When longtime Gardner-Webb professor and administrator Dr. Darlene Gravett retired in June 2007, she did not imagine returning to work, let alone under such difficult circumstances. Yet, as the University mourns the sudden and unexpected loss of Dr. Gayle Price, Gravett now finds herself working to fill the place and honor the memory of her dear friend. “Gayle and I were friends and colleagues at another college before coming to Gardner-Webb, and then we enjoyed our time together here for all those years,” Gravett said.https://digitalcommons.gardner-webb.edu/gardner-webb-newscenter-archive/2880/thumbnail.jp

Voting is now a critical event in the state. So that it is necessary to give a proper system to the government. Now a days, for voting people are going out to the election center & standing in a line, here we will be able to vote through our cell phone or landline . In this project a phone connected to the voting system, will decode the DTMF pulses sent by another phone belonging to the voter. A database will keep a record of the voter’s information & a 2nd database will have information about the election parties. The voter will call the toll free number assigned to the IVRS voting system. Then the voter will enter his voting number & his password. If he/she is authenticated then he/she will be allowed to vote. If the person has already voted then his record will be updated as “voted” in the database. Thus in this way voting can be done from anywhere, anytime. Using the voting card number we can find out the information of the voter ie (name, city, state etc.). And finally an administrator who has the authorization to access the database (voting system), will be able to see the report of the number of votes per party. DOI: 10.17762/ijritcc2321-8169.15033

An Illustrative Legacy: Art Education and Zulu ‘Crafts’

This article addresses the stylistic selection and the reproduction of art illustrations in the publications of John W. Grossert, and situates his work in the history of South African art education. Utilizing Grossert's treatment of the ceramic beer pot, or ukhamba, the author demonstrates the manner in which apartheid era art education policies and pedagogical publications shaped by figures such as Grossert constricted artistic diversity and molded what were then referred to as “tribal” identities. The author asserts that the consistent distillation of artistic diversity in the publications of this foundational arts administrator canonized art forms now recognized as Zulu. After fueling apartheid era “tribal” politics, these iconic vessels were later associated with Zulu nationalism. The article concludes with descriptions of contemporary ceramic production and the continued preference for the raised bump motif, or amasumpa, that has now come to symbolize not only Zulu identity, but to connote South African rural associations in general. Thus, the article traces the continued impact of apartheid era pedagogy on contemporary art production

In the session “Start Meeting to Stop Violence”, the educator will be an active participant in understanding the importance classroom meetings. These meetings such as Morning Meeting from The Responsive Classroom have proven to decrease various forms of aggressive, violent, and unmotivated behavior. During the workshop the learner will observe a classroom meeting and then discuss their findings. The educator will paricipate in a simulated morning meeting with a facilitator and then debrief their experience. In this session they will hear from a former kindergarten teacher who is now an administrator on how these meetings transformed his classroom as well as his title I school from a place of bullying into a place of compassion and empathy. We will compare the Morning Meeting with the general classroom meeting and see how each can fit into the day and oppose to take away from instructional time, will actually give the teacher more time on task. This session is geared for all educators K- 12 who are looking for that “Silver Bullet to curb challenging behavior

