Augmented reality usage for prototyping speed up
The first part of the article describes our approach for solution of this
problem by means of Augmented Reality. The merging of the real world model and
digital objects allows streamline the work with the model and speed up the
whole production phase significantly. The main advantage of augmented reality
is the possibility of direct manipulation with the scene using a portable
digital camera. Also adding digital objects into the scene could be done using
identification markers placed on the surface of the model. Therefore it is not
necessary to work with special input devices and lose the contact with the real
world model. Adjustments are done directly on the model. The key problem of
outlined solution is the ability of identification of an object within the
camera picture and its replacement with the digital object. The second part of
the article is focused especially on the identification of exact position and
orientation of the marker within the picture. The identification marker is
generalized into the triple of points which represents a general plane in
space. There is discussed the space identification of these points and the
description of representation of their position and orientation be means of
transformation matrix. This matrix is used for rendering of the graphical

Using Augmented Reality as a Medium to Assist Teaching in Higher Education
In this paper we describe the use of a high-level augmented reality
(AR) interface for the construction of collaborative educational applications
that can be used in practice to enhance current teaching
methods. A combination of multimedia information including spatial
three-dimensional models, images, textual information, video,
animations and sound, can be superimposed in a student-friendly
manner into the learning environment. In several case studies different
learning scenarios have been carefully designed based on
human-computer interaction principles so that meaningful virtual
information is presented in an interactive and compelling way. Collaboration
between the participants is achieved through use of a
tangible AR interface that uses marker cards as well as an immersive
AR environment which is based on software user interfaces
(UIs) and hardware devices. The interactive AR interface has been
piloted in the classroom at two UK universities in departments of

Smartphone Augmented Reality Applications for Tourism
Invisible, attentive and adaptive technologies that provide tourists with relevant services and information anytime and anywhere may no longer be a vision from the future. The new display paradigm, stemming from the synergy of new mobile devices, context-awareness and AR, has the potential to enhance tourists’ experiences and make them exceptional. However, effective and usable design is still in its infancy. In this publication we present an overview of current smartphone AR applications outlining tourism-related domain-specific design challenges. This study is part of an ongoing research project aiming at developing a better understanding of the design space for smartphone context-aware AR applications for tourists

Design, characterization, and fabrication of solar-retroreflective cool-wall materials
Raising urban albedo increases the fraction of incident sunlight returned to outer space, cooling cities and their buildings. We evaluated the angular distribution of solar radiation incident on exterior walls in 17 U S. climates to develop performance parameters for solar-retroreflective walls, then applied first-principle physics and ray-tracing simulations to explore designs. Our analysis indicates that retroreflective walls must function at large incidence angles to reflect a substantial portion of summer sunlight, and that this will be difficult to attain with materials that rely on total internal reflection. Gonio-spectrophotometer measurements of the solar spectral bi-directional reflectivity of a bicycle reflector showed little to no retroreflection at large incidence angles. Visual comparisons of retroreflection to specular first-surface reflection for four different retroreflective safety films using violet and green lasers suggest their retroreflection to be no greater than 0.09 at incidence angles up to 45°, and no greater than 0.30 at incidence angles of up to 70°. Attempts to produce a two-surface retroreflector with orthogonal mirror grooves by cutting and polishing an aluminum block indicate that residual surface roughness impedes retroreflection. Ongoing efforts focus on forming orthogonal surfaces with aluminized Mylar film, a material with very high specular reflectance across the solar spectrum. We investigated (1) folding or stamping a free film; (2) adhering the film to a pre-shaped substrate; or (3) attaching the film to a flat ductile substrate, then shaping.
