Legibility: How Precedents Established in Print Impact On-Screen and Dynamic Typography

    Get PDF
The printed word has been commonplace in society for over 500 years; the written word has been in existence for thousands. The primary intent of the written or printed word has historically been to be read. With that goal, rules and formats have developed over the centuries as aids to legibility. Naturally, these guidelines have been developed for the printed, or static typographic page. As our sophistication with and acceptance of technology grows, however, we increasingly turn to the computer or television screen for written information. Additionally, graphic designers and artists are questioning the role of the printed word as they explore the many technological advances that have moved type from the page to the screen. Formulas and guidelines that served the printed page may no longer be relevant. New typographic approaches are necessary to successfully integrate the visual word with new technologies

Visual poetry in Galicia had a plural and discontinuous existence in the twentieth century'! Its development in Galicia follows national (Spanish) and international artistic practices, while also engaging in the configuration of a local, national, and transnational Galician identity. The practice of different styles of visual poetry shows a rich line of creativity, especially in the last four decades. Their approaches coincide with sociocultural and economic changes in Spain, such as the end of the dictatorship in 1975, the consequent normalization of the Galician language, and more recently the progressive influence of globalization. This essay considers how current Galician visual poets reconceptualize these issues in the context of an international cultural and visual aesthetics

A tale in motion; ascended learning

The education of children in their early development is an essential time for them to develop their minds both cognitively and creatively. Reading, in particular, is one of the most important factors within this developmental stage, and thus needs to be fully grasped by children. A widening gap of illiteracy in America may be lessened by a more interactive and creative approach to learning. With the advent of the computer and motion graphics software, this thesis proves that there is now a more engaging way of educating our youth. Using the characters within the words to create imagery, rather than a series of lines, this thesis adapts the story of the popular children\u27s storybook I Love the Rain by Margaret Park Bridges. It attempts to make a visual link between elements of the story and the typographical contents within. An example of this is a portion of the story that likens the raindrops to race cars zooming down the school bus window. Unlike traditional print media, the format of this book, which this thesis proposes, allows for children as users to interact with the story itself. Once a child between the ages of four and ten reads a section of the book, they are rewarded with an animation. That is to say, this thesis aims to show children that reading can be a rewarding and enjoyable learning experience. Please visit this thesis\u27 web site at www.taleinmotion.co

Create your own car: a motion graphic demo of a new game

The project Create Your Own Car explores a realistic style of motion graphics through the car- assembling process using both 2D and 3D visual effects to popularize a new racing game to attract more people. The motion graphics illustrate the game features in an interactive game with personalized cars. This project includes two parts: one is the design of personalized vehicles, and the other is the animation stage, which presents the final motion graphics piece. The first stage explores two classic types of vehicles: the muscle car and the sports car. The main focus is on both the different interior constructions and the exterior shape designs. Therefore, this project includes the program Maya for modeling, rendering and animation. The second stage explores an animation which is based on an executable car-assembling motion. The final presentation is a short motion graphic in a realistic style for a racing game teaser trailer