FRAUDULENT CONVEYANCES - CHANGE OF BENEFICIARY OF LIFE INSURANCE POLICY FORMERLY PAYABLE TO INSURED\u27S ESTATE

An insurance company filed a bill of interpleader to determine disposition of the proceeds of a term policy on the life of one Fitzpatrick, now deceased. Claimants are the administrator, representing creditors, and the deceased\u27s two sons. The policy had been issued payable to insured\u27s estate, but reserved the right to change the beneficiary. A few days before his death (by suicide) deceased sent the company an application for change of beneficiary to his two minor sons. He was then hopelessly insolvent, and the administrator claims that the change of beneficiary was a fraudulent conveyance within the terms of the Uniform Fraudulent Conveyance Act. Held, that under the authority of Ionia County Savings Bank v. McLean a change of beneficiary in an insurance policy may be a conveyance within the fraudulent conveyance statute. However, the general policy of this state is to protect from claims of insured\u27s creditors insurance for the benefit of his wife and children. This can be done by limiting the rights of creditors to the cash surrender value at the time of the transfer, as beyond that an insurance policy represents a mere expectancy. Since the policy involved in the present case had no cash surrender value, there was no conveyance of property in fraud of creditors. Equitable Life Assurance Society v. Jack F. Dexter, Jr. was born July 21, 1943 in Hartford, Connecticut. He moved to Maine when he was eleven years old and lived in Portland, Saco, Cape Elizabeth, and then at the time of this interview, Edgecomb. He went to college at Westland in Connecticut and then to Wharton at the University of Pennsylvania for his graduate degree in city government. He got a grant between his sophomore and junior years of college that allowed him to study government in Portland, Maine and this introduced him to John Menario and his future employment with the city of Portland. He started as assistant city manager to Menario and moved on to run the Model Cities program, which he did for 18 months. From there, he went to work for the Portland Housing Authority for two and a half years. He then was hired to be the city administrator of Saco, Maine and he stayed there for four and a half years, before leaving city government. After working briefly as the president of the Maine Chamber of Commerce and Industry, he went to work for the cable company Time (now Time-Warner-AOL). He later worked for A. G. Edwards, where he was employed at the time of this interview

An Exploratory Model of the Antecedent Factors Contributing to Fan Support/Attendance at HBCU Basketball Games

The factors that impact attendance at sporting events in general and at small college sporting events in particular have been widely examined by sports marketing academicians. Among the various factors emerging over two decades has been attendance based on identity with individual teams and players, to idiosyncratic factors such as the environment and the entertainment value of the sporting event itself. Less is known, however, about what creates and promotes the desire to attend sporting events associated with historically black colleges and universities (HBCU’s). HBCU’s, like their other small college athletic departments, are now facing financial difficulties because of dwindling administrator support ensuing from declining state budgets, forcing the athletic directors of these schools to come up with innovative methods to bolster attendance---the primary source of revenue at small colleges. The authors develop and then test a 33 item scale that includes 11 potential factors explaining attendance at HBCU sporting events. Results and conclusions are then reported. As the authors note, the unique role sports plays in the life of the HBCU fan is ripe for further investigation, and practically speaking, is a valuable area of research for those interested in helping preserve the rich heritage of these programs

    Fay Lawson Oral History

    Get PDF
Fay Lawson has seen the Lab from several perspectives: as a research assistant to Tibby Russell, a graduate student and later college professor viewing Jax from the outside, and now, as a part-time Lab administrator. This interview, in its two quite different halves, reflects these different phases in Lawson\u27s interaction with the Lab. When she is drawing on her early years of working at the Lab in the mid-50\u27s, Lawson provides some of the most vivid and funny anecdotes in this collection, especially vignettes of Tibby Russell (e.g. Tibby having fallen in the snow with mice allover her, wearing her tattered lab coat, looking like a cleaning lady) and recollections of Lab social events (e.g. mouse races and the Lab Lovelies softball team). Lawson clearly here has an eye for the vivid scene that recaptures the essence of Lab esprit. After Lawson left Jax to go on to graduate school, and then to a twenty-year career in college teaching and administration, the anecdotes are fewer. We are provided with memorable material on Barbara Sanford\u27s entry into science, as Lawson\u27s classmate at Brown under Herman Chase. When I began to ask some of the more penetrating questions about Jackson Lab\u27s identity, mission etc., Lawson switched over to her Lab administrator mode, and produced a PR piece. The last c. 30 minutes of this tape would bear out David Harrison\u27s observation that the Lab mentality does not handle intellectual aggression very comfortably. Value this tape for its wonderful anecdotes, which go far toward providing a sense of the Lab\u27s earlier years, but do not look here for much objective analysis
