    Domain analysis within the GenSIF framework

    The GenSIF framework which is targeted towards very large, distributed, and complex software systems recently has been proposed to accomplish a form of systems engineering and systems development in which the issue of systems integration is considered from the beginning on. One of the components of GenSIF is domain analysis. Domain analysis leads to the design of a domain model. The specific needs GenSIF has in that area were investigated with an emphasis on domain modeling. Main points addressed in that investigation were the issue regarding the relevant information for the domain modeling process and the required type of domain model. Based on these results, an approach to domain modeling for GenSIF was developed that provides a specific graphical notation which allows to create a semiformal kind of domain model. A few modeling examples for the application domain university department were designed to evaluate this notation. In addition, the major aspects of the application of a computer based tool with respect to domain analysis as a concept of GenSIF were analysed

    EXPLORING A DOMAIN ONTOLOGY BASED APPROACH TO BUSINESS PROCESS DESIGN

    Business process modeling is a critical area of business application as business processes increase in complexity and become more automated. However, little attention has been paid to the fact that business process modelers often misunderstand domain concepts or relationships due to a lack of precise domain knowledge. This semantic ambiguity problem often affects the efficiency and quality of business process modeling. To address this problem, we propose a domain ontology based approach (DOBA) to supporting business process design by capturing domain semantics with a meta model of process ontologies. DOBA provides a means to capture rich, semantic information on complex business processes, which enables the incorporation of domain specific ontologies to facilitate modeling of business processes. The validity of DOBA is demonstrated via a business case in electronic auctions. The DOBA approach represents a first step towards developing a formal methodology for ontology-based modeling and analysis in business process management

    A Structure of Problem Solving Methods for Real Time Decision Support in Traffic Control

    This article describes a knowledge-based application in the domain of road traffic management that we have developed following a knowledge modeling approach and the notion of problem-solving method. The article presents first a domain-independent model for real-time decision support as a structured collection of problem solving methods. Then, it is described how this general model is used to develop an operational version for the domain of traffic management. For this purpose, a particular knowledge modeling tool, called KSM (Knowledge Structure Manager), was applied. Finally, the article shows an application developed for a traffic network of the city of Madrid and it is compared with a second application developed for a different traffic area of the city of Barcelona

    DoMoRe – A recommender system for domain modeling

    Domain modeling is an important activity in early phases of software projects to achieve a shared understanding of the problem field among project participants. Domain models describe concepts and relations of respective application fields using a modeling language and domain-specific terms. Detailed knowledge of the domain as well as expertise in model-driven development is required for software engineers to create these models. This paper describes DoMoRe, a system for automated modeling recommendations to support the domain modeling process. We describe an approach in which modeling benefits from formalized knowledge sources and information extraction from text. The system incorporates a large network of semantically related terms built from natural language data sets integrated with mediator-based knowledge base querying in a single recommender system to provide context-sensitive suggestions of model elements
