Chemical Characteristics of Continental Outflow from Asia to the Troposphere over the Western Pacific Ocean during September - October 1991: Results from PEM-West A

    Get PDF
An important objective of the Pacific Exploratory Mission-West A (PEM-West A) was the chemical characterization of the outflow of tropospheric trace gases and aerosol particles from the Asian continent over the western Pacific Ocean. This paper summarizes the chemistry of this outflow during the period September - October 1991. The vertical distributions of CO, C2H6, and NO(x), showed regions of outflow at altitudes below 2 km and from 8 to 12 km. Mixing ratios of CO were approx. equals 130 parts per billion by volume (ppbv), approx. equals 1OOO parts per trillion by volume (pptv) for C2H6, and approx. equals 100 pptv for NO(x) in both of these regions. Direct outflow of Asian industrial materials was clearly evident at altitudes below 2 km, where halocarbon tracer compounds such as CH3CCl3 and C2Cl4 were enhanced about threefold compared to aged Pacific air. The source attribution of species outflowing from Asia to the Pacific at 8-12 km altitude was not straightforward. Above 10 km altitude there were substantial enhancements of NO(y), O3, CO, CH4, SO2, C2H6, C3H8, C2H2, and aerosol Pb-210 but not halocarbon industrial tracers. These air masses were rich in nitrogen relative to sulfur and contained ratios of C2H2/CO and C3H8/C2H6 (approx. equals l.5 and 0.1 respectively) indicative of several- day-old combustion emissions. It is unclear if these emissions were of Asian origin, or if they were rapidly transported to this region from Europe by the high wind speeds in this tropospheric region (60 - 70 m/s). The significant cyclonic activity over Asia at this time could have transported to the upper troposphere emissions from biomass burning in Southeast Asia or emissions from the extensive use of various biomass materials for cooking and space heating. Apparently, the emissions in the upper troposphere were brought there by wet convective systems since water-soluble gases and aerosols were depleted in these air masses. Near 9 km altitude there was a distinct regional outflow that appeared to be heavily influenced by biogenic processes on the Asian continent, especially from the southeastern area. These air masses contained CH4 in excess of 1800 ppbv, while CO2 and OCS were significantly depleted (349 - 352 ppmv and 450 - 500 pptv, respectively). This signature seemingly reflected CH4 emissions from wetlands and rice paddies with coincident biospheric uptake of tropospheric CO2 and OCS

Holography, tomography and 3D microscopy as linear filtering operations

In this paper we characterise 3D optical imaging techniques as 3D linear shift invariant filtering operations. From the Helmholtz equation that is the basis of scalar diffraction theory we show that the scattered field, or indeed a holographic reconstruction of this field, can be considered to be the result of a linear filtering operation applied to a source distribution. We note that if the scattering is weak, the source distribution is independent of the scattered field and a holographic reconstruction (or in fact any far-field optical imaging system) behaves as a 3D linear shift invariant filter applied to the refractive index contrast (which effectively defines the object). We go on to consider tomographic techniques that synthesise images from recordings of the scattered field using different illumination conditions. In our analysis we compare the 3D response of monochromatic optical tomography with the 3D imagery offered by confocal microscopy and scanning white light interferometry (using with quassi-monochromatic illumination) and explain the circumstances in which these approaches are equivalent. Finally, we consider the 3D response of polychromatic optical tomography and in particular the response of spectral optical coherence tomography and scanning white light interferometry

The relationship between narcissism and some aspects of using Instagram

    Get PDF
Narcissists show up daily on a television, in magazines, on internet sites. It seems that narcissism is on the rise, especially among adolescents and young adults. Research have shown that the current generation of adolescents and young adults are more narcissistic than the previous generations. Not only that adolescents are more narcissistic, they are also the main consumers of social network sites, which raises the question of whether there is a connection between narcissism and social network sites usage. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine the relationship between narcissism and some aspects of using the most popular social network among adolescents - Instagram. We also wanted to examine whether there are gender differences in self-presentation and time spent on Instagram. The survey was conducted on 225 students of the Commerce School in Čakovec, who completed the Narcissistic personality questionnaire (NPI), the Scale of the dark triad, the Intensity of Instagram usage, and the Instagram conduct questionnaire adapted for the purpose of this research. The results of the study found a positive correlation between narcissism and emotional attachment, time spent on Instagram, self-presentation and social contact, while between narcissism and the number of followers and the number of people that are followed, on Instagram there was no correlation. Those respondents who achieved higher scores on the narcissism scales were more emotionally connected with Instagram, spent more time on Instagram, and participated in multiple self-promotional behaviors and more behaviors that served to maintain social contacts. When it comes to gender differences in the use of Instagram, it was found that young women and young men differ in self-presentation and the time they spend on Instagram; a larger number of young women spend more hours on Instagram, while the opposite effect is noticed for young men. Also, young women are more likely to engage in self-promotional behavior on Instagram when compared to young men
