Background suppressing Gabor energy filtering
In the field of facial emotion recognition, early research advanced with the use of Gabor filters. However, these filters lack generalization and result in undesirably large feature vector size. In recent work, more attention has been given to other local appearance features. Two desired characteristics in a facial appearance feature are generalization capability, and the compactness of representation. In this paper, we propose a novel texture feature inspired by Gabor energy filters, called background suppressing Gabor energy filtering. The feature has a generalization component that removes background texture. It has a reduced feature vector size due to maximal representation and soft orientation histograms, and it is awhite box representation. We demonstrate improved performance on the non-trivial Audio/Visual Emotion Challenge 2012 grand-challenge dataset by a factor of 7.17 over the Gabor filter on the development set. We also demonstrate applicability of our approach beyond facial emotion recognition which yields improved classification rate over the Gabor filter for four bioimaging datasets by an average of 8.22%
Perceptual-based textures for scene labeling: a bottom-up and a top-down approach
Due to the semantic gap, the automatic interpretation of digital images is a very challenging task. Both the segmentation and classification are intricate because of the high variation of the data. Therefore, the application of appropriate features is of utter importance. This paper presents biologically inspired texture features for material classification and interpreting outdoor scenery images. Experiments show that the presented texture features obtain the best classification results for material recognition compared to other well-known texture features, with an average classification rate of 93.0%. For scene analysis, both a bottom-up and top-down strategy are employed to bridge the semantic gap. At first, images are segmented into regions based on the perceptual texture and next, a semantic label is calculated for these regions. Since this emerging interpretation is still error prone, domain knowledge is ingested to achieve a more accurate description of the depicted scene. By applying both strategies, 91.9% of the pixels from outdoor scenery images obtained a correct label
Unsupervised Texture Segmentation using Active Contours and Local Distributions of Gaussian Markov Random Field Parameters
In this paper, local distributions of low order Gaussian Markov Random Field (GMRF) model parameters are proposed as texture features for unsupervised texture segmentation.Instead of using model parameters as texture features, we exploit the variations in parameter estimates found by model fitting in local region around the given pixel. Thespatially localized estimation process is carried out by maximum likelihood method employing a moderately small estimation window which leads to modeling of partial texturecharacteristics belonging to the local region. Hence significant fluctuations occur in the estimates which can be related to texture pattern complexity. The variations occurred in estimates are quantified by normalized local histograms. Selection of an accurate window size for histogram calculation is crucial and is achieved by a technique based on the entropy of textures. These texture features expand the possibility of using relativelylow order GMRF model parameters for segmenting fine to very large texture patterns and offer lower computational cost. Small estimation windows result in better boundarylocalization. Unsupervised segmentation is performed by integrated active contours, combining the region and boundary information. Experimental results on statistical and structural component textures show improved discriminative ability of the features compared to some recent algorithms in the literature
