individual, and geographic variation. Significant differences were found among the three age classes and between the sexes for 12 of 13 cranial measurements. Males displayed higher individual variation than females. Distributions of the six previously recognized subspecies (fallax, fuscus, maritimus, megapotamus, personatus, and streckeri) were examined. An additional subspecies is recognized and described. Of the seven subspecies of G. personatus, fuscus and streckeri form a group distinct from other subspecies
