    Digital twin aided vulnerability assessment and risk-based maintenance planning of bridge infrastructures exposed to extreme conditions

    Over the past centuries, millions of bridge infrastructures have been constructed globally. Many of those bridges are ageing and exhibit significant potential risks. Frequent risk-based inspection and maintenance management of highway bridges is particularly essential for public safety. At present, most bridges rely on manual inspection methods for management. The efficiency is extremely low, causing the risk of bridge deterioration and defects to increase day by day, reducing the load-bearing capacity of bridges, and restricting the normal and safe use of them. At present, the applications of digital twins in the construction industry have gained significant momentum and the industry has gradually entered the information age. In order to obtain and share relevant information, engineers and decision makers have adopted digital twins over the entire life cycle of a project, but their applications are still limited to data sharing and visualization. This study has further demonstrated the unprecedented applications of digital twins to sustainability and vulnerability assessments, which can enable the next generation risk-based inspection and maintenance framework. This study adopts the data obtained from a constructor of Zhongcheng Village Bridge in Zhejiang Province, China as a case study. The applications of digital twins to bridge model establishment, information collection and sharing, data processing, inspection and maintenance planning have been highlighted. Then, the integration of “digital twins (or Building Information Modelling, BIM) + bridge risk inspection model” has been established, which will become a more effective information platform for all stakeholders to mitigate risks and uncertainties of exposure to extreme weather conditions over the entire life cycle

    A Web based geospatial application for disaster preparedness in Uganda

    Dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Master of Science in Geospatial Technologies.The power of Geospatial technologies in first world countries is increasingly being harnessed to manage disasters; this is not the same case for Uganda a disaster prone country in East Africa. For regions in the blankets of Mt. Rwenzori in the west and Mt. Elgon in the east, every year brings with it new challenges in the field of disaster management. When disasters happen in Uganda, government agencies and different Humanitarian Organizations run to the aid of the affected, relief is provided and rehabilitation activities carried out, but there remains little usable GI of the affected areas (Farthing & Ware, 2010). If disaster preparedness and management is dependent on accurate analysis and mapping of vulnerability and susceptibility of communities to risk (Office of the Prime Minister, 2010) and there exists data gaps and challenges (NEMA/UBOS, n.d.) in the country, how then can disaster managers carry out vulnerability assessment of communities? This thesis examines the possibility of providing disaster managers the means to assess the vulnerability of communities to risk by suggesting a solution for data acquisition and developing a web application based on interoperable modular components to act as a platform where this analysis can be performed

    Training of Crisis Mappers and Map Production from Multi-sensor Data: Vernazza Case Study (Cinque Terre National Park, Italy)

    This aim of paper is to presents the development of a multidisciplinary project carried out by the cooperation between Politecnico di Torino and ITHACA (Information Technology for Humanitarian Assistance, Cooperation and Action). The goal of the project was the training in geospatial data acquiring and processing for students attending Architecture and Engineering Courses, in order to start up a team of "volunteer mappers". Indeed, the project is aimed to document the environmental and built heritage subject to disaster; the purpose is to improve the capabilities of the actors involved in the activities connected in geospatial data collection, integration and sharing. The proposed area for testing the training activities is the Cinque Terre National Park, registered in the World Heritage List since 1997. The area was affected by flood on the 25th of October 2011. According to other international experiences, the group is expected to be active after emergencies in order to upgrade maps, using data acquired by typical geomatic methods and techniques such as terrestrial and aerial Lidar, close-range and aerial photogrammetry, topographic and GNSS instruments etc.; or by non conventional systems and instruments such us UAV, mobile mapping etc. The ultimate goal is to implement a WebGIS platform to share all the data collected with local authorities and the Civil Protectio

    Digital protection of traditional villages of “Retaining Homesickness”

    With the rapid disappearance of traditional villages, the traditional culture contained in them has been in jeopardy, and digital protection has become the international trend and necessary way to protect traditional culture. Under the new situation, “retaining homesickness” has become a realistic demand at the national level. Homesickness originates from the distance of time and space. The satisfaction of homesickness demands not only the protection of culture, but also higher requirements for digital technology. The main obstacles to the digital protection of traditional villages are the lack of mechanism and top-level design, the fragmentation of departments and disciplines, and the emphasis on “form” over “spirit” in digitalization. The key to solve the problem lies in the top-level design from the aspects of system and standard, choosing digital memory content based on landscape gene theory, and designing virtual tourism products that meet the needs of homesickness by taking virtual tourism as the service form
